The European Central Bank (ECB) should immediately cut
its benchmark interest rate, and may even then have to
take additional measures to end a period of too low infla-
tion in the euro zone, the Organization for Economic Co-
operation and Development said Tuesday. In its twice-
yearly Economic Outlook report, the research body once
again lowered its forecast for global economic growth;
since it now expects a number of large developing econo-
mies to be more sluggish than it anticipated when it last
published projections in November.
The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic
Analysis, through the Department of Commerce, an-
nounced today that total March exports of $193.9 billion
and imports of $234.3 billion resulted in a goods and ser-
vices deficit of $40.4 billion, down from $41.9 billion in
February, revised. March exports were $3.9 billion more
than February exports of $190.0 billion. March imports
were $2.5 billion more than February imports of $231.8 bil-
lion
COMMODITY BUZZ
MCX Gold futures witnessed some buying support but
stayed under stress as the global prices failed to extend
their latest rise. COMEX Gold futures had surged to their
three-week high earlier in the week amid intense fighting
in Ukraine, which boosted the yellow metal's safe-haven
demand. However, calm trades were seen today and the
metal is quoting at $1307.40 per ounce, down $1.90 per
ounce on the day. The MCX Gold futures are trading at Rs
28866 per 10 grams, down Rs 69 per 10 grams or 0.24% on
the day with 7.21% increase in the open interest.
Gold recorded strong gains earlier in the week as the con-
flict between the govt and pro-Russian separatists grew
more widespread in Ukraine over the weekend and the
weak US dollar prompted rally in the yellow metal yester-
day. The metal also gained on weak China data. China's
HSBC manufacturing purchasing managers' index came in
at 48.1 April, down from a preliminary estimate of 48.3
and missing forecasts for an uptick to 48.4. A reading be-
low 50 indicates a contraction.
