SPECIAL NEWS The European Central Bank cut its benchmark key interest rates by 0.1% percentage points as a weakening economy and falling prices prompted a dovish response from the central bank. The refinancing rate was lowered to 0.05%, the marginal lending rate to 0.3%and the rate on the de- posit facility to negative 0.2%. The ECB made no reference in its rate announcement to other policy measures like the QE- which many observers expected. Data released on last Friday showed inflation in the euro zone slipped to a fresh five-year low of 0.3% in August, well below the ECB's tar- get danger zone of 1%.
The Bank of England kept its interest rate unchanged at a historic-low and quantitative easing at GBP 375 billion. At the two-day meeting, the nine-member Monetary Policy Committee governed by Mark Carney voted to maintain the key bank rate at 0.50 percent. The rate has been at the current 0.50 percent since March 2009.
COMMODITY BUZZ MCX Gold futures managed to hold steady amid a thin movement in the global prices. The shiny metal extended its losses this week after being unable to hold near the key $1300per ounce levels last week. COMEX Gold slipped amid positive US economic data releases and strength in the US dollar and bottomed out near $1260 per ounce mark- its two and half month low. However, some buying is emerged in Asian trades today amid a wobbly move- ment inequities. The metal is currently trading at $1273 per ounce, up $3 per ounce on the day.MCX Gold futures are trading at Rs 27524 per 10 grams, down Rs 46 per 10 grams on the day. The counter tested a low of Rs 27368 per 10 grams in last session. South African mining group Africa Rainbow Minerals (ARM) noted today that volatility in currencies and com- modity prices continued in the financial year with most commodities facing supply related headwinds. There was a sharp decline in iron ore and manganese ore prices in the third quarter of the financial year. The company noted that high quality iron ore and manganese ore which even in the currently challenging market remains in strong demand.
