International Technical Seminar/Workshop “EMS/AHPND: Government, Scientist and Farmer Responses”
22-24 June 2015, Tryp Hotel, Panama City 1
2. Why are we here??
7/24/2017
International Technical Seminar/Workshop “EMS/AHPND:
Government, Scientist and Farmer Responses”
2
+/- 22 government delegates
+/=20 experts
+/=50-60 (?) producers: Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico,
Panama
Different agenda but common interest:
• Share knowledge/experience
• Learn and understand the risks
• Contribute to finding solutions
• Recognize opportunities
• Take actions
• Reach a consensus for cooperation
3. Objectives
7/24/2017 International Technical Seminar/Workshop “EMS/AHPND:
Government, Scientist and Farmer Responses”
3
• Draw generic and specific recommendations and
action packages on priority issues addressed to:
• Competent Authorities, regional and international
inter-governmental organizations
• Farmers/producers/producer groups
• Scientists/experts
4. Process
7/24/2017 International Technical Seminar/Workshop “EMS/AHPND:
Government, Scientist and Farmer Responses”
4
• Participants will be divided into 6 groups (in random order, i.e.
counting 1 to 6, same numbers will belong to 1 group)
• Mix of background for each group
• Everyone will have the chance to comment during the
plenary
• Based on the learnings and knowledge gained in Sessions 1-5
– theoretical, practical, contentious issues, etc. – identify
priority issues which need to be addressed by the 3 sectors
and generate action packages to solve these issues.
• Each of the 6 groups will have a designated
Chairperson/presentor, rapporteur /presentor & presentor;
resource speakers will provide clarification and guidance on
the subject of their expertise

10. What are the core capacities, technical innovations, actions and
public/private sector partnerships needed to support
above actions?
Especially for
countries who
does not yet have
EMS/AHPND?
For countries
already with
EMS/AHPND, how
can the disease be
contained and
prevented from
further spread?

International Technical Seminar/Workshop “EMS/AHPND:
Government, Scientist and Farmer Responses”
13
• Private sector recognize the presence of the disease but
countries not officially reporting. OIE during the last General
Session (May 2015) already included AHPND in the OIE list:
will this encourage transparent reporting?
• What is the role of inbreeding?
• Can shrimp be bred for tolerance and/or resistance?
• Can SPF/SPR stocks solve the problem?
• Are there lessons from WSSV?
• Can we stop illegal movements?
• Government actions on banning shrimp
trade/importation/movements justified?
14. Questions and issues
7/24/2017
International Technical Seminar/Workshop “EMS/AHPND:
Government, Scientist and Farmer Responses”
14
• Will rumours remain as they are – is someone going to
take action?
• Virulence factors? Is there a specific toxin responsible?
Phage or plasmid involved? Stressors from the
environment?
• Precise mechanism of infection? Diagnostics?
• Green water technology, polyculture, immunostimulants,
probotics, quorum sensing, phage therapy, etc.
• Biosecurity for a pathogen that is
ubiquitous in the environment?
