4. DAM
Definition:
Dam is a solid barrier constructed at a suitable location
across a river valley to store flowing water.
Storage of water is utilized for following objectives:
• Hydropower
• Irrigation
• Water for domestic consumption
• Drought and flood control
• For navigational facilities
• Other additional utilization is to develop fisheries

6. KALABAGH DAM
Kalabagh:
Kalabagh is basically a town and union council of mainwali district in the
punjab province of pakistan.
It is located on the western bank of indus river.
Kalabagh Dam:
The Kalabagh Dam is a proposed hydroelectric dam on the Indus River at
Kalabagh in the Mianwali District of Punjab Province in Pakistan,
It is a typically an embankment dam.
History of Kalabagh Dam:
• 1979 UNDP and world bank contribution
• Dec 2004 pervez musharraf reign
• 2010 worst floods in pakistan

Electricity:
 Installed capacity 2400MW.
 No load shedding .
 Save $4 billion annually for the country.
 Sufficient and cheap electricity.
 Per unit cost (2.5 PKR)

• Absence of Reservoirs 30 million acre foot water wasted.
• Storage Capacity would be available for assured irrigation
supplies throughout the year.
• Better canal system .

14. BENEFITS OF KALABAGH DAM
Flood :
• The recent floods in(2010,2019 etc) Pakistan loss $45 billion.
• Kalabagh would store surplus water in the flood season and make
it available for controlled utilization during the low flow season.
Agriculture sector:
• KPK 6-8 lac acres
• Punjab around 7 lac acres
• Sindh khareef crop
• Balochistan 51k acres
Over all Benefits:
Overall direct benefits = Rs. 20 billion per annum.

On the construction of KBD, various complaints
have been expressed by KPK and Sindh
provinces. Main objections on KBD as follows:

• Nowshehra will get flooded.
• Many people of KPK will be displaced
• The Sewerage system of mardan, swabi and
Nowshera will adversly affect

• Water level decrease.

Facts:
• Desert convert into cultivatable land.
