Companies
• The Book of Eli is a 2010 American post-apocalyptic neo-Western and action film
directed by the Hughes brothers, written by Gary Whitta, and starring Denzel
Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, and Jennifer Beals. The story
revolves around Eli, a nomad in a post-apocalyptic world, who is told by a voice to
deliver his copy of a mysterious book to a safe location on the West Coast of the United
States. The history of the post-war world is explained along the way, as is the
importance of Eli's task. Filming began in February 2009 and took place in New Mexico.
• Alcon Entertainment strives to consistently and profitably entertain a worldwide
audience while exploring new ways to innovatively finance, produce, market, and
distribute entertainment that challenges, inspires, & delights both its creators and its
audience.
• Silver Pictures is the film production company of Joel Silver founded in 1985. However,
it did not have a logo until 1990 (introduced as a static logo for "Silver Pictures
Television" on the 1990 TV movie Parker Kane), and their logo did not appear on a
theatrical film until 1991 (introduced on the film Ricochet).
3. The Road (Film) Production
Companies
• The Road is a 2009 American post-apocalyptic drama film directed by John Hillcoat from a screenplay
written by Joe Penhall, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2006 novel of the same name by the American
author Cormac McCarthy. Principal photography took place in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, West Virginia, and
Oregon. The film stars Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as a father and his son in a post-
apocalyptic wasteland attempting to make it to the coast.
• Dimension Films is an American film production and distribution studio formerly owned by The Walt
Disney Studios and now owned by The Weinstein Company. It was formerly used as Bob Weinstein's label
within Miramax Films, to produce and release genre films. The Weinstein Brothers took this label with
them when they departed the Disney-owned Miramax in October 2005 and paired it under their
company, The Weinstein Company. It is one of the American "mini-majors", i.e. small to medium
independent television and motion picture production studios.
• In 2003, entrepreneurs Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban founded 2929 Productions to develop, finance and
produce independent feature films outside of the Hollywood studio system. In its first few years, 2929
Productions produced such films as “Godsend,” “Criminal” and “The Jacket.” The goal of 2929 Productions
is to develop and selectively finance and produce interesting and thought-provoking feature films for both
specialized and mainstream audiences.
4. Reflection
• As the genre I have chosen has a very niche market regarding
theme, there is not much research that can be done as the topic
area is so specific. However, I can see that the most suitable studio
for producing my product would be 29 29 Productions or Stage 29
Productions. This is due to the fact that it is a specialist production
company who’s ethos is “To develop and selectively finance and
produce interesting and thought-provoking feature films for both
specialized and mainstream audiences”
• Thus this company would be well suited to my theme as they focus
on producing films not for their economic value, but for the value of
the idea and film itself. This allows me to produce the story and
emotion rollercoaster I intended with the strong backing of a
company who appreciate the innovation the film will bring to the
genre.
5. The Last Of Us (Game)
Production Company
• The Last of Us is an action-adventure survival horror video game developed by
Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was
released for the PlayStation 3 in June 2013. An updated version, The Last of Us
Remastered, was released for the PlayStation 4 in July 2014. In the game,
players control Joel, a man tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie
across a post-apocalyptic United States.
• Naughty Dog Inc. (formerly Jam Software before renaming in 1989) is an
American video game developer based in Santa Monica, California. Founded
by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin in 1984 as an independent developer, the
studio was acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2001. Gavin and
Rubin produced a sequence of progressively more successful games, including
Rings of Power and Way of the Warrior in the early 1990s. The latter – a very
low-budget but still plausible offering – prompted Universal Interactive
Studios to sign the duo to a three-title contract and fund the expansion of the
company.
6. Further Reflection
• After finding a movie studio (29 29 Productions or Stage 29 Productions)
to aid in the production of my film/movie I observed further studios in
different parts of the vast media world.
• Naughty Dog studios is the company responsible for the game The Last Of
Us which has been critically acclaimed to be one of the best games of all
time. This game has heavily influenced the style of film I wish to portray
on the big screen. This, although not a film institution, is worth
recognising for their contribution to the genre.
