Mother Group is an extra layer of
support to the community’s School
Management Committee (SMC) and
Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) to
support girls’ schooling.
From my experience spanning twelve years,
students who withdrew due to pregnancy, then
re-enrolled appeared:
 somewhat withdrawn during lessons and not
fully and actively participate in lesson activities.
 ‘lost’ in the length of the lesson activities.
 to lack intrinsic motivation to effectively engage
in their academic work.
Our concern in teaching is to ensure that
every student is actively and effectively
engaged in all academic activities.
This inquiry was qualitative; data were
collected through:
 Focus group discussions
 One-to-one in-depth interviews
 Anecdotes in my personal reflective journal
The research focused on individual students’
own lived experiences of challenges they
face and psychosocial support received from
the members of Mother Group.
 Reduced support from parents and guardians
 Feelings of shattered dreams and ambitions
 Difficulty in balancing schooling and motherhood
 Lowered self-esteem due to demeaning
nicknames given to them by fellow students
 covert stigmatization by school mates
Mother Group arranges:
 inspirational talks
 one-on-one counseling sessions
 small focus-group discussions for devolved
platforms of interaction and sharing personal
experiences with the members of Mother
Group
 week-long girls-retreat sessions
Student mothers are helped:
 to strengthen their resilience, reflect on their
mistakes, and unlearn the vices and learn good
behaviours and morals for their fuller academic
engagements; through student mothers having
these experiences, teaching & learning
becomes more lively for every student.
 to re-establish relationships and strengthen
their resilience and ability to cope with difficult
situations.
 to become better at identifying dangerous and
risky situations and better able to excel in life.
Mother Group contributes to building
a lifestyle of empathy, interactivity,
and kindness which ensures that re-
enrolled student-mothers feel
included, inspired, and motivated to
continue learning as before.

How Mother Group Supports Adolescent Mothers.pptx

  • 2. Mother Group is an extra layer of support to the community’s School Management Committee (SMC) and Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) to support girls’ schooling.
  • 3. From my experience spanning twelve years, students who withdrew due to pregnancy, then re-enrolled appeared:  somewhat withdrawn during lessons and not fully and actively participate in lesson activities.  ‘lost’ in the length of the lesson activities.  to lack intrinsic motivation to effectively engage in their academic work. Our concern in teaching is to ensure that every student is actively and effectively engaged in all academic activities.
  • 4. This inquiry was qualitative; data were collected through:  Focus group discussions  One-to-one in-depth interviews  Anecdotes in my personal reflective journal The research focused on individual students’ own lived experiences of challenges they face and psychosocial support received from the members of Mother Group.
  • 5.  Reduced support from parents and guardians  Feelings of shattered dreams and ambitions  Difficulty in balancing schooling and motherhood  Lowered self-esteem due to demeaning nicknames given to them by fellow students  covert stigmatization by school mates
  • 6. Mother Group arranges:  inspirational talks  one-on-one counseling sessions  small focus-group discussions for devolved platforms of interaction and sharing personal experiences with the members of Mother Group  week-long girls-retreat sessions
  • 7. Student mothers are helped:  to strengthen their resilience, reflect on their mistakes, and unlearn the vices and learn good behaviours and morals for their fuller academic engagements; through student mothers having these experiences, teaching & learning becomes more lively for every student.  to re-establish relationships and strengthen their resilience and ability to cope with difficult situations.  to become better at identifying dangerous and risky situations and better able to excel in life.
  • 8. Mother Group contributes to building a lifestyle of empathy, interactivity, and kindness which ensures that re- enrolled student-mothers feel included, inspired, and motivated to continue learning as before.
