Narrative Structure:
My story has a linear structure as it starts at the beginning and follows through
in order to the end and doesn’t contain any flashbacks or flash forwards like a
non linear structure would, an example of a non linear storyline is films like Pulp
Fiction as the start isn’t actually the start and the storyline flashes to the past and
forward. In my book it has a closed story as there is conclusion to the story and
closes the book without any chance of it carrying on like in a soap opera where
the storylines continue week after week my book concludes so that there is a
moral for young children to learn from. My book features a single strand
storyline as it has one main focus on the bear and the monkey I think by having it
as a single strand story keeps it simple for the younger readers so there isn’t too
much for them to focus on, however there are many films and books that contain
a multi strand storylines so that there is more chance of a sequel or multiple
storylines within one. Within my book it has an anti-realist storyline as the
events that happen in it are highly unlikely to actually happen in the real world
which is much like any film within the fantasy and sci-fi genre whereas a realist
storyline would be something more like Coronation Street or Eastenders, I think
that by having my story with an anti-realist storyline it makes more interesting
for children to read so it lets them use their imagination more.
Components-
Opening- The beginning of the story when characters and the storyline is
introduced (When the two monkeys talk about selling the bananas to be able to
have more money)
Conflict- The main event in the storyline (where the bananas are traded for the
seeds and the large palm tree is grown, so Jack attempts to climb it)
Resolution- The ending of the story (Jack and the bear resolve their issues and
learn to share)
Enigma- The puzzle or something that is to be solved
Climax- A turning point which changes a characters fate and leads to the ending
(When the bear chase Jack down the tree but end up resolving the issues and
learning to share.)
