GRADUATE

OF

July

2014
To
Whom
It
May
Concern:
This
communication
is
to
verify
that
Mr.
John
Lin
completed
for
the
second
consecutive
year
a
paid
four-‐week
internship
with
the
California
World
Language
Project,
based
in
the
Stanford
University
Graduate
School
of
Education.
Due
to
his
exceptional
performance
last
year
in
supporting
the
implementation
of
a
national
initiative,
STARTALK,
which
aims
to
teach
Chinese
language
and
culture
to
middle
school
students,
Mr.
Lin’s
services
were
requested
unanimously
by
all
members
of
the
instructional
and
administrative
team
for
the
program.
Although,
none
of
us
thought
that
it
was
possible
for
Mr.
Lin
to
perform
at
a
higher
level
than
last
year,
he
proved
us
wrong
and
his
renewed
commitment
and
dedication
to
the
program’s
goals
are
unparalleled
in
our
community.
He
is
the
most
thoughtful
young
man
that
I
have
ever
encountered
in
my
entire
academic
and
professional
career
and,
coupled
with
his
high
sense
of
responsibility,
merited
the
respect
and
admiration
of
all
of
the
program’s
staff
as
well
as
participants.
His
high
level
of
competency
in
the
language
and
culture
was
a
major
asset
to
the
program
and
especially
in
the
area
of
encouraging
students
to
have
the
confidence
to
take
risks
and
embrace
the
new
Chinese
language
and
its
cultural
practices
and
products
as
a
new
way
of
understanding
our
society’s
diverse
perspectives
for
interpreting
and
being
in
the
world.
Again,
this
year,
Mr.
Lin
assumed
the
role
of
Editor
for
our
program’s
newsletter.
Using
the
conventions
of
professional
journalism,
he
expertly
documented
the
program’s
learning
strategies
and
illustrated
them
with
photographs
that
captured
the
students
totally
engaged
in
the
learning
process.
The
newsletter
received
many
commendations
from
the
students’
parents
as
well
as
educators
who
received
it
weekly
over
the
course
of
the
four-‐week
program.
In
my
role
as
director
of
the
STARTALK
program,
I
never
ceased
to
be
impressed
by
Mr.
John
Lin’s
dedication
and
commitment
to
our
program.
As
stated
earlier,
he
exceeded
our
highest
expectations
in
every
sense
of
the
word
and
his
performance
was
exemplary
throughout
the
four
weeks.
I
would
be
more
than
pleased
to
expand
on
Mr.
Lin’s
performance
and
contributions
to
our
program
anytime
and
I
may
be
reached
by
telephone

To

Concern:
This

is
to

that
Mr.

successfully
completed
a
paid
internship
program
of
four
weeks
with
the
California
World

Project,
based
in
the
Stanford
University
Graduate
School
of

During
the
four-‐week
internship,
Mr.
Lin
engaged
in
a
variety
of
activities
pertaining
to
the
implementation
of
a
national
initiative,
STARTALK,
that
aims
to
teach
Chinese
language
and

to
middle

students.
Mr.
Lin’s
high
level
of
competency
in
the
language
and
culture
was
a
major
asset
to
the
program,
both
in
the
preparation
of
instructional
materials,
but
also
during
the
actual
classes
where
he
coached
and
supported
students
by
leading
activities,
working
with
them
in
small
groups
and
perhaps
most
of
all
encouraging
students
and
engendering
in
the
them
the
confidence
that
they
could
learn
Chinese
language
and
culture.
During
exit
interviews
with
the
students,
many
often
cited
John’s
assistance
as
one
of
the
most
valuable
aspects
of
the
program.
In
addition
to
providing
invaluable
levels
of
support
to
the
instructional
program,
Mr.
Lin
took
it
upon
himself
to
suggest
that
we
create
a
weekly
newsletter
to
send
home
to
parents
highlighting
the
multiple
activities
and
providing
images
of
their
children
learning
Chinese.
Mr.
Lin
took
the
lead
role
in
editing
such
newsletters
each
week
and
they
were
not
only
greatly
appreciated
by
the
parents
and
other
program
stakeholders,
they
became
a
primary
source
for
documenting
the
activities
and
learning
strategies
employed
to
teach
the
students
Chinese
language
and
culture
and
will
be
one
of
the
datasets
used
to
formally
evaluate
the
program.
As
the
director
of
the
STARTALK
program,
I
was
extremely
impressed
by
Mr.
John
Lin’s
contributions
to
the
program
for
they
far
exceed
both
the
instructors’
and
my
expectations
of
a
high
school
intern.
His
knowledge
and
competence
is
only
exceeded
by
his
commitment
and
dedication
to
perform
at
a
level
that
more
parallels
the
very
best
university
intern.
Mr.
Lin
merits
our
highest
accolades
for
his
exceptional
performance
during
the
course
of
this
internship.
Should
you
