PM lauds Operation Ganga in Ukraine
Any campaign associated with the name of mother Ganga (that flows
through Varanasi and Mirzapur) is bound to succeed, asserts PM Modi
Mirzapur (PTI) : Stat-
ing that the entire world
is passing through a
delicate period now,
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi Friday assert-
ed no matter how deep
the crisis is India’s re-
sponse is even bigger.
Addressing an elec-
tion rally here, the PM
also said that thousands
of students have been
brought back from
Ukraine under the on-
going Operation Ganga,
and those still there are
being evacuated.
“The entire world
now is passing through
a ‘najuk daur’ (delicate
period) of this century.
Many countries are to-
day affected by the pan-
demic, unrest and un-
certainty
. But you must
have seen however deep
the crisis is India’s at-
tempts (to address
them) are even bigger
and firm,” he said.
“We have brought
back thousands of stu-
dents from Ukraine un-
der Operation Ganga
safely,” the PM said,
adding special flights
are being operated for
those still stuck there.
Any campaign asso-
ciated with mother
Ganga is bound to suc-
ceed, he added.
“During the corona-
virus period, India
brought every single
citizen stuck abroad by
running Operation
Vande Bharat. Opera-
tion Devi Shakti was
carried out in Afghani-
stan. Now, India is en-
gaged in saving every
citizen and student in
Ukraine,” he added.
The PM said the voters
need to defeat “’pari-
warwadi’ (dynasts) and
‘Mafiawadi’ and bring
the BJP government.
“UP continuously
needs leadership which
is filled with patriotic
spirit, is honest and can
toil hard for develop-
ment. The history of
dynasts (Opposition) is
written in black. Their
history is of looting the
state, freeing terrorists,
helping rioters, patron-
ising the mafia and
criminals.”, he said

Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel on Friday. —PHOTO BY PTI PM Modi during a road show in Varanasi on Friday.
OPPN WORKS TO BREAK THE SOCIETY: MODI
He said the Opposition has only one work -- to
break society, divide the people, and grab power
and loot Uttar Pradesh. “Is this game acceptable
to you?” he asked. He said that during the previ-
ous government in the state, only 800 houses
were built for the poor in Mirzapur, but the Adity-
anath government has sanctioned 40,000 houses,
28,000 of which have already been built.
Yogi urges people to vote

Mirzapur/ Jaun-
pur (ANi): Launch-
ing an attack at the
Opposition UP CM
Yogi Adityanath on
Friday urged people
of UP to vote against
dynastic politics, an-
archy and mafias.
Mirzapur assembly
constituency will go
to polls in the sev-
enth phase.
Addressing a pub-
lic meeting in Mir-
zapur, the CM said,
“Those who deprived
you (public) of every
drop of water, should
be deprived of every
vote. You should vote
in a way that those
who colluded politics
with crime and ma-
fias, brought ‘pari-
varwaad’ and anar-
chy don’t dare to
come in public life
and exploit you.”
Further address-
ing a rally in Jaun-
pur, Yogi said that
unlike the previous
government, the BJP
government did not
discriminate be-
tween people in pro-
viding facilities to
the people. Yogi fu-
ther said that his gov-
ernment believes in
Sabka Saath, Sabka
Vikaas without dis-
crimination.
First India Bureau
Chandauli: Lambast-
ing the SP government
for sheltering the crim-
inals and goons, CM
Yogi on Friday said that
the mafia committing
crimes under SP govt is
now seen on a wheel-
chair and crawling like
a worm instead of
flaunting ‘tamanchas’
(guns) in open jeeps.
Addressing a rally in
the Saiyad Raja assem-
bly constituency of
Chandauli, the CM said,
”If the state will have a
‘dumdar’ (strong) gov-
ernment, then bulldoz-
er and development will
go hand in hand. The
mafia who killed the
‘Yadavs’ in Mau, set fire
to the houses of the
traders, put Mau in the
fire of riots, were pro-
tected by the previous
governments.” Our gov-
ernment has taught
them the right lesson
and put all the mafias in
jails, he added.
The BJP has taken a
decisive lead over oppo-
sition parties in the six
phases of the polls held
so far and trends show
that we have already
crossed the score of 275,
assertedYogiAditynath
on Friday. He said that
on the result day, only
BJP will win.
“When the election
results will come on
March 10, then only
BJP will be visible in
the entire state and due
to the fear of defeat, sev-
eral SP-BSP leaders
have started making
their bookings to flee
abroad.”
The CM said that the
professional criminals
who had come out of
their ‘holes’ during
elections to spread an-
archy in the state have
realized that their mo-
tives will not be ful-
filled. So, they are now
again searching for a
hole to hide.
Hitting out at the pre-
vious SP government
regarding uninterrupt-
ed power supply only
during Eid and Mo-
harram festivals, Yogi
Aditynath went on to
say that now uninter-
rupted power supply
provided during BJP
rule is for everyone, ir-
respective of caste and
religion.

with the other,” Shah
said.
BJP leaders during
their poll campaigns in
the past have accused
the SP of favouring
Muslims and the Ya-
davs when the party
was in power.

to power,” said Shah.
“We have decided to
give girls free scooters.
Also, the students will
be provided free tablets
in the state,” he added.
Referring to
don-turned-politician

nath.
“We are building
homes for poor on the
land which were once
occupied by the mafia
under previous govern-
ments,” the Home Min-
ister claimed.
During the BJP re-
gime, UP has emerged
as the leader in sugar-
cane production and
other agricultural prod-
ucts but under SP and

IN-DEPTH
EXPECTING KOHLI
MAGIC TO REVIVE AT
MOHALI FOR 100TH
TEST CENTURY
irat Kohli is playing
in his landmark
100th Test at Mohali.
His first innings out-
ing may have fallen
short of the expectation of spec-
tators especially for this first
Test against Sri Lanka, but that
does not make Kohli any less leg-
endary than we know him to be.
En route to his 100th Test he
broke quite a few records and led
India to the pinnacle not only
with his masterful batting but
also leadership. With his young
teammates, Kohli transformed
his squad into a fighting unit
which bounced from being one-
Test down to win the series to
stun Australia and England. His
27 hundreds in Tests are only
three short of 30 each by Sunil
Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.
Even if Kohli is unable to hit
a ton in his 100th because of a
lean patch, one must not forget
that even Tendulkar had to wait
for the coveted mark. He has age
and the steely resolve for slam-
ming the hundredth hundred.
V
ndia has ab-
stained from vot-
ing against Russia
yet again reflect-
ing its quandary
for doing a balancing act be-
tween Russia and the United
States. On Friday, India ab-
stained from voting on set-
ting up an independent inter-
national inquiry commission
on rights violations by Russia
in Ukraine. The UN Human
Rights Council’s draft vote
was adopted with 32 votes in
favour, two against and 13 ab-
stentions which included In-
dia, China and Pakistan.
India abstained from vot-
ing against Russia in the UN
General Assembly on
Wednesday. The UNGA vote
was to condemn Russia for
its invasion of Ukraine. It
was one of the 35 countries
which abstained. New Delhi
also stayed away from the
UN Security Council vote to
“deplore in the strongest
terms” the Russian aggres-
sion against Ukraine.
By no logic this can be
termed a non-aligned stand
but the US has no option but
to accept India’s soft tilt to-
wards Moscow. This was obvi-
ous from the Quad meeting
which Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi addressed virtually
.
There were no signs of differ-
ences over India’s stand on
Ukraine as Quad has a differ-
ent target in its cross-hairs.
India, however, could face a
tricky situation if Russia
weretotapIranforoilthrough
the Chabahar port which, it is
understood, India has been
unable to complete for some
reasons. It is a strategically
important port and India has
to watch out for China grab-
bing control of the port.
India has justified its stand
by stressing that “there is no
other choice but to return to
the path of diplomacy and dia-
logue”. Given the situation,
dialogue is the only hope.

I
ven as it is being claimed that
the death of student activist
AnisKhanisbeingpoliticized,
somestudents’unionsinWest
Bengal have joined hands to
protest and seek justice.
Anis died at his home in
Howrah district early on Feb-
ruary 19. The student activ-
ist’s death has triggered
widespread protest at Aliah
University in Kolkata, where
Anis was studying an inte-
grated five-year MBA course.
Anis was actively involved
in protests.
WHAT HIS DAD SAID:
Anis had apparently reached
home late after attending an
Islamic programme which is
referred to as jalsa in the lo-
cal parlance. Around 1am,
Salem Khan, Anis’ dad, heard
a knock on the door.
Salem said he saw four
men (but they were “six to
seven” as per Anis’ brother
Shabir!) who were asking for
Anis. They were “wearing
khaki uniform”, his dad had
said. They “informed” Salem
(as per Salem) that they were
policemen and needed to
speak to Anis. Salem goes on
to say after he opened the
door, one person flashed “a
gun on his temple” while the
rest went inside to look for
Anis, Salem had said this
which was widely reported
in the media.
Salem goes on to say… af-
ter he (Salem) let them in,
they began hitting all in the
family
. He had also said these
people vandalised the house
while looking for Anis, who
was sleeping upstairs. When
these men found him (Anis),
they started beating him
also… Salem had said. The
men had “dragged Khan to
the under-construction sec-
ond floor”… his brother had
mentioned.
Anis’ brother Shabir al-
leged that he had heard Anis’
“struggle” with these per-
sons… though his dad had not
mentioned this… and then
everything was over after the
soundcamethatrockedthem,
the family alleged.
Trinamool Congress stu-
dents’ wing on Monday, took
out a rally in the city protest-
ing against the alleged ef-
forts by Opposition Left and
other organisations to politi-
cise the mysterious death of
student leader Anis Khan.
Trinamool Chhatra Pari-
shad state President Trinan-
kur Bhattacharya, Trina-
mool Youth Congress leader
Debangshu Bhattacharya
were in the forefront of the
rally, in which thousands of
students walked 4 km from
Ramlila Maidan at Entally to
Mayo Road.
“Despite the ordering of a
probe by a special investigat-
ing team in the Anis Khan
death and initiatives to con-
duct a fast investigation by
the TMC government, the Op-
position Left and some other
organisations are trying to
politicise Anis’ unfortunate
death. They are trying to cre-
ate lawlessness and are insti-
gating his family and locals
not to cooperate with the SIT
for political reasons,” Trinan-
kur Bhattacharya had said.
The left students’ wing and
CPI-M had alleged that uni-
formed police personnel
from Amta were behind his
death and demanded the ar-
rest of the officer in-charge
of Amta police station and
action against the SP (Rural)
Howrah.
Meanwhile, Uluberia Dak-
shin MLA and West Bengal
minister Pulak Roy met the
father of Anis at his Amta
residence and later told re-
porters “Vested interests are
trying to mislead the family
and derail the SIT probe for
political reasons. But we
want the truth to come out.
We are with the family
.”
Two persons - a civic vol-
unteer and a home guard at-
tached with Amta police sta-
tion – have been arrested by
the SIT and their custodial
interrogation is on, director
general of police Manoj
Malviya had said.
Anis’ septuagenarian fa-
ther Salem Khan said he
could not see the man in po-
lice uniform in the test iden-
tification parade but assured
that he will cooperate in the
SIT probe as directed by Cal-
cutta High Court.
However, according to
Amta Police, no cops were
sent to his (Anis’) house for
anykindof probe/arrest.The
police have suspected foul
play in the entire episode.
Meanwhile, an SIT, prob-
ing the death case, exhumed
the body for a second autopsy
on Monday in the presence of
a district judge in Amta area
of Howrah district. The Cal-
cutta HC had ordered the sec-
ond post-mortem.
Officials said that the pro-
cess (of exhumation) started
around 12.30 pm. A team of
(three) doctors is supposed to
perform the autopsy at SSKM
Hospital. The second autopsy
will help the SIT estimate the
height and angle at which the
late student activist fell.
On February 23, the SIT
had tried to exhume the body
but had to return without do-
ing so after irate villagers
had stopped it and raised slo-
gans against them.
Last week, home guard
Kashinath Bera and civic po-
lice volunteer Pritam Bhat-
tacharya who were on duty at
Amta police station on Febru-
ary 19 were arrested. The two
arrested policemen said they
are being made scapegoats.
Anis was the state general
secretary of the All-India
Students Federation (AISF)
earlier, he had “reportedly”
joined the Indian Secular
Front led by Abbas Siddique.
The Chief Minister, Mama-
ta Banerjee had earlier or-
dered a SIT probe, which is
supposed to place its report
soon. Meanwhile, Kolkata
Mayor Firhad Hakim alleged
“a deep-rooted conspiracy
.”
Students of Aliah Univer-
sity… supported by Jadavpur
University students as well as
several progressive and dem-
ocratic forces, have hit the
streets to protest Anis’ death.
In Kolkata, these students
carried out marches from
Aliah University and culmi-
nated at the seven-roads
crossing of Park Circus.
Anis’ murder has reunited
students of different campus-
es. Raising slogans of Azadi,
these students who had re-
cently participated in the pro-
test rally against Karnataka’s
hijabrow,arenowdemanding
free and fair investigation.
Student activists have also
visited the bereaved family
members and assured them
assistance.

haven’t eaten in two
days. there is heavy
snowfall in the area and
the temperature is in
minus degrees, the stu-
dents said.
“We are stuck here
for two days without
food or water. There are
some 1,000 students
stranded here. The con-
tractors are asking for
$500 to $700 to take a bus
to Lviv,” one of the stu-
dents said in a video
message. “We haven’t
got any update from the
embassy,” he added.
Lviv is a city in west-

BJP LEADER,
MEMBERS OF
HINDU OUTFIT
BOOKED FOR BID
TO CREATE
COMMUNAL
DISHARMONY
Police registered a case against
a BJP leader and members of a
right-wing Hindu outfit for
allegedly trying to create
communal disharmony over the
burial of a body at a graveyard.
The case was registered after a
scuffle between two groups over
the burial of the body at
Kankarheda on Thursday night.
Subodh Kumar, in-charge of the
Kankarkheda police station, said
Khairunnisa (40), a resident of
Nangla Tashi, had passed away on
Thursday and his family members
reached the graveyard in the area
to bury the body. He said when
the family members were
preparing to bury the body, Dr
Sagar Tomar reached the spot and
stopped them, telling them that
the land belongs to him. He said
he had bought the plot in October,
a claim contested by the family.
Meanwhile, local BJP leader
Dushyant Rohta, Hindu Yuva
Vahini leader Sachin Sirohi and
three others reached the spot and
allegedly got into a scuffle with
the kin of the dead. The officer
said police controlled both sides.
He said police have registered a
case against Dushyant Rohta,
Sachin Sirohi and Sanjay, a
resident of Brahmapuri, for
attempting to create communal
disharmony. —PTI
CERTIFICATES
DISTRIBUTED TO
STUDENTS
UNDER
KARMAYOGI
SCHEME
The first batch of students under
‘Karmyogi Scheme’ were endorsed
and acknowledged by the Hon’ble
Vice Chancellor Prof. Alok Kumar
Rai, University of Lucknow. 30
students received a certificate of
appreciation and 15,000 rupees for
the service rendered in the ‘to earn
while learn’ initiative that provides
financial support to the students.
The Scheme is a drive by Prof. Rai
to implement clause 14.4.2 of NEP
2020 in the University. Prof.
Poonam Tandon, Dean Student
welfare framed the scheme with an
intention to foster equity and
inclusion in the University. Prof
Tandon said that ‘Karmyogi
Scheme’ gives opportunity to
students in developing their skills
and make themselves reliant. The
university encourages the students
to take up part time jobs in the
campus, to support their
expenditure partially under the
Scheme. On this occasion, Prof.
Rai congratulated the first batch of
students on successful completion
of Karmayogi Scheme. He advised
the students to enjoy the taste of
self-earned money which gives
power to their wings to fly and
accomplish their dreams. This is a
milestone in itself as completion of
first cycle of Karmyogi Scheme
reflects on conceptualization of
idea to its successful execution.

AIMIM GOOD OPTION, BUT NOT THIS
ELECTION, SAY MUSLIMS IN EAST UP
AIMIMdoesnotappeartobeaseriouscontenderinmostseatsexceptAzamgarh’sMubarakpurconstituency
Azamgarh/Zahoo-
rabad (PTI): AIMIM
may not win many seats
or may get restricted to
playing the role of
“spoiler” in the Uttar
Pradesh assembly polls
but it has made inroads
into SP and BSP bas-
tions in the state’s east-
ern parts with many
Muslim youth seeing it
as “their own” party
that could be an option
in the future. Muslims
in Uttar Pradesh have
traditionally oscillated
between the Samajwadi
Party (SP) and the Ba-
hujan Samaj Party
(BSP) and that is unlike-
ly to change this time
round as they seem wea-
ry of a division of votes.
The All India Maj-
lis-E-Ittehadul Musli-
meen (AIMIM) does not
appear to be a serious
contender in most seats
albeit Azamgarh’s
Mubarakpur constitu-
ency. However, people
say that in that constit-
uency also, it has more
to do with the strong
candidate Shah Alam,
alias ‘Guddu Jamali’,
rather than the party.
Several Muslims in
parts of eastern Uttar
Pradesh, while ac-
knowledging their lik-
ing for the AIMIM, state
that this election is
about ousting the BJP
government and if they
go for Asaduddin
Owaisi’s party, their
votes would get divided
and hand the advantage
to the BJP But, some
Muslims argue that the
AIMIM is their “own
party” and even if it los-
es, it needs to be sup-
ported so that it ex-
pands. Obaidullah, a
shopkeeper in Phoolpur
Pawai, said Muslims
got nothing in return
for supporting the Con-
gress, the SP and the
BSP as no one voices
their concerns. “Owaisi
raises our voice. Why
should we not vote for
him. We must have our
own party, everyone
else does”: he told PTI.
AIMIM chief Owaisi
has also been aggres-
sively attacking the SP
and the BSP to capital-
ise on this sentiment
and says in his speeches
that these parties have
“back stabbed” Mus-
lims, even after they
voted for them.
The sentiment of the
majority among the
Muslims, however,
seems to be that the SP
or the BSP must be sup-
ported this time as pri-
ority is to remove the
Yogi Adityanath gov-
ernment votes should
not get divided. Matloob
Alam, having tea in a
shop at Sagri, said,
“The AIMIM would
have got votes, but it
will not happen this
time as the main objec-
tive now is to vote out
the Yogi government.
Yes, there is support for
AIMIM also, but it is not
in a position to win.”

Election battle reaches
knockout phase on
March 7 in Purvanchal
First India Bureau
Lucknow: After
bruising each other
but without hitting a
decisive blow in first
five phases of UP As-
sembly elections, the
ruling BJP and main
challenger Samajwa-
di Party have reached
the “knockout phase”
in Purvanchal (East
UP). The sixth phase
polling in the region
on March 3 on 57
seats had also proved
neck and neck as
there are reports that
SP and allies as com-
pared to 2017 had
made some dent into
BJP’s base in Gora-
khpur-Basti region.
Thus, all the political
players-BJP, SP, Con-
gress and BSP have
put in their might in
last phase on March 7
to tilt the balance.
Historically Purvan-
chal had gone with
the winner- BSP in
2007, SP in 2012 and
BJP in 2017. But in
view of seat-to-seat
tough “waveless”
contest the region
might not go with
winner but would it-
self decide the win-
ner. Except in 2012
when the polling had
started from Purvan-
chal and by the time
poll juggernaut
reached West UP, it
had already generat-
ed “SP wave”, the
polling process al-
ways started from
West UP and ended in
east. This time also
the process com-
menced from Jat land
(West UP). However,
this time different de-
mographic combina-
tions and permuta-
tions changed from
phase to phase creat-
ing consternation
amongthepowercon-
tenders in the state
and forcing them to
make more efforts in
each round.

Singh’s oratorical
skill, centered around
making facts and fig-

many candidates to
seek his assistance in
laying out their cam-

His unreserved criti-

cocktail of casteism,
communalism, and cor-

rattled Akhilesh Yadav
so much that he was put

loves him for his articu-

Mau: (PTI) Samajwadi
Party president Akh-
ilesh Yadav on Friday
said the Uttar Pradesh
assembly polls are not
just to elect the govern-
ment of the state but
also to save the Consti-
tution and democracy
of India
Addressing a rally in
Mau for candidates of
the SP and alliance
partner Suheldev Bhar-
tiya Samaj Party
(SBSP), Yadav said the
ongoing state polls are
the biggest elections yet
in the country
.
Yadav also said the
BJP’s frustration of los-
ing the polls is visible in
their actions and lan-
guage, and cited the ex-
ample of attack on SP
leader Swamy Prasad
Maurya and insult to
SBSPchief OmPrakash
Rajbhar. Has not the
languageandbehaviour
of the people, who have
become worried now,
changed? You can see
defeat on their faces
now. They are not just
frustrated but have
started insulting SP
leaders because they
have realised the people
are not with the BJP
now, he claimed.
Yadav claimed the
spirit of the people of
Mau indicates that no
rival party candidates
will win on any assem-
bly seats in the region.
The votes for the
sixth phase have been
caste, the seventh phase
voting is coming up and
I have come here to seek
your support. I am
hopeful you will ensure
victory of SP, and alli-
ance SBSP candidates
from whichever seat
they are contesting on,
he said.
This election is going
to be the country’s big-
gest election. It’s not
only to elect the govern-
ment in UP but also to
save the Constitution of
India, democracy of In-
dia. The people of BJP
have lied to public and
this election is to re-
move such liars from
UP, Yadav said.
The former UP chief
minister also accused
the BJP and its leaders
of spreading lies as he
shared the stage with
alliance candidates, in-
cluding jailed
don-turned-politician
Mukhtar Ansari’s son
Abbas Ansari.
The people of BJP
are amazing.They
touch the water of
mother Ganga, take a
holy dip in it yet contin-
ue to speak lies. The
BJP claims to be the
biggest political party
in the world but no oth-
er party in the world
speaks as much lie as
the BJP does, its people
do, Yadav said.

Jaunpur: (PTI) Samajwadi Party patron Mu-
layam Singh Yadav on Friday alleged discrimi-
nation on caste basis and atrocities on poor as
he hit the campaign trail for party candidates in
Jaunpur for the UP assembly elections.
In his second public address for the seven-
phase UP polls, the 82-year-old founder-patron
of the SP said his party has always worked for
the poor, the youth and the neglected section
of the society. The country is faced with big
challenges today including those of discrimina-
tion of the basis of caste and injustice, atroci-
ties being committed against the poor, he said.
Yadav, Lok Sabha MP from Mainpuri, said
there is no special facility for the poor, the
educated youth are jobless, while farmers who
produce crop do not get adequate price for
their produce.

First India Bureau
Mau (ANI): An FIR

Friday against Abbas
Ansari, son of jailed

Mukhtar Ansari, for
his controversial state-
ment against govern-

Sushil Bhole.
Bhole, while speak-

against Abbas Ansari
under Section 171 F
(Punishment for un-
due influence or per-
sonation at an elec-

public rally had said,
if Samajwadi Party

government is formed
in Uttar Pradesh, he
has asked the SP chief
Akhilesh Yadav not to
transfer the govern-
ment officials for the
next six months as
their ‘Hisab Kitab’
would be done first.
In his defence, later
Ansari told ANI, “The
government officials
have harassed the peo-

bringing out old is-
sues, their family is-

tering fake cases.” He
added, “As per my
knowledge they (gov-

of it. Hence, an inqui-

cases and so I used that
statement.”

Ansari said that the government officials have
harassed the people of Uttar Praedesh unneces-

made money out of it. Hence an inquiry will be
done in these cases and so I used that statement.

ndia’s rich cultural leg-
acy is one of the world’s
oldest civilizations in
the world, and now this
land of God is a melting
pot of religions, tradi-

its traditional jewels.
The treasures of Indian
heritage include art, archi-
tecture, classical dance,
music, flora and fauna,
people’s innate secular
philosophy and royal but
aesthetic clothing tradi-
tions.
This intangible cultural
heritage of India has in-
fluenced many countries.
Many parts of the world
have adopted our diverse
culture, food, language and
elegant clothing style and
have charmed their fash-
ion in many different ways.
In fact, one of the most well-
known traditional gowns in
the world is the Indian Saari,
which is a wrapped garment
and is considered as the most
graceful dress of Indian wom-
en, it elegantly covers the
woman’s entire body and
makes women look elegant
and beautiful.
The saree and lehenga have
an unrivalled elegance and
opulence which have attracted
people around the world.
While we have numerous op-
portunities to wear these en-
sembles throughout the year,
the same cannot be said for
overseas celebrities who have
also taken love to them.
Many International celebri-
ties have proved that Indian
traditional clothing has a
large fan following, by wear-
ing various variants of Indian
fashion in Hollywood films
and shows they showed their
love an respect of our fashion
and culture.
When the time arises, how-

bles with the utmost elegance,
resulting in aesthetically al-

SOPHIE TURNER
Literally, we can’t get enough
of Sophie Turner, who looked
adorable in a Sabyasachi
lehenga at Nick Jonas and
Priyanka Chopra’s wedding re-
ception. Embracing the vibe of
the festivities, Turner was a vi-
sion for the eyes as she looked
stunning in the peach-hued
lehenga, which had flamboyant
sequins and embellishments
scattered decorations all over
the outfit. The actress totally
slew it in Indian attire with
sheer elegance. Seen here with
hubby Joe Jonas.
KIM KARDASHIAN
It seems like with every picture surfacing
from Kim Kardashian’s Vogue India photo
shoot, the US reality TV star gets a little more
Indian. In some beautiful pictures shared by
Kim Kardashian and the magazine, the blonde
star showed up in a shimmery red saree from
designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and also a
printed Anamika Khanna lehenga choli for her
photoshoot with the Vogue India.
CHRISSY TEIGEN
Back in 2021, when the love-
birds #PriNick threw a Diwali
blowout, Chrissy Tiegen put
her desi foot forward during
the glitzy celebration. To cre-
ate a radiant and poppy look,
she draped herself in a purple
embroidered saree from Papa
Don’t Preach with a full-sleeved
blouse and a deep neck. Chrissy
spruced up her look with a
mang tika and styled her hair
in a sleek middle parting. The
diva stole many hearts with her
elegant and sensual look.
BEYONCE
Beyonce left her admirers dumb-
founded as she twirled about in a

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla for
Isha Ambani’s wedding. This ace
singer wore navy blue Anarkali,
which was floor-length and
designed in kaleidoscopic flower
embroidery throughout, as well
as a chiffon blue dupatta with a
vivid pink border. She was looking
extremely beautiful in royal
desi attire as she gave a
powerful performance at
the wedding.

“Tyger, Tyger, Burning
Bright, in the forests of the
night; What immortal hand
or eye, could frame thy
fearful symmetry?”
‘Tiger, Tiger,
Burning Bright’
ore than 200
years ago, in
1794, William
Blake wrote
his immortal
lines- “Tyger,
Tyger, Burn-
ing Bright, in the for-
ests of the night;
What immortal hand
or eye, could frame
thy fearful symme-
try?” He encapsulated
the fearsome, majes-
tic glory of the then
invincible tiger, who
reigned supreme in
the jungles.
We have since then
come a long way. To-
day, our earth is fac-
ing serious ecological
crises- global warm-
ing, chronic resources
shortage, rainforest
destruction, wild jun-
gle fires, floods, vol-
canic eruptions, spe-
cies extinction - every
disaster indicating
towards “end of na-
ture”. God’s Eden be-
comes a wasteland-
mainly because of
man’s greed.
In the early 20th
century, TS Eliot and
his contemporaries
were troubled by the
changing values and
moral depravity of
mankind. Ruskin
Bond, in the second
half, is worried about
the disturbance by
ecological imbalance.
“The ignorant man
has been cheerfully
hacking at the branch
on which he is
perched”. Bond’s call
to turn towards the es-
sence of life and rec-
ognize man-made in-
terdependence is
aimed at “preserving
life- beautiful and
powerful”. He de-
serves recognition
not only as a signifi-
cant Indian writer but
as a human being
with a definite phi-
losophy of life which
embraces mankind.
He forges an intimate
relationship with the
Himalayas and his lit-
eral work seems like a
magic casement open-
ing on a beautiful vast
stretch of nature. He
emphasizes the ami-
cable relationship be-
tween man and Na-
ture - as both are in-
terdependent and in-
terrelated.
This wonder and
wild essence of the
world of animals has
been captured with
deep empathy in the
story of an old, wise
and crafty tiger who
has survived all at-
tempts on his life in
‘Tiger, Tiger, Burning
Bright’ by Ruskin
Bond. “Although the
tiger has passed the
prime of his life, he
has lost none of his
majesties. His mus-
cles rippled beneath
the golden-yellow
coat, as he walked
through the long
grass with the confi-
dence of one who
knew that he was still
a king, even though
his subjects were few-
er”. He lives in a jun-
gle near the Ganga
river. Since new towns
and farms are coming
up, the forest is being
cut. The population of
the wild animals
shrinks drastically
.
Poachers and hunt-
ers stalk lions, tigers
and leopards to dis-
play their skins on the
walls or to sell in the
market. This old tiger,
due to his wisdom and
expertise, is the sole
survivor in this area.
He avoids the river-
bank and instead vis-
its a lake higher up in
the hills to quench his
thirst. The villagers
and their cattle use
this water as well.
They have reached a
level of mutual ac-
ceptance where they
do not disturb each
other. “Sometimes,
when the old tiger was
very lonely, he gave a
great roar, which
shook the whole for-
est. The villagers
thought he was roar-
ing in anger, but the
jungle knew that he
was lonely and sad”.
Ramu, a village boy,
takes his family’s buf-
faloes to the jungle for
grazing. Ramu and
the tiger often see
each other from a safe
distance. One day
Ramu was plucking
Mahua flowers when
a mother bear feeling
insecure about her
baby came out to at-
tack him. The tiger
roared to frighten the
angry bear away and
thus saved Ramu. Lat-
er, when the old ti-
ger’s life is in danger,
due to the arrival of
hunters, it is Ramu
who hangs bits and
pieces of human
clothes in the bushes,
so as to warn the tiger.
The foray made by
Ramu and his com-
panion is the essen-
tial harmony of the
universe.
One day
, luck peters
out for the majestic
beast. The hunters
who had been search-
ing for him- finally
spot him. They shoot
at him while he is
crossing a suspension
bridge. He staggers
and falls into the river
and is washed away by
theswiftcurrents.The
hunters search for
him, but to no avail.
The tiger, carried by
the water, finds him-
self on the banks be-
side a dense forest.
The warm rays of the
sun fill him with re-
newed energy
. “He
raised his head high
and gave a full-throat-
ed roar. He’s finally
greeted by a tigress’s
roar in answer - “call-
ing him, calling him
forward”- leaving us
with a renewed hope
that all is not lost.
‘Tiger, Tiger, Burn-
ing Bright is a story
about all tigers and all
wild animals. It’s
about harmony in
the forest. Forest,
tiger and man are
interdependent.

mony encom-

His first innings out- ing may have fallen short of the expectation of spec- tators especially for this first Test against Sri Lanka, but that does not make Kohli any less leg- endary than we know him to be. En route to his 100th Test he broke quite a few records and led India to the pinnacle not only with his masterful batting but also leadership. With his young teammates, Kohli transformed his squad into a fighting unit which bounced from being one- Test down to win the series to stun Australia and England. His 27 hundreds in Tests are only three short of 30 each by Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. Even if Kohli is unable to hit a ton in his 100th because of a lean patch, one must not forget that even Tendulkar had to wait for the coveted mark. He has age and the steely resolve for slam- ming the hundredth hundred. V ndia has ab- stained from vot- ing against Russia yet again reflect- ing its quandary for doing a balancing act be- tween Russia and the United States. On Friday, India ab- stained from voting on set- ting up an independent inter- national inquiry commission on rights violations by Russia in Ukraine. The UN Human Rights Council’s draft vote was adopted with 32 votes in favour, two against and 13 ab- stentions which included In- dia, China and Pakistan. India abstained from vot- ing against Russia in the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. The UNGA vote was to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. It was one of the 35 countries which abstained. New Delhi also stayed away from the UN Security Council vote to “deplore in the strongest terms” the Russian aggres- sion against Ukraine. By no logic this can be termed a non-aligned stand but the US has no option but to accept India’s soft tilt to- wards Moscow. This was obvi- ous from the Quad meeting which Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi addressed virtually . There were no signs of differ- ences over India’s stand on Ukraine as Quad has a differ- ent target in its cross-hairs. India, however, could face a tricky situation if Russia weretotapIranforoilthrough the Chabahar port which, it is understood, India has been unable to complete for some reasons. India has justified its stand by stressing that “there is no other choice but to return to the path of diplomacy and dia- logue”. Given the situation, dialogue is the only hope. India has justified its stand by stressing that “there is no other choice but to return to the path of diplomacy dialogue” I ven as it is being claimed that the death of student activist AnisKhanisbeingpoliticized, somestudents’unionsinWest Bengal have joined hands to protest and seek justice. Anis died at his home in Howrah district early on Feb- ruary 19. The student activ- ist’s death has triggered widespread protest at Aliah University in Kolkata, where Anis was studying an inte- grated five-year MBA course. Anis was actively involved in protests. WHAT HIS DAD SAID: Anis had apparently reached home late after attending an Islamic programme which is referred to as jalsa in the lo- cal parlance. Around 1am, Salem Khan, Anis’ dad, heard a knock on the door. Salem said he saw four men (but they were “six to seven” as per Anis’ brother Shabir!) who were asking for Anis. They were “wearing khaki uniform”, his dad had said. They “informed” Salem (as per Salem) that they were policemen and needed to speak to Anis. Salem goes on to say after he opened the door, one person flashed “a gun on his temple” while the rest went inside to look for Anis, Salem had said this which was widely reported in the media. Salem goes on to say… af- ter he (Salem) let them in, they began hitting all in the family . He had also said these people vandalised the house while looking for Anis, who was sleeping upstairs. When these men found him (Anis), they started beating him also… Salem had said. The men had “dragged Khan to the under-construction sec- ond floor”… his brother had mentioned. Anis’ brother Shabir al- leged that he had heard Anis’ “struggle” with these per- sons… though his dad had not mentioned this… and then everything was over after the soundcamethatrockedthem, the family alleged. Trinamool Congress stu- dents’ wing on Monday, took out a rally in the city protest- ing against the alleged ef- forts by Opposition Left and other organisations to politi- cise the mysterious death of student leader Anis Khan. Trinamool Chhatra Pari- shad state President Trinan- kur Bhattacharya, Trina- mool Youth Congress leader Debangshu Bhattacharya were in the forefront of the rally, in which thousands of students walked 4 km from Ramlila Maidan at Entally to Mayo Road. “Despite the ordering of a probe by a special investigat- ing team in the Anis Khan death and initiatives to con- duct a fast investigation by the TMC government, the Op- position Left and some other organisations are trying to politicise Anis’ unfortunate death. They are trying to cre- ate lawlessness and are insti- gating his family and locals not to cooperate with the SIT for political reasons,” Trinan- kur Bhattacharya had said. The left students’ wing and CPI-M had alleged that uni- formed police personnel from Amta were behind his death and demanded the ar- rest of the officer in-charge of Amta police station and action against the SP (Rural) Howrah. Meanwhile, Uluberia Dak- shin MLA and West Bengal minister Pulak Roy met the father of Anis at his Amta residence and later told re- porters “Vested interests are trying to mislead the family and derail the SIT probe for political reasons. But we want the truth to come out. We are with the family .” Two persons - a civic vol- unteer and a home guard at- tached with Amta police sta- tion – have been arrested by the SIT and their custodial interrogation is on, director general of police Manoj Malviya had said. Anis’ septuagenarian fa- ther Salem Khan said he could not see the man in po- lice uniform in the test iden- tification parade but assured that he will cooperate in the SIT probe as directed by Cal- cutta High Court. However, according to Amta Police, no cops were sent to his (Anis’) house for anykindof probe/arrest.The police have suspected foul play in the entire episode. Meanwhile, an SIT, prob- ing the death case, exhumed the body for a second autopsy on Monday in the presence of a district judge in Amta area of Howrah district. The Cal- cutta HC had ordered the sec- ond post-mortem. Officials said that the pro- cess (of exhumation) started around 12.30 pm. A team of (three) doctors is supposed to perform the autopsy at SSKM Hospital. The second autopsy will help the SIT estimate the height and angle at which the late student activist fell. On February 23, the SIT had tried to exhume the body but had to return without do- ing so after irate villagers had stopped it and raised slo- gans against them. Last week, home guard Kashinath Bera and civic po- lice volunteer Pritam Bhat- tacharya who were on duty at Amta police station on Febru- ary 19 were arrested. The two arrested policemen said they are being made scapegoats. Anis was the state general secretary of the All-India Students Federation (AISF) earlier, he had “reportedly” joined the Indian Secular Front led by Abbas Siddique. The Chief Minister, Mama- ta Banerjee had earlier or- dered a SIT probe, which is supposed to place its report soon. Meanwhile, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim alleged “a deep-rooted conspiracy .” Students of Aliah Univer- sity… supported by Jadavpur University students as well as several progressive and dem- ocratic forces, have hit the streets to protest Anis’ death. In Kolkata, these students carried out marches from Aliah University and culmi- nated at the seven-roads crossing of Park Circus. Anis’ murder has reunited students of different campus- es. Raising slogans of Azadi, these students who had re- cently participated in the pro- test rally against Karnataka’s hijabrow, arenowdemanding free and fair investigation. He said when the family members were preparing to bury the body, Dr Sagar Tomar reached the spot and stopped them, telling them that the land belongs to him. He said he had bought the plot in October, a claim contested by the family. Meanwhile, local BJP leader Dushyant Rohta, Hindu Yuva Vahini leader Sachin Sirohi and three others reached the spot and allegedly got into a scuffle with the kin of the dead. Prof. Poonam Tandon, Dean Student welfare framed the scheme with an intention to foster equity and inclusion in the University. Prof Tandon said that ‘Karmyogi Scheme’ gives opportunity to students in developing their skills and make themselves reliant. The university encourages the students to take up part time jobs in the campus, to support their expenditure partially under the Scheme. On this occasion, Prof. Rai congratulated the first batch of students on successful completion of Karmayogi Scheme. He advised the students to enjoy the taste of self-earned money which gives power to their wings to fly and accomplish their dreams. This is a milestone in itself as completion of first cycle of Karmyogi Scheme reflects on conceptualization of idea to its successful execution. —First India Bureau AIMIM GOOD OPTION, BUT NOT THIS ELECTION, SAY MUSLIMS IN EAST UP AIMIMdoesnotappeartobeaseriouscontenderinmostseatsexceptAzamgarh’sMubarakpurconstituency Azamgarh/Zahoo- rabad (PTI): AIMIM may not win many seats or may get restricted to playing the role of “spoiler” in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls but it has made inroads into SP and BSP bas- tions in the state’s east- ern parts with many Muslim youth seeing it as “their own” party that could be an option in the future. Muslims in Uttar Pradesh have traditionally oscillated between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Ba- hujan Samaj Party (BSP) and that is unlike- ly to change this time round as they seem wea- ry of a division of votes. The All India Maj- lis-E-Ittehadul Musli- meen (AIMIM) does not appear to be a serious contender in most seats albeit Azamgarh’s Mubarakpur constitu- ency. However, people say that in that constit- uency also, it has more to do with the strong candidate Shah Alam, alias ‘Guddu Jamali’, rather than the party. Several Muslims in parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, while ac- knowledging their lik- ing for the AIMIM, state that this election is about ousting the BJP government and if they go for Asaduddin Owaisi’s party, their votes would get divided and hand the advantage to the BJP But, some Muslims argue that the AIMIM is their “own party” and even if it los- es, it needs to be sup- ported so that it ex- pands. Obaidullah, a shopkeeper in Phoolpur Pawai, said Muslims got nothing in return for supporting the Con- gress, the SP and the BSP as no one voices their concerns. “Owaisi raises our voice. Why should we not vote for him. We must have our own party, everyone else does”: he told PTI. AIMIM chief Owaisi has also been aggres- sively attacking the SP and the BSP to capital- ise on this sentiment and says in his speeches that these parties have “back stabbed” Mus- lims, even after they voted for them. The sentiment of the majority among the Muslims, however, seems to be that the SP or the BSP must be sup- ported this time as pri- ority is to remove the Yogi Adityanath gov- ernment votes should not get divided. Matloob Alam, having tea in a shop at Sagri, said, “The AIMIM would have got votes, but it will not happen this time as the main objec- tive now is to vote out the Yogi government. Yes, there is support for AIMIM also, but it is not in a position to win.” AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi —FILE PHOTO ‘AIMIM WILL NOT CROSS 5,000 VOTES’ Election battle reaches knockout phase on March 7 in Purvanchal First India Bureau Lucknow: After bruising each other but without hitting a decisive blow in first five phases of UP As- sembly elections, the ruling BJP and main challenger Samajwa- di Party have reached the “knockout phase” in Purvanchal (East UP). The sixth phase polling in the region on March 3 on 57 seats had also proved neck and neck as there are reports that SP and allies as com- pared to 2017 had made some dent into BJP’s base in Gora- khpur-Basti region. Thus, all the political players-BJP, SP, Con- gress and BSP have put in their might in last phase on March 7 to tilt the balance. Historically Purvan- chal had gone with the winner- BSP in 2007, SP in 2012 and BJP in 2017. But in view of seat-to-seat tough “waveless” contest the region might not go with winner but would it- self decide the win- ner. Except in 2012 when the polling had started from Purvan- chal and by the time poll juggernaut reached West UP, it had already generat- ed “SP wave”, the polling process al- ways started from West UP and ended in east. This time also the process com- menced from Jat land (West UP). However, this time different de- mographic combina- tions and permuta- tions changed from phase to phase creat- ing consternation amongthepowercon- tenders in the state and forcing them to make more efforts in each round. —REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGE The 7th phase in UP’s most backward and poverty-gripped region with remaining 54 seats has become “do-or- die” battle for all Girl’s body found in Ganga canal Muzaffarnagar (PTI): The body of a girl who jumped into the Ganga ca- nal last week was recovered from a canal under Bhopa police station in the district, police said on Friday . The Division Bench of Justice Ashwani Ku- mar Mishra and Justice Rajnish Kumar passed this order while hear- ing a petition filed by Atiq-Ur-Rehman and 2 Others. Rehman was ar- rested by UP Police on his way to Hathras along with Kerala jour- nalist Siddique Kappan and 2 others while they were going to meet the family members of the gang rape and murder victim. After being held by UP Police, Rehman was slapped with Sec- tions 17 and 18 of Un- lawful Activities (Pre- vention) Act (UAPA), Sedition (S. 124-A IPC), Promoting enmity be- tween different groups on ground of religion (S. 153-A IPC), deliber- ate malicious acts in- tended to outrage reli- gious feelings (S. 295-A IPC) and Section 65, 72 and 75 of the IT Act. Ad- ditional Advocate Gen- eral raised preliminary objection to the main- tainability of the Habe- as Corpus petition on the following 3 grounds: 1. That the matter has travelled up to the SC in Writ Petition (Criminal) No 307 of 2020 in which the Supreme Court has taken note of the fact that the accused was produced before a juris- dictional court after ar- rest and that a volumi- nous charge sheet has alreadybeenfiledbefore the court concerned. 2. Once seen and con- sidered as the nemesis of former finance min- ister P Chidambaram, former ED officer told First India, “I want to enjoy my newly found freedomasanMLAcan- didate traveling all across, delivering speeches and motivat- ing youths. This is something anyone would want to enjoy af- ter decades of an anon- ymous stint as a civil servant.” Singh belongs to an illustrious family of bu- reaucrats with his brothers, sisters, and manyrelativesreaching to the top echelons of administration. His wife Lakshmi Singh is an Inspector General of Police of the Lucknow zoneandhisfatherRam Bahadur Singh retired fromaseniorpost(DIG), received the President gallantry award, and a road in Lucknow is named after him. Singh is well remem- bered for investigating high-profile scams like Aircel-Maxis, Westland Helicopter,2Gspectrum allocation, the Com- monwealth Games scam, Amrapali, Noida Ponzi Scheme, Gomti Riverfront, and the coal mines allocation. Vari- ouspollsurveyssuggest that he could win the Sarojini Nagar seat, the only debatable point be- ing the margin of his victory . His seat is the focus of discussion not only among state politi- ciansbuthasalsodrawn curious attention from New Delhi’s power cor- ridors. Singh’s oratorical skill, centered around making facts and fig- ures easily under- standable to the com- mon folks, has drawn many candidates to seek his assistance in laying out their cam- paign format. His unreserved criti- cisms of the Samajwadi Party’s politics of undi- luted and dangerous cocktail of casteism, communalism, and cor- ruption are said to have rattled Akhilesh Yadav so much that he was put on the backfoot dissoci- ating himself with the well-known dons and Islamists. The media loves him for his articu- lation. On a single day on February 21, 2022, over 18 channels inter- viewed him and he is said to have swayed and carried the anchors with him. In the bureaucratic circles across cadres, batches, and services, the high-decibel elec- tioncampaignof Saroji- ni Nagar has been a talking point. In a short span of just 20 days, his election campaign is said to have moved like ablitzacrosshisconstit- uency . He has also visit- ed other constituencies. His campaign has the blessings of Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi, Defense Min- isterRajnathSingh, and former Union minister Uma Bharti besides, of course, of CM Yogi Adi- tyanath who also held a megaroadshowforhim. Union Minister Kaushal Kishore too held several rallies in his support. Apna Dal (S) national president AnupriyaPateltoocam- paigned for him. The opposi- tion is also not letting anything go in cam- paigning against him. The SP candidate against Singh is a close ally of Akhilesh and is backed to the hilt. Pri- yanka Gandhi, too, held a rally against him. It’s a tough fight in the sense of winning the hearts and minds of the people. Mau: (PTI) Samajwadi Party president Akh- ilesh Yadav on Friday said the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls are not just to elect the govern- ment of the state but also to save the Consti- tution and democracy of India Addressing a rally in Mau for candidates of the SP and alliance partner Suheldev Bhar- tiya Samaj Party (SBSP), Yadav said the ongoing state polls are the biggest elections yet in the country . Yadav also said the BJP’s frustration of los- ing the polls is visible in their actions and lan- guage, and cited the ex- ample of attack on SP leader Swamy Prasad Maurya and insult to SBSPchief OmPrakash Rajbhar. Has not the languageandbehaviour of the people, who have become worried now, changed? You can see defeat on their faces now. They are not just frustrated but have started insulting SP leaders because they have realised the people are not with the BJP now, he claimed. Yadav claimed the spirit of the people of Mau indicates that no rival party candidates will win on any assem- bly seats in the region. The votes for the sixth phase have been caste, the seventh phase voting is coming up and I have come here to seek your support. I am hopeful you will ensure victory of SP, and alli- ance SBSP candidates from whichever seat they are contesting on, he said. This election is going to be the country’s big- gest election. It’s not only to elect the govern- ment in UP but also to save the Constitution of India, democracy of In- dia. The people of BJP have lied to public and this election is to re- move such liars from UP, Yadav said. The former UP chief minister also accused the BJP and its leaders of spreading lies as he shared the stage with alliance candidates, in- cluding jailed don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari. The people of BJP are amazing. They touch the water of mother Ganga, take a holy dip in it yet contin- ue to speak lies. The BJP claims to be the biggest political party in the world but no oth- er party in the world speaks as much lie as the BJP does, its people do, Yadav said. New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Fri- day agreed to hear on March 11 a plea chal- lenging the grant of bail by the Allahabad High Court to Ashish Mishra, son of Union minister Ajay Mishra, in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri vio- lence that left eight peo- ple, including four farmers, dead. A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ra- mana took note of the submissions of lawyer Prashant Bhushan that the other accused in the case are moving courts for grant of bail citing the relief granted to Ashish Mishra and asked him to intimate the high court that the top court is hearing the plea for cancellation of bail. I can list on March 11 only. Other judges have to be available, the CJI said. A single-judge bench of the high court, on February 10, had grant- ed bail to Mishra who had spent four months in custody . Bhushan submitted that the HC while grant- ing the bail, did not fol- low the law laid down and did not consider aspects like tampering with evidence and flee- ing from justice. The problem is that other accused are also mov- ing,” he added. He sought a direction to the HC that for the time being, the bail plea of other accused be not considered. In his defence, later Ansari told ANI, “The government officials have harassed the peo- ple of Uttar Pradesj unnecessarily by bringing out old is- sues, their family is- sues and even by regis- tering fake cases.” He added, “As per my knowledge they (gov- ernment officials) have made money out of it. We have since then come a long way. To- day, our earth is fac- ing serious ecological crises- global warm- ing, chronic resources shortage, rainforest destruction, wild jun- gle fires, floods, vol- canic eruptions, spe- cies extinction - every disaster indicating towards “end of na- ture”. God’s Eden be- comes a wasteland- mainly because of man’s greed. In the early 20th century, TS Eliot and his contemporaries were troubled by the changing values and moral depravity of mankind. Ruskin Bond, in the second half, is worried about the disturbance by ecological imbalance. “The ignorant man has been cheerfully hacking at the branch on which he is perched”. Bond’s call to turn towards the es- sence of life and rec- ognize man-made in- terdependence is aimed at “preserving life- beautiful and powerful”. He de- serves recognition not only as a signifi- cant Indian writer but as a human being with a definite phi- losophy of life which embraces mankind. He forges an intimate relationship with the Himalayas and his lit- eral work seems like a magic casement open- ing on a beautiful vast stretch of nature. He emphasizes the ami- cable relationship be- tween man and Na- ture - as both are in- terdependent and in- terrelated. This wonder and wild essence of the world of animals has been captured with deep empathy in the story of an old, wise and crafty tiger who has survived all at- tempts on his life in ‘Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright’ by Ruskin Bond. “Although the tiger has passed the prime of his life, he has lost none of his majesties. His mus- cles rippled beneath the golden-yellow coat, as he walked through the long grass with the confi- dence of one who knew that he was still a king, even though his subjects were few- er”. He lives in a jun- gle near the Ganga river. Since new towns and farms are coming up, the forest is being cut. The population of the wild animals shrinks drastically . Poachers and hunt- ers stalk lions, tigers and leopards to dis- play their skins on the walls or to sell in the market. This old tiger, due to his wisdom and expertise, is the sole survivor in this area. He avoids the river- bank and instead vis- its a lake higher up in the hills to quench his thirst. The villagers and their cattle use this water as well. They have reached a level of mutual ac- ceptance where they do not disturb each other. “Sometimes, when the old tiger was very lonely, he gave a great roar, which shook the whole for- est. The villagers thought he was roar- ing in anger, but the jungle knew that he was lonely and sad”. Ramu, a village boy, takes his family’s buf- faloes to the jungle for grazing. Ramu and the tiger often see each other from a safe distance. One day Ramu was plucking Mahua flowers when a mother bear feeling insecure about her baby came out to at- tack him. The tiger roared to frighten the angry bear away and thus saved Ramu. Lat- er, when the old ti- ger’s life is in danger, due to the arrival of hunters, it is Ramu who hangs bits and pieces of human clothes in the bushes, so as to warn the tiger. The foray made by Ramu and his com- panion is the essen- tial harmony of the universe. One day , luck peters out for the majestic beast. The hunters who had been search- ing for him- finally spot him. They shoot at him while he is crossing a suspension bridge. He staggers and falls into the river and is washed away by theswiftcurrents. The hunters search for him, but to no avail. The tiger, carried by the water, finds him- self on the banks be- side a dense forest. The warm rays of the sun fill him with re- newed energy . “He raised his head high and gave a full-throat- ed roar. He’s finally greeted by a tigress’s roar in answer - “call- ing him, calling him forward”- leaving us with a renewed hope that all is not lost. ‘Tiger, Tiger, Burn- ing Bright is a story about all tigers and all wild animals. It’s about harmony in the forest. Forest, tiger and man are interdependent. Nature’s har- mony encom- passes all c r e a t u r e s - great small, beau- tiful ugly, strong w e a k .
