From The Inside Out Slides, 1/16/11
1.
2. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not
gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of
the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of
the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are
opposed to each other, to keep you from doing
the things you want to do. But if you are led by
the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the
works of the flesh are evident: sexual
immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry,
sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger,
rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy,
drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
3. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those
who do such things will not inherit the
kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against
such things there is no law. And those who
belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh
with its passions and desires. If we live by the
Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not
become conceited, provoking one another,
envying one another.
Galatians 5:16-26 (ESV)
4. For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm
therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of
slavery. Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept
circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you.
I testify again to every man who accepts
circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole
law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be
justified by the law; you have fallen away from
grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves
eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in
Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor
uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith
working through love. Galatians 5:1-6 (ESV)
6. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and
cumin, and have neglected the weightier
matters of the law: justice and mercy and
faithfulness. These you ought to have done,
without neglecting the others. You blind
guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a
camel!
7. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you clean the outside of
the cup and the plate, but inside they are
full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind
Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup
and the plate, that the outside also may be
clean.
8. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed
tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful,
but within are full of dead people’s bones
and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly
appear righteous to others, but within you
are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
9. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you build the tombs of the prophets and
decorate the monuments of the righteous,
saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers,
we would not have taken part with them in
shedding the blood of the prophets.‘ Thus you
witness against yourselves that you are sons of
those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then,
the measure of your fathers. You serpents, you
brood of vipers, how are you to escape being
sentenced to hell?
Matthew 23:23-33 (ESV)
10. "You're blessed when you get your inside
world—your mind and heart—put right.
Then you can see God in the outside
world.
Matthew 5:8 (The Message)
11. So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take
your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating,
going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it
before God as an offering. Embracing what God does
for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't
become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit
into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention
on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily
recognize what he wants from you, and quickly
respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always
dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God
brings the best out of you, develops well-formed
maturity in you.
Romans 12:1-2 (The Message)
