2. I learnt that Intertextuality refers to the interconnected ways in which
one media product stands in relation to another product to produce a
meaning.
It’s effectiveness is often relying on the readers prior knowledge and
understanding of the secondary product.
In my research work there are 7 types of intertextual media, which are:
Bricolage
Calque
Homage
Hybridity
Parody
Pastiche
Translation.
3. Bricolage
Bricolage is actually a product that is made from combining different existing
materials in a collection or creating something innovative out of nothing or using
two different tools to create something new and different. For example Sasha Sloan
older the video is from her childhood videos and memories she took those
memories of getting older and made it into a music video with lyrics that illustrate.
4. Calque
In media it means changing a text from one language to another for example
Chateau by Blackbear. It’s a Where he uses English lyrics yet adds the title and
phrases from French in between.
Suite veintitrés at the Chateau
Had a heart, man I'm tryna get it back though
White linen, white rose, let's go, oh, oh
…..
Suite 23 at the Chateau
Had a heart, man I'm tryna get it back though
Tryna get it back, tryna get it back, tryna get it back
5. Homage
Homage is basically when an one artist gives tribute or respect to another artist. The
artist may adapt a similar look, or style or dance moves. For example, Michael
Jackson came up with the moon walk move and till now, people use that move as a
tribute to him (for example, JustinTimberlake) Speaking of JustinTimberlake, he
gave Homage to Michael Jackson in his music video “Love Never Felt So Good”
6. Hybridity
Hybridity is all about mixing and sampling different kinds of music, tv shows ,
advertisements films etc
TakingTove Lo’s Glad he is gone for example
The song Includes scenes from Orange is the new black , Mission Impossible and
Salt etc
7. Parody
It is a piece of work that imitates another production in order to comment , trivialize or
satirize. It Basically aims to mock an original idea in a light comic or a critical way for
exampleThankyou Brent by Brent Rivera was made as a parody of thankyou next –
Ariana grande.
8. Pastiche
It is a creative work that imitates another author or genre. It’s a way of paying
respect, or honor, to great works of the past. Pastiche differs from parody in that
pastiche isn’t making fun of the works it imitates – however, the tone of pastiche is
often humorous.
Sam SmithsWritings on the wall could be considered as
homage to their original text but what Writings on the
Wall does differently is that it uses bricolage and
pastiche. The video uses scenes directly from the film
which inspired it.They have pasted together scenes
directly from the film with Smith singing in scenes that
were used for the film. This could be seen as pastiche as
they are recreating scenes directly from the James Bond
films in a respectful way.
9. Translation
Translation is basically when the message of a text is changed from one medium to another.
For example one of my favorites include “This is gospel” by panic at the disco where in the video he is
dyingThe video came out in 2013 where as in 2015 his video “ emperors new clothes came out which had
the ending of this is gospel. It showed a translation in the two videos
