2. National
Magazines
• Produce issues of a consistent genre
• Content varying from interviews, reviews, exclusive comments
• May have a specific target audience but aim to cater to a wide variety of people for
a larger following
• Commonly targeted at younger audiences due to the modern genres they usually
cover
• Coverpages usually feature a number of sell lines to appeal to a variety of people,
and to cover as many interests as possible
• Usually cost more due to a larger audience, which results in a higher profit to
produce more of the product.
National magazines
3. Regional
Magazines
• Each issue must contain interesting/unique content
• As their target audience is of a regional scale, the magazines must contain
entertaining information related to the area
• May include reviews and interviews linked to the region
Regional magazines
4. Regional magazines
National Magazines Regional Magazines
Wider target audience, aiming to attract
consumers throughout a nation
Smaller target audience, due to the region-themed
content which may not be as flexible as national
targeted content
Can consist of varied content, relating to any area
of the country
Consists of material related to the chosen region
Typically more well-known due to the larger
audiences they reach
Usually less-known due to the smaller audiences
they reach (sold within the region), and due to the
region-specific content.
More opportunities for success due to the
magazine having potential to be bought in multiple
regions
May take longer for recognition due to the smaller
target audience and niche content
Receive greater promotion due to consumers in
different regions purchasing issues
Less promotion, which is focused within the region
it is based on.
5. Differences between a National/Regional magazine coverpage
Overall, the most striking difference I
found between National and Regional
magazines was the appearance/contents
of the coverpages. Although some
regional magazines (such as Cumbria
magazine) contain many coverlines, the
combination of the amount of coverlines
and the content of them struck me when
analysing the Cosmopolitan coverpage. I
managed to categorise the themes of the
coverlines, and by grouping them, I
found it interesting to see the variety of
topics the magazine focused on.
6. Coverpage
analysis
Differences between coverpages
Celebrity-based coverline. (Features quote from the celebrity
featured on the coverpage)
Money/finance- related coverlines. These particular lines would
most likely cater to a middle-class audience. Would likely
interest fans of the Lottery and similar money-making services.
These two coverlines relate to beauty/creating/maintaining an
ideal appearance. The focus on weight, skin and hair suggests
to the audience that the magazine will help improve all of these
features, and by reading it, audiences will find out more.
The focus on love and how to act romantically with a male
suggests the magazine is targeted for single females.
