Finn worked as a gap assistant at Lancing College from January 2015 to December 2015. He took on a wide range of duties including lifeguarding, working as a library assistant, administrative work, and pastoral duties in a boarding house. Finn quickly adapted to the rigors of boarding school life and built professional relationships with pupils of all ages. He was well-liked by both staff and students for his excellent personality and maturity. Finn also contributed greatly to sports, coaching and leading various teams in hockey, cricket, and football for younger students. His former supervisor believes Finn will be an asset to any future employer or education due to his strong work ethic and range of experiences.

Finn worked as a gap Assistant at Lancing College from January 2015 to December
2015. I am very pleased to say that out of all the gap students in recent years, Finn
has shown the most progression and development. The role is one with intrinsic
difficulties: being a member of staff whilst being the same age as some of the pupils;
living with a boarding house and socialising with pupils yet being expected to
maintain clear boundaries; often being privy to information from both the staff and
pupil domain yet needing to exercise discretion. Finn managed these areas of his life
at Lancing very well and in a mature and sensible manner. He was always willing to
assist and was someone who would always see a task through to it’s’ end.
His range of duties was wide. He has been a lifeguard for the school pool, looking
after pupils, staff and their families. He has also been trained as a Library Assistant
and has proved able and efficient in this role. He has worked as an administrative
assistant within the Head Master’s office and has also been involved in various
conservation projects around the campus. Finn also played a pastoral role in one of
the boys’ boarding houses in which he was resident. His duties have thus
encompassed working with pupils aged 13-18. Of particular note was his ability to
build professional relationships with pupils from all year groups; he was a very
popular member of the house staff. Boarding duties were a new experience for Finn
and he quickly adapted to the rigours of early mornings and some late working
nights. Throughout his stay at Lancing Finn’s experience widened and his maturity
towards all areas of the role grew. His excellent personality shone through in all the
he did and he was well liked by both staff and students.
It was on the sports fields of Lancing College that Finn contributed a great deal. He
took teams in the U14 and U15 age group for Hockey, Cricket and Football. He led
sessions, officiated, coached squad players, supervised weekend activities for
boarders and assisted with the administration and running of inter-school
competitions. It was in the Hockey season that he proved to have most effect,
actively developing the interest of U14b team as well as motivating them to attend
practices and matches punctually. He mixed well with staff and pupils alike and
coped well with the many challenges that were sent his way. Finn has been evident
in ‘front of house’ roles (such as Open Days) and was always well presented. He will
be missed at Lancing, but I am sure that he will be an asset to any employer or to
any higher education course that he undertakes.
