Most used:
Close ups - effectively shows emotion or lip syncing. As well as used to cause the
audience to focus on something in particular
Mid shots - shows the importance of multiple things, for example an artist’s face and
the background
Long shots - demonstrates various things and shows the whole background, often
used for establishing shots.

Low-angled shot - portrays strength and power, or demonstrates a character looking
up at something.
High-angled shot - portrays weakness and vulnerability, or demonstrates a character
looking down at something.
Over-the-shoulder shot - used for tracking, interactions or to create a sinister look
Tilted shot - to show a confliction or presenting effects to a character's head (eg.
drugs, alcohol, accidents or a shock)

Most used:
Pan - this is to show a scene or location with steady movement, allowing the
audience to see the location and whole scene without the use of multiple shots.
Tracking - the smooth movement allows the audience to follow something in
particular, a character or an object being shown. Typically used for scenes with
travelling

Most used:
Cuts - the cleanest transition, and used most often for showing different locations,
characters and scenes
Fades - a slow editing effect used in slow paced music videos, it shows a change or
development comparing something with to without something (typically)
Cross-dissolve - a subliminal way to show a passing of time or progression in
character, scenes or location.

Other editing techniques:
Colour filters - most noticeably black & white for the past, flashing for parties, red
for anger or danger and sepia for an old or nostalgic appearance
Slow-motion - used to show something of importance, an action scene or something
falling
Fast-motion - used for showing action (running or a chase) or a party
Rewind - gives meaning to a story, shows connections or things the audience had
not noticed or to show something that could've happened.
9. Mise-en-scene
Most Used:
Natural lighting - the lighting from the sun or moon, it creates a scenic and natural
look, used mostly in pop music videos.
Artificial lighting - relates to dance or hip-hop music videos, usually filmed in a
studio but shows importance of a character or object.
Costumes - represent different characters in a narrative, or used to portray an artist
in a different way, although costumes depend on the genre.
Location - used to set the scene, contributes to the genre of the music video as grime
is usually on the streets.
