GamesSense
Because making children wait in line to use one ball is like giving a
class one pen and expecting them to learn to write
- ( Pill, 2013)
What is a
Games
Sense
approach?
Games sense is a strategy that involves teachers assisting in
your child Physical Education development through the use of
modified games, guided discovery and inquiry based learning.
This means that rather than having children stand in lines
doing drill after drill to learn a technique, they take part in
games which help them learn a variety of skills along with the
initial technique.
-(Pill, 2016).

It involves students taking part in games where everyone is
participating. Rules are modified or gradually changed from
traditional rules so that players are focusing on particular parts and
skills involved in the sport.
The teacher does not stand there and give instruction after
instruction during this approach, but rather acts as a facilitator to
children’s learning .

WhyGamesSense ?
Games Sense:
• creates a positive attitude towards sport
• contributes to your child's physical, social, moral and
personal growth
• is used to suit the developmental, emotional and social
needs of your child
• allows your child to develop independence on the
sporting field

“Games sense provides a very
effective means of
developing better athletes
whiledeveloping better
people” (Light,2013)
Rationale
Games Sense is the best approach in our children’s physical
education because it contributes to development in so many
areas of their wellbeing without inhibiting the learning of
essential skills.
In this approach there is less focus on competition and
comparison because the children are so engaged in what they
are doing. In school groups there are varying abilities and
interests for physical education. Games Sense allows for all
these groups to be catered for.
Children become so engaged in what they are doing within
their groups that they do not worry about others. This means
that your child is more likely to participate because they are
not worried about what others are thinking or doing.

N_bodybuilder_girl.jpg
It is inclusive of all ability groups and has been found to uplift
the motivation and interest of even the most resistant
children. This is because Games Sense provides opportunities
for success for all ability levels. These can be as obvious as
scoring a goal in a game of soccer, or as simple correctly
completing an overarm throw to pass the ball.
Motivation and interest is highly important in your child’s
physical education and throughout life. Students who enjoy
and feel success in physical activity are more likely to partake
in the future. This leads to an overall healthier life.
Furthermore, students learn to develop and succeed in sports
with out needing to rely on off-the-field sources such as
teachers or coaches.
