Job Description of Duties as General Manager of Nelson Bros. Ready Mix, Ltd.
Position Title: General Manager
Reports to: (Owners)
Reporting to this position: Office, Operations, Sales, Dispatch, Finance, Production,
Maintenance, Human Resources, Billing, IT Directors and Business Managers
Job Summary
As the General Manager I served as chief executive of Nelson Bros. Ready Mix, Ltd. (NBR) and
R&R Trucking, Inc. (R&R), hereto refered to as “The Organization”; and, in partnership with the
Owners, was responsible for the success of said Organization. Together, the Owners and myself
as General Manager, assured the organization’s relevance and viability to the community,
customers, and concrete industry alike; the accomplishment of the organization’s mission and
vision; and the accountability of the organization to its various components.
The Owners delegated responsibility for management and day-to-day operations to the General
Manager, and I had the authority to carry out these responsibilities, in accordance with the
direction and policies established by the Owners. I, as General Manager, provided direction and
enabling to the Owners as they carried out their governance functions.
Accountabilities
1. Legal compliance
a) Assured the filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitored compliance
with relevant laws and regulations.
2. Mission, policy and planning
a) Helped the Owners determine the organization’s values, mission, vision, as well as
short- and long-term goals.
b) Helped the Owners monitor and evaluate the organization’s relevancy and viability to
its customers, its effectiveness, and its results.
c) Kept the Owners fully informed on the condition of the organization and on all the
important factors influencing it. Identified problems and opportunities and addressed
them accordingly; brought those which were appropriate to the Owners and/or the
department heads; and, facilitated discussion and deliberation. Informed the Owners
and the department heads about trends, issues, problems and activities in order to
facilitate policy-making. Recommended policy positions, formulated best practices
protocol, and implemented said policies through training and structure.
d) Kept informed of developments in human resources, ready-mix and Logistics
management and governance, billing, accounting, quality control measures,
production, operations as well as market, and customer development.
3. Management and administration
a) Provided general oversight of all the organizations activities, managed the day-to-day
operations, and assured a smoothly functioning, efficient organization.
b) Assured product quality and organizational stability through development and
implementation of standards and controls, systems and procedures, and regular
evaluation.
c) Assured a work environment that recruits, retains and supports quality staff and
employees. Assured process for selecting, development, motivating, and evaluating
staff and employees.
d) Recommended staffing and financing to the Owners. In accordance with Owners
action, recruits personnel, negotiates professional contracts, and sees that
appropriate salary structures are developed and maintained.
e) Specified accountabilities for management personnel (whether salaried or hourly)
and evaluated performance regularly.
4. Governance
a) Helped the Owners articulate their own role and accountabilities and that of the
department heads as well as individual employees, and helped evaluate performance
regularly.
b) Worked with the Owner / President to enable the Owners to fulfill their governance
functions and facilitated the optimum performance by the Owners, each
departments and individual employees.
c) With the Owner / President, focused Owners attention on long-range strategic issues.
d) Managed the Owner’s due diligence process to assure timely attention to core issues.
e) Worked with the Owners and Department heads to get the best thinking and
involvement of each member and to stimulate each member to give his or her best.
f) Recommended outside consulting to participate with the Owners and the various
departments.
5. Financing
a) Promoted programs (OSHA Training, Sales Training, QC Training, HR Training,
Management Training), services and products that are produced in a cost-effective
manner, employing economy while maintaining an acceptable level of quality.
b) Oversaw the fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting and
audit.
c) Worked with Owners and Accounting to ensure financing to support short- and long-
term goals.
d) Assured an effective sales development program by serving as the chief development
officer or hiring and supervising an individual responsible for this activity.
1) Helped guide and enable the Owners, and the sales development team(s) to
participate actively in the sales development process.
2) Helped the Owners and the development team design, implement and monitor a
viable sales plan, policies and procedures.
3) Participated actively in identifying, cultivating and soliciting customer prospects.
4) Assured the availability of materials to support demand generated.
5) Assured the development and operation of sales management systems and reports
for quality decision-making.
6. Community and Customer Relations
a) Facilitated the integration of the organization into the fabric of the community and
industry by using effective marketing and communications activities.
b) Acted as an advocate, within the public and private sectors, for issues relevant to the
organization, its services and customers.
c) Listened to customers, employees, vendors and the community in order to improve
services and generate a positive image within the industry and community. Assured
community and customer awareness of the organization’s response to community and
customer needs.
d) Served as chief spokesperson for the organization, assuring proper representation of the
organization within the industry and the community alike.
e) Initiated, developed, and maintained cooperative relationships with key customers,
vendors, and political bodies (City Counsel).
f) Worked with legislators, regulatory agencies, volunteers and representatives of the
industry sector to promote legislative and regulatory policies that encourage a healthy
ready-mix industry and address the issues of the organization’s interests.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
• This was a high-stress position based on full responsibility for the organization. I handled
detailed, complex concepts and problems, balanced multiple tasks simultaneously, and
made rapid decisions regarding administrative issues.
• I planned and implemented programs. Established strong and appropriate relationships
with Owners, employees, staff, vendors, customers, regulatory agencies, and city
representatives.
• I developed smooth and constructive relationships with executive colleagues, outside
agencies, organizations and individuals.
• I planned and met deadlines. It was required of me to maintain a flexible work schedule
to meet the demands of executive management. The hours were typically long and
irregular.
I conveyed a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the organization and the
ready-mix and logistic sectors alike. I further demonstrated commitment to continued
professional growth and development by attending seminars, conventions, and association
meetings.
Qualifications:
I have a Bachelor’s Degree, which was not required, and have over 10 years experience in
senior management positions. As General Manager, I demonstrated critical competencies in
four broad categories: commitment to results, business savvy, leading change, and motivating.
Commitment to results: As a General Manager I am a systems thinker who is customer focused
and goal driven. I identify relevant information and help transform this information into
individual and organizational knowledge and learning. I am action oriented and innovative. I
have the ability to translated broad goals into achievable steps. I anticipate and solve problems
and take advantage of opportunities, provided they are ethical, moral and legal. I am a self-
starter and a team player.
Business savvy: As the organization’s leader, I possess knowledge of and experience in
management and administration. I have demonstrated experience in integrating and
coordinating diverse areas of management.
• I have knowledge in the following areas: human resources, finance and personnel;
oral and written communications; planning and evaluation; and governance
(TXDOT, OSHA, and FMCSA).
• I have 15 years experience in the field of Ready-Mix Operations, Quality Control,
Maintenance and governance. Community and customer relations is also an area I
excel in.
• I have a working knowledge of sales development and successfully increased sales
from 150,000 cubic yards per year to 300,000 cubic yards per year. I have a high
level of personal skills and can make formal, persuasive presentations to groups
and I deal effectively with people from all segments of the community and
industry.
• I am comfortable with diversity and respectful of a wide range of faiths, beliefs and
experiences.
Leading change: As the General Manager I possess the skills and implement the functions of a
leader. I understand and share the organization’s values, mission and vision. I consistently
displays integrity, model behavior, develop people, and build teams. I am an individual that
