2. INTRODUCTION
Responding negatively to a challenging situation is a serious matter with
wide - ranging consequences not just for schools, but for the entire society. The
occurrences of negative socio-emotional behavior, presence of violent and
aggressive peers can significantly disturb the positive learning environment.
It has been observed in LNHS that Grade 11 students displayed negative
socio-emotional behavior and respond negatively to challenging situations. This
problem was confirmed in the recorded cases in the guidance office and the
observation of subject teachers. Thus, this action research was conceptualized to
improve the socio- emotional behavior of the students by applying the
Skillstreaming approach .
3. METHODS
• The study had these specific problems: (1) to assess the level of socio-emotional behavior of the Grade 11
students before using the skill streaming approach; (2) to determine the level of socio-emotional behavior
of the Grade 11 students after using the SKILLSTREAMING approach; (3) to evaluate the significant
improvement on the socio-emotional behavior of the Grade 11 students.
• The participants of this study were the 32 Grade 11 students who were identified committing cases of
misbehavior and responding negatively to challenging situations. This study adopted the pre- assessment
and post- assessment design which involves gathering of basic evidence prior to administering
intervention, followed by a post assessment on the same extent after intervention happens. This study
utilized the triangulation approach of research since it depend on observation and documentary analysis
on recorded cases of misbehavior. The level of socio-emotional behavior of the students were gathered
through self- assessment using questionnaire checklist as baseline data and basis for intervention
activities.
• The researcher considered SKILLSTREAMING approach as an intervention to improve the socio-
emotional behavior of the Grade 11 students. The participants undergo combination of cognitive-
behavioral activities to improve their socio- emotional competencies. Collected data were treated through
the use of quantitative analysis.
•
4. RESULT
On the basis of data analysis, the researcher arrived with the following findings:
• The level of socio-emotional behavior of the Grade 11 students is not yet sufficient
to respond positively to challenging situations.
• Based on the post- intervention assessment, it revealed that there was an evident
improvement in the socio-emotional behavior of the Grade 11 students with regards
to dealing with others, avoiding aggression, dealing with their feelings and managing
their stress.
• There was significant improvement on the level of socio- emotional behavior of the
Grade 11 students as revealed by p-value of .0002 level of significant.
5. DISCUSSION
•The result of post- intervention assessment revealed
markedly improvement on the level of socio- emotional
behavior of the students. This result implied that the
Skillstreaming approach has significant impact in the socio-
emotional behavior of Grade 11 students of LNHS. The
significant improvement on the behavior of the students
warrants the effectiveness of the Skillstreaming approach as
an intervention strategy in improving socio-emotional
behavior.
