THEIR PUBLIC SPAT
TOP TWEETS
amajwadi Party
president Akhilesh
Yadav has reached
out to his estranged
uncle Shivpal Yadav
before the UP elections, a move
that will only improve his
chances against the BJP which
is riding high on Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s blitz. The SP
and Shivpal’s Pragatisheel Sa-
majwadi Party (Lohia) have
agreed to ally for the 2022 elec-
tions. How much of the bitter-
ness still lingers between the
nephew and his uncle after the
public spat they had five years
ago is hard to guess but at this
juncture the two have put that
behind them for their political
survival. Shivpal is said to have
influence on at least 20 assembly
seats in Etawah and Mainpuri.
The split between the two came
after Akhilesh divested Shivpal
of all ministerial positions. The
gulf gradually widened and led
to Yadav votes moving away
from them in 2017.
By allying with smaller par-
ties like the RLD, SBSP and PSP,
Akhilesh Yadav is geared up for
an interesting poll battle.
S
ongress MLA KR
Ramesh Kumar’s
disgusting re-
mark that “when
rape is inevitable,
enjoy it” in the Karnataka
Assembly is highly con-
demnable. So is the laughter
by BJP MLAs, including the
Speaker, that followed the
remark which is an insult to
thousands of rape victims.
Surprisingly, no member of
the House condemned the
remark that made light of
the trauma which a rape vic-
tim undergoes. The remark
and the accompanying
laughter in the House show
utter lack of gender sensitiv-
ity in politicians across par-
ty lines. Kumar later issued
a half-hearted apology, say-
ing that he will do so only
because of the outrage his
remark had caused.
Kumar has given the BJP a
stick to beat his party with.
The sexist remark flies in the
face of Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra’s assurance to women
on their safety and 40 per
cent reservation for them in
politics. It also puts the party
on the back foot in poll-bound
Uttar Pradesh. Ideally the
MLA should resign if he
wants to save Priyanka the
blushes and also avoid weak-
ening the party’s position
against Ajay Mishra, the
MoS for Home Affairs.
A politician making mi-
sogynist remarks is not new.
Former Karnataka Pradesh
Congress Committee presi-
dent Mullapally Ramachan-
dran once came up with an
even more shocking remark
in which he reportedly said
that if a woman is “sexually
assaulted she must die as her
honour lies in her vagina”.
Ranjeet Shrivastava, BJP
MLA from Barabanki, said
in 2020 that “if no one sees
you being raped, it means
you had an affair with the
rapist”.

THE VALUE OF
PURPOSEFUL
SOLITUDE
ave you ever examined a tiny
flower and marvelled at its
symmetry and beauty, or
looked up at the stars and felt
awe at their magnificence?
These thoughts enhance
our appreciation for the sim-
pler things in life. We can en-
rich our mind with such
wholesome thoughts when
opportunity presents itself. It
can be calming and relaxing.
Who of us does not need to
relax? Most people sitting in
a doctor’s waiting room are
sick simply because they
have difficulties in coping
with life’s pressures.
Meditation basically
means to think or consider
quietly, soberly and deeply.
Meditating on universal prin-
ciples can help us to avoid,
reduce and deal with anxiety
.
It enables us to clear our
mind, organize our thoughts
and evaluate priorities.
Today, life is overwhelm-
ing and crowded. It moves
fast, and we need time to
evaluate the events that flash
by
. Being alone for a time, al-
lows us moments for neces-
sary reflection, a sheer pleas-
ure in itself.
Meditation is not lazy day-
dreaming or mind rambling
with helter-skelter thoughts,
but it is guided, purposeful
thinking in order to arrive at
some definite conclusion. It
improves our mind and in-
volves asking the following
questions in any situation,
“how does this affect my life?
Does it require I make adjust-
ments in my attitude and ac-
tions? Can I make a logical
prediction as to how a person
might react under such cir-
cumstances?”
Such wholesome thinking
gives us inner depth, quiet re-
serve and strength – all of
which add insight and under-
standing to our speech and be-
haviour. It also improves com-
prehension and memory
. Just
asadesignerturnsrawmateri-
als into an attractive design,
meditationenablestoassemble
facts into a coherent pattern.
The rush of events some-
times sweeps us along like a
chipof woodontheriver,with
no chance to guide or control
our course unless we put up a
struggle against the current
and work our way to a calm
pool for pause and reflection.
Byshuttingoutsoundsthat
assault the ear and blind our-
selves to sights that distract
the eye, the mind is free to
think of other things. It opens
the avenues of the mind to
new ideas, resulting in explo-
rations and creativity
.
What if our thoughts be-
come stagnant and stale? If a
room is full, more persons
cannot enter. Similarly, when
mind is occupied, new
thoughts cannot come. Feed-
ing upon information, expe-
rience and training and giv-
ing time for it to filter in,
through meditation – revives,
renews and replenishes us.
Keeping our mind on the
surface does not allow us to
see the deep thoughts. Time
and solitude are the “pick
and showel” for mining them
through contemplation.
Some feel alone when tem-
porarily, they are away from
others. Their first inclina-
tion may be to turn on the
music or television. But a
certain amount of solitude is
our basic need. It is restora-
tive and healthy
.
Forthosewhoareusuallyin
the company of others, isola-
tion can be a change and can
provide fine opportunity for
thinking.
It can help to better under-
stand our views, tendencies,
attitude, feelings, ambitions,
longings and the like. Creating
time for oneself and enjoying
one’sowncompanytoareason-
able degree promotes personal
self sufficiency
.
Proper meditation deters a
person from giving unbal-
anced or thoughtless replies.
One will avoid speaking rash-
ly
. Before talking to others, it
is best to talk to ourselves, to
soliloquize.
Such self preparation
guides our speech to refresh
and enliven others thus build-
ing warm relationships.
Reading is thinking. It in-
volves weighing and compar-
ing the ideas extracted from
the printed page. For most
people, reading is nothing but
a method of not thinking.
They immerse themselves in
popular novels and magazine
stories deriving emotional
thrills. Reading, without fo-
cus, is wasteful. The objective
is lost without proper reflec-
tion and understanding.
Persons facing difficult
situations treasure moments
to be alone in quiet, private
surroundings. It helps to re-
main calm and balanced
while facing the everyday
wear and tear of life. Think-
ing on facts, before taking a
tough decision, requires
time. Snap decisions are of-
ten regretted later.
Placing too much empha-
sis on privacy can create im-
balances that can seriously
jeopardize our wellbeing.
Solitude should be pursued
in moderation. It is a reward-
ing place to visit but a dan-
gerous place in which to re-
main. To isolate oneself too
much, runs contrary to our
basic need to associate and
communicate.
Clearly, we have many rea-
sons to engage in deep, con-
centrated thinking about im-
portant matters. It is vital to
reflect on our past experi-
ences, ponder over current
matters and thoughtfully
contemplate our future.

New Delhi: Stating

Prime Minister Naren-

Addressing the All

“We should believe in

not need revolution to-
day. We don’t need to
demolish our heritage
buildings rather we
need to rejuvenate them
and move towards tech-

I want all the Mayors to

The PM further sug-

.
“Can we start a ward
beautification competi-

will promote a feeling

New Delhi: Mamata
Banerjee’s election
strategist Prashant
Kishor said in an inter-
view recently that the
Congress does not have
monopoly on being the
leader of the Opposi-
tion. In the same inter-
view, he said that other
Opposition parties
should also project
their leader. This had
the desired effect and
soon, NCP declared
Sharad Pawar as the
leader. However, Pawar
has been declared a
leader for decades and
has been called some-
times as Prime Minis-
ter in waiting. Recently,
he turned 81 and the
party organised a pro-
gram on this occasion,
in which Chhagan Bhu-
jbal praised him and
termed Pawar as a can-
didate for the post of
Prime Minister.
Bhujbal referred to
the formation of Maha
Vikas Aghadi Govern-
ment in Maharashtra
and termed it as a mira-
cle and said that such
miracles can be done at
the national level as
well. NCP leaders be-
lieve that if Sharad Pa-
war is given the task of
uniting the Opposition
across the country, he
will be successful. On
the other hand, Trina-
mool Congress and
Prashant Kishor want
Mamata Banerjee to
unite the opposition
across the country and
come out as the undis-
puted leader of a united
Opposition.
Although Pawar’s age
and health are not with
him, however he is not
one of those who give
up. If Nitish Kumar also
jumps into this politics
in some way in the com-
ing days, then the com-
petition will become in-
teresting. Arvind Kejri-
wal is already engaged
in getting himself rec-
ognised as the leader of
Opposition.

ference AGM of FIC-

fects of the Covid-19

policy decisions of
Prime Minister Nar-

Suggesting that In-
stitutions like FICCI

capital investment as

the Home Minister
stressed on the need
for the development
of the poor as an es-
sential move for the
improvement of the
economy
.
“Investment in

adding “PM Modi
gave a humane face

Shah later said
that the policy deci-
sions taken by PM
Modi will “make In-
dia number one in

dependence”.
Noting many diffi-
culties, Shah said the
roots of democracy

UP CM Yogi says that people in state wants BJP’s Ram Rajya
for them and not SP’s perverted socialism and communism
First India Bureau
Lucknow: With Uttar
Pradesh fast heading
toward bipolar contest
in 2022, the UP CM Yogi
Adityanath, targeting
main rival Samajwadi
Party, said the country
needed “Ram Rajya”
and not Samajwad (so-
cialism) or Samyawad
(communism).
In view of the BJP ag-
gressively pursuing
hard “Hindutav” agen-
da in the run up to the
crucial assembly elec-
tion the UP CM has
been carrying out exer-
cise to sharpen attack
on SP’s socialism by in-
voking “Ram Rajya”.
Even though “social-
ism” finds mention in
the country’s Constitu-
tionandtheprogramme
and policies of the NDA
govt also reflected it,
the CM, while speaking
in the state assembly
after announcing some
populist schemes, said
“the country neither
needs socialism nor
communism, this coun-
try wants Ram Rajya,
which means the one
which is everlasting,
universal and eternal
and not affected by cir-
cumstances.”
“We are making UP
free from poverty, cor-
ruption, communalism,
and casteism. UP is on
its way to becoming
Ram Rajya,” he said.
Yogi also used the occa-
sion to attack SP chief
Akhilesh Yadav, though
without naming him,
for his Jinnah remark.
The CM said SP’s social-
ism represented “pari-
varvad” (dynastic so-
cialism), Mafiavadi
(Mafia socialism), Ara-
jaktavadi (anarchist so-
cialism) Dangawadi
(riot socialism) and
atankwadi samajwad
(terrorist socialism).
Recalling the Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi’s “Red Cap” com-
ment, Yogi said “people
take Samajwad as red
alert now”. Interest-
ingly while running
down SP’s Samajwad,
Yogi eulogised Dr Ram
Manohar Lohia- a hard-
core socialist and an
icon of the SP. Yogi said
PM Narendra Modi had
realised dream of so-
cialist leader Lohia.
Yogi said “Lohia had
said that true socialist
would stay away from
property and progeny”.
KASHI IS NEW MODEL OF URBAN GROWTH, SAYS
YOGI AS PM MODI HAILS CITY’S DEVELOPMENT
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Yogi Adi-
tyanath said on Friday
that Kashi is an ideal ex-
ample of amalgamation
of India’s rich tradition
and a modernity, which
every city of the country
should aspire for, thanks
to PM Narendra Modi’s
vision and efforts. Yogi
said this as PM Modi on
Friday urged mayors to
work towards cleanli-
ness and beautifica-
tion of the towns and
cities they represented
while promoting local
products and preserv-
ing its heritage. The PM
was addressing mayors
virtually at the All India
Mayors’ Conference
held in Kashi. Speaking
on this occasion Yogi
said: “Seven years ago,
Kashi was much differ-
ent from what it appears
now. The lanes seven
years ago were narrow
and dirty while live elec-
tric wires hanging lose
from the poles, posed
risk to the people’s lives
in almost every locality.
It’s a transformed city
because of honourable
PM’s efforts.” He further
added that Kashi has
set new standards of de-
velopment. He also em-
phasised the importance
of having an Integrated
Command Centre for
Traffic Management in
the city.
“UP is on
its way to
becoming
Ram Rajya by get-
ting free from pov-
erty, corruption
and casteism. SP’s
socialism repre-
sented “parivar-
vad” , Mafiavadi ,

ife changes every
decade though we
hardly perceive the
changes when they
are happening be-
cause we have devel-
oped a habit of living
either in past or imagining a
future. Living in present is
being considered somewhat
sacrilegious to the so-called
religio-historical revival plan
of many powerful people.
People are getting involved in
acrimonious debates over the
lives of long dead people and
their deeds forgetting that
they themselves are wasting
their own times this way,
thereby, missing and messing
opportunities to contribute
something positive to society
and country at this very criti-
cal juncture. As far as remote
past and unknown future is
concerned, most of the as-
sumptions of common people
border to plain naivety or
even stupidity and is not good
for mental and emotional
health. War, pandemic, fam-
ine, floods and technology
significantly change human
lifestyle by impacting the
ways we work for our liveli-
hood and rise in living stand-
ards.
Recent Covid19 pandemic
along with skyrocketing of-
fice space expenses are push-
ing corporates to move their
employees towards work
from home ( WFH) model and
small office home office (
SOHO) idea has become a re-
ality for many people. SOHO
has its advantages and disad-
vantages. A person now re-
mains in close contact with
family but misses the social
interaction and learning po-
tential of office environment,
WFH is leading to monotony,
lethargy and boredom though
improving financial health a
bit by saving on fuel and oth-
er expenses related to com-
muting which, though, ap-
pears to be a temporary phe-
nomenon as the rising elec-
tric bill may square it off
when using air conditioning
at home. So, the overall gain
to an employee working from
home is not very significant.
If we leave aside all these
points, it has become a matter
of importance that a large
number of people are either
working at office or at home
and are sitting on a chair for
a long period of time, so much
so that at an average you
spend about 2000 hours annu-
ally on a chair if you work for
five days a week but it has
been seen that employers
have become greedy to the ex-
tent of becoming exploitative
because they are sending
mails and messages even af-
ter normal office hours and
forcing the employees to re-
spond immediately. It is be-
cause of these circumstances
that you need a real good
chair to save your future pos-
ture and health. A good ergo-
nomic chair is very comfort-
able and improves your pro-
ductivity. It is but an expen-
sive chair with price ranging
from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1,60,000!
Work from home is quite
monotonous which makes
you languish. A cup of well
made coffee can lift your spir-
it and improve your concen-
tration, mood, memory and
reaction time. Go for an arti-
sanal coffee brand. Your
SOHO should also have some
office plants like English Ivy,
snake plants, spider plants
and aloe vera. Love them,
watch them, and in no time
you should feel the difference
as the habit grows within
you. Also buy a large beauti-
ful painting and study it
whenever you are a bit at lei-
sure and see the colours com-
ing alive. Lighting at the work
place is very important, it
should not be too bright or too
dim. A desk lamp with USB
connection can be comforta-
ble and easily adjustable and
should be supplemented with
an overhead light source for
general illumination of the
room. Florescent lights are a
big no for offices.
And finally, young genera-
tion is getting a fat salary
cheque but the working
hours are unpredictable and
unscientific. This lifestyle
keeps a person alive but takes
away many beautiful things
of life out of human experi-
ence because of this continu-
ous involvement in office
work. The society as a whole
had to awaken one day to ask
for rationalization of work-
ing hours. We should take
note of what somebody has
rightly said “ work alone is
not life, it is only a slice not
the whole pizza”.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S
MACBETH
Well, do we have to introduce Shake-
spearean tragedies to anyone? Con-
sumed by desire
and spurred to
action by his wife,
Macbeth murders
the King and takes
on the Scottish
throne. Unlike any
other typical Shake-
speare marriages,
Macbeth and Lady
Macbeth possess
the passion and mutual ambitions in
their relationship. —RIDDHI SHARMA
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S
HAMLET
Hamlet is one the most intense and
passionate writings of Shakespeare.
It is a tragedy that
travels through the
themes of friend-
ship, madness, and
revenge. Through-
out the play, Hamlet
talks about dying
and the effect of
death on life. This
play weaves despair
and desperation for
murder into a moral obligation.
— ROHAN SINGH
JANE AUSTEN’S
PERSUASION
Persuasion is the idea of a second
chance at love or needing to wait until
it is the right time
to be with someone
you love. This mani-
fests in the romance
between the main
characters, Anne
Elliot and Captain
Wentworth. It dis-
plays Austen’s ma-
turity ih her style of
writing. Persuasion
is the most lyrical and most romantic
work. —MANISHA RAMCHANDANI
JANE AUSTEN’S PRIDE
AND PREJUDICE
Contributing to the classic style of
literature, this novel recites the love
story of Elizabeth
Bennet and Mr Dar-
cy, both of whom
have to conquer
their prejudices,
pride and biases to
make things work
between them. The
book is an absolute
pleasure to read for
someone who is
really into 19th Century mannerisms
and prose. —AYUSH KHANDAL
CHARLOTTE BRONTE’S
JANE EYRE
The novel trails the story of Jane, a
seemingly pure and modest girl as
she battles through
life’s skirmishes.
Jane Eyre is a novel
that has a story
of a girl’s quest
for her autonomy.
Although a Victorian
novel, the themes
appear to be rather
contemporary. The
struggle of a wom-
an’s individuality is always contempo-
rary. —DHRUV SHARMA
VIRGINIA WOOLF’S TO
THE LIGHTHOUSE
This literature recollects memoirs of
childhood passions and highlights ma-
ture relationships.
Amid the novel’s
many figures, it
talks about loss,
subjectivity, the
nature of aestheti-
cism and difficulties
of perception. The
book carries the
struggle to obtain
Female autonomy
which is built upon the fundamentals
of patriarchy. —SHREEYA KHEMKA

The SP and Shivpal’s Pragatisheel Sa- majwadi Party (Lohia) have agreed to ally for the 2022 elec- tions. How much of the bitter- ness still lingers between the nephew and his uncle after the public spat they had five years ago is hard to guess but at this juncture the two have put that behind them for their political survival. Shivpal is said to have influence on at least 20 assembly seats in Etawah and Mainpuri. The split between the two came after Akhilesh divested Shivpal of all ministerial positions. The gulf gradually widened and led to Yadav votes moving away from them in 2017. By allying with smaller par- ties like the RLD, SBSP and PSP, Akhilesh Yadav is geared up for an interesting poll battle. S ongress MLA KR Ramesh Kumar’s disgusting re- mark that “when rape is inevitable, enjoy it” in the Karnataka Assembly is highly con- demnable. So is the laughter by BJP MLAs, including the Speaker, that followed the remark which is an insult to thousands of rape victims. Surprisingly, no member of the House condemned the remark that made light of the trauma which a rape vic- tim undergoes. The remark and the accompanying laughter in the House show utter lack of gender sensitiv- ity in politicians across par- ty lines. Kumar later issued a half-hearted apology, say- ing that he will do so only because of the outrage his remark had caused. Kumar has given the BJP a stick to beat his party with. The sexist remark flies in the face of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s assurance to women on their safety and 40 per cent reservation for them in politics. It also puts the party on the back foot in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. Ideally the MLA should resign if he wants to save Priyanka the blushes and also avoid weak- ening the party’s position against Ajay Mishra, the MoS for Home Affairs. A politician making mi- sogynist remarks is not new. Former Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee presi- dent Mullapally Ramachan- dran once came up with an even more shocking remark in which he reportedly said that if a woman is “sexually assaulted she must die as her honour lies in her vagina”. Ranjeet Shrivastava, BJP MLA from Barabanki, said in 2020 that “if no one sees you being raped, it means you had an affair with the rapist”. POLITICIANS NEED TO BE GENDER SENSITIVE C Kumar has given the BJP a stick to beat his party with. The sexist remark flies in the face of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s assurance to women on their safety and 40 per cent reservation for them in politics THE VALUE OF PURPOSEFUL SOLITUDE ave you ever examined a tiny flower and marvelled at its symmetry and beauty, or looked up at the stars and felt awe at their magnificence? These thoughts enhance our appreciation for the sim- pler things in life. We can en- rich our mind with such wholesome thoughts when opportunity presents itself. It can be calming and relaxing. Who of us does not need to relax? Most people sitting in a doctor’s waiting room are sick simply because they have difficulties in coping with life’s pressures. Meditation basically means to think or consider quietly, soberly and deeply. Meditating on universal prin- ciples can help us to avoid, reduce and deal with anxiety . It enables us to clear our mind, organize our thoughts and evaluate priorities. Today, life is overwhelm- ing and crowded. It moves fast, and we need time to evaluate the events that flash by . Being alone for a time, al- lows us moments for neces- sary reflection, a sheer pleas- ure in itself. Meditation is not lazy day- dreaming or mind rambling with helter-skelter thoughts, but it is guided, purposeful thinking in order to arrive at some definite conclusion. It improves our mind and in- volves asking the following questions in any situation, “how does this affect my life? Does it require I make adjust- ments in my attitude and ac- tions? Can I make a logical prediction as to how a person might react under such cir- cumstances?” Such wholesome thinking gives us inner depth, quiet re- serve and strength – all of which add insight and under- standing to our speech and be- haviour. It also improves com- prehension and memory . Just asadesignerturnsrawmateri- als into an attractive design, meditationenablestoassemble facts into a coherent pattern. The rush of events some- times sweeps us along like a chipof woodontheriver, with no chance to guide or control our course unless we put up a struggle against the current and work our way to a calm pool for pause and reflection. Byshuttingoutsoundsthat assault the ear and blind our- selves to sights that distract the eye, the mind is free to think of other things. It opens the avenues of the mind to new ideas, resulting in explo- rations and creativity . What if our thoughts be- come stagnant and stale? If a room is full, more persons cannot enter. Similarly, when mind is occupied, new thoughts cannot come. Feed- ing upon information, expe- rience and training and giv- ing time for it to filter in, through meditation – revives, renews and replenishes us. Keeping our mind on the surface does not allow us to see the deep thoughts. Time and solitude are the “pick and showel” for mining them through contemplation. Some feel alone when tem- porarily, they are away from others. Their first inclina- tion may be to turn on the music or television. But a certain amount of solitude is our basic need. It is restora- tive and healthy . Forthosewhoareusuallyin the company of others, isola- tion can be a change and can provide fine opportunity for thinking. It can help to better under- stand our views, tendencies, attitude, feelings, ambitions, longings and the like. Creating time for oneself and enjoying one’sowncompanytoareason- able degree promotes personal self sufficiency . Proper meditation deters a person from giving unbal- anced or thoughtless replies. One will avoid speaking rash- ly . Before talking to others, it is best to talk to ourselves, to soliloquize. Such self preparation guides our speech to refresh and enliven others thus build- ing warm relationships. Reading is thinking. It in- volves weighing and compar- ing the ideas extracted from the printed page. For most people, reading is nothing but a method of not thinking. They immerse themselves in popular novels and magazine stories deriving emotional thrills. Reading, without fo- cus, is wasteful. The objective is lost without proper reflec- tion and understanding. Persons facing difficult situations treasure moments to be alone in quiet, private surroundings. It helps to re- main calm and balanced while facing the everyday wear and tear of life. Think- ing on facts, before taking a tough decision, requires time. Snap decisions are of- ten regretted later. Placing too much empha- sis on privacy can create im- balances that can seriously jeopardize our wellbeing. Solitude should be pursued in moderation. It is a reward- ing place to visit but a dan- gerous place in which to re- main. To isolate oneself too much, runs contrary to our basic need to associate and communicate. Clearly, we have many rea- sons to engage in deep, con- centrated thinking about im- portant matters. It is vital to reflect on our past experi- ences, ponder over current matters and thoughtfully contemplate our future. In the same inter- view, he said that other Opposition parties should also project their leader. This had the desired effect and soon, NCP declared Sharad Pawar as the leader. However, Pawar has been declared a leader for decades and has been called some- times as Prime Minis- ter in waiting. Recently, he turned 81 and the party organised a pro- gram on this occasion, in which Chhagan Bhu- jbal praised him and termed Pawar as a can- didate for the post of Prime Minister. Bhujbal referred to the formation of Maha Vikas Aghadi Govern- ment in Maharashtra and termed it as a mira- cle and said that such miracles can be done at the national level as well. NCP leaders be- lieve that if Sharad Pa- war is given the task of uniting the Opposition across the country, he will be successful. On the other hand, Trina- mool Congress and Prashant Kishor want Mamata Banerjee to unite the opposition across the country and come out as the undis- puted leader of a united Opposition. Although Pawar’s age and health are not with him, however he is not one of those who give up. If Nitish Kumar also jumps into this politics in some way in the com- ing days, then the com- petition will become in- teresting. • 11. ife changes every decade though we hardly perceive the changes when they are happening be- cause we have devel- oped a habit of living either in past or imagining a future. Living in present is being considered somewhat sacrilegious to the so-called religio-historical revival plan of many powerful people. People are getting involved in acrimonious debates over the lives of long dead people and their deeds forgetting that they themselves are wasting their own times this way, thereby, missing and messing opportunities to contribute something positive to society and country at this very criti- cal juncture. As far as remote past and unknown future is concerned, most of the as- sumptions of common people border to plain naivety or even stupidity and is not good for mental and emotional health. War, pandemic, fam- ine, floods and technology significantly change human lifestyle by impacting the ways we work for our liveli- hood and rise in living stand- ards. Recent Covid19 pandemic along with skyrocketing of- fice space expenses are push- ing corporates to move their employees towards work from home ( WFH) model and small office home office ( SOHO) idea has become a re- ality for many people. SOHO has its advantages and disad- vantages. A person now re- mains in close contact with family but misses the social interaction and learning po- tential of office environment, WFH is leading to monotony, lethargy and boredom though improving financial health a bit by saving on fuel and oth- er expenses related to com- muting which, though, ap- pears to be a temporary phe- nomenon as the rising elec- tric bill may square it off when using air conditioning at home. So, the overall gain to an employee working from home is not very significant. If we leave aside all these points, it has become a matter of importance that a large number of people are either working at office or at home and are sitting on a chair for a long period of time, so much so that at an average you spend about 2000 hours annu- ally on a chair if you work for five days a week but it has been seen that employers have become greedy to the ex- tent of becoming exploitative because they are sending mails and messages even af- ter normal office hours and forcing the employees to re- spond immediately. It is be- cause of these circumstances that you need a real good chair to save your future pos- ture and health. A good ergo- nomic chair is very comfort- able and improves your pro- ductivity. It is but an expen- sive chair with price ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1,60,000! Work from home is quite monotonous which makes you languish. A cup of well made coffee can lift your spir- it and improve your concen- tration, mood, memory and reaction time. Go for an arti- sanal coffee brand. Your SOHO should also have some office plants like English Ivy, snake plants, spider plants and aloe vera. Love them, watch them, and in no time you should feel the difference as the habit grows within you. Also buy a large beauti- ful painting and study it whenever you are a bit at lei- sure and see the colours com- ing alive. Lighting at the work place is very important, it should not be too bright or too dim. A desk lamp with USB connection can be comforta- ble and easily adjustable and should be supplemented with an overhead light source for general illumination of the room. Florescent lights are a big no for offices. And finally, young genera- tion is getting a fat salary cheque but the working hours are unpredictable and unscientific. This lifestyle keeps a person alive but takes away many beautiful things of life out of human experi- ence because of this continu- ous involvement in office work. The society as a whole had to awaken one day to ask for rationalization of work- ing hours. We should take note of what somebody has rightly said “ work alone is not life, it is only a slice not the whole pizza”. 10 ETC NEW DELHI | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2021 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia F A C E O F T H E D A Y SAKSHI PAREEK, Blogger LEO JULY 24 - AUGUST 23 Someone close may pay you a visit and brighten your day .You will get the opportunity to acquire new property at a good price. GRAB A CUP OF HOT CHOCOLATE TO READ SOME UNAVOIDABLE CLASSIC LITERATURE RECOMMENDED BY OUR READERS FROM RAJASTHAN, UTTAR PRADESH, AHMEDABAD, LUCKNOW DELHI! WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S MACBETH Well, do we have to introduce Shake- spearean tragedies to anyone? Con- sumed by desire and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders the King and takes on the Scottish throne. Unlike any other typical Shake- speare marriages, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth possess the passion and mutual ambitions in their relationship. —RIDDHI SHARMA WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S HAMLET Hamlet is one the most intense and passionate writings of Shakespeare. It is a tragedy that travels through the themes of friend- ship, madness, and revenge. Through- out the play, Hamlet talks about dying and the effect of death on life. This play weaves despair and desperation for murder into a moral obligation. — ROHAN SINGH JANE AUSTEN’S PERSUASION Persuasion is the idea of a second chance at love or needing to wait until it is the right time to be with someone you love. This mani- fests in the romance between the main characters, Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth. It dis- plays Austen’s ma- turity ih her style of writing. Persuasion is the most lyrical and most romantic work. —MANISHA RAMCHANDANI JANE AUSTEN’S PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Contributing to the classic style of literature, this novel recites the love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Dar- cy, both of whom have to conquer their prejudices, pride and biases to make things work between them. The book is an absolute pleasure to read for someone who is really into 19th Century mannerisms and prose. —AYUSH KHANDAL CHARLOTTE BRONTE’S JANE EYRE The novel trails the story of Jane, a seemingly pure and modest girl as she battles through life’s skirmishes. Jane Eyre is a novel that has a story of a girl’s quest for her autonomy. Although a Victorian novel, the themes appear to be rather contemporary. The struggle of a wom- an’s individuality is always contempo- rary. —DHRUV SHARMA VIRGINIA WOOLF’S TO THE LIGHTHOUSE This literature recollects memoirs of childhood passions and highlights ma- ture relationships. Amid the novel’s many figures, it talks about loss, subjectivity, the nature of aestheti- cism and difficulties of perception. The book carries the struggle to obtain Female autonomy which is built upon the fundamentals of patriarchy. —SHREEYA KHEMKA CLASSIC LITERATURE CLASSIC LITERATURE PARTH cityfirst@firstindia.co.in
