The document discusses what the author learned about technologies through creating a media product. They developed skills in Photoshop, learning tools like the spot healing brush and magic wand. They also used YouTube tutorials to further their Photoshop skills. The author gained experience with photography equipment and editing software. Additionally, they used Blogger to present research and Slideshare to upload files. The author reflects that their preliminary product looks basic compared to the final product, as they lacked Photoshop skills and knowledge of magazine conventions initially but gained these through research.
Learning Technologies and Skills for Media Projects
1. Foundation Portfolio Evaluation – Question 6 and 7
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
After constructing this media product, I have developed many skills using different kinds of
technologies and programmes on the computer which I will be able to use in the future for
other media projects. Firstly Photoshop, at the beginning of this project I really struggled
with Photoshop and only had basic skills which I had obtained from GCSE art so it was a
learning curve for me as I moved through the making of my media product. However, now I
am able to confidently use Photoshop well and I enjoy experimenting with the different
tools and methods on it, I have discovered some new tools which I have found really useful
to use, for example the spot blemish tool and the magic wand tool. As well as using and
developing my skills on Photoshop to create my
media product, I also used YouTube to watch
videos as guidance and tips to even further my
knowledge on Photoshop, such as removing the
background from a picture and the easiest way
to do so. Other technologies I have developed in
include photography! I wanted all the
photographs within my magazine cover, contents
page and double page spread to look as
professional and realistic as possible so in order to do so I used a professional photography
camera from school, as well as this I used an editing programme on the computer to edit my
photographs.
As part of this project I have also used Blogger.com and Slideshare. I created a blog on the
website blogger to present all of my research and work leading up to my final products, I
found this programme very easy to use and I think it is a really practical way to present
work. The programme Slideshare allows me to upload my work onto blogger for files such as
Microsoft word, PowerPoint or Prezi. Prezi is another programme I used to display some of
my evaluation of my products, Prezi is similar to PowerPoint but it allows you to be more
creative and individual with your work.

2. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel have you learnt in the progression
from it to the final product?
Looking back on my preliminary task I have come to the realisation of how basic and
unprofessional it looks since having created my final product. When I created my
Preliminary product, I lacked most of the skills in Photoshop which I now have and so when I
was creating this I was trying things out for the first time and just hoping they would work.
However, now I have learnt the codes and conventions of a magazine in order to keep it
professional and worthy as well as this I have acquired many new skills on Photoshop which
allow me to do more with my magazine compared to my preliminary magazine cover. The
layout of my magazine is more appropriate now and is more realistic to a real magazine; the
mis – en –scene is overall more modern, cutting-edge and relevant to my magazine. Also,
the fact that I have chosen a colour scheme which I have continued with throughout my
three piece project makes my magazine look more sophisticated and stylish – more
attractive to my target audience. Moreover, even my photography in my final product is
more professional looking and is of a much higher quality in comparison to my original
preliminary cover. Previously, when I completed my preliminary task I did not accomplish
any research or planning into the top of school magazines therefore I had a lack of
knowledge and information on the codes and conventions of these types of magazines and
so my preliminary product could not have been as high quality as my music magazine.
However, as a class we looked at previous and existing school magazines to give us an idea
of what they look like and the content you would find inside a school magazine so this gave
us a basic structure before we were to start creating it. The research and planning I carried
out before my music magazine was so in depth and detailed that I knew exactly how my
magazine needed to be done and what to include, I thoroughly understood the codes and
conventions of my magazine and therefore I was able to make my products as genuine and
of good quality as possible.
