1. CHAPTER 4
OVERALL GAIN FROM THE INTERNSHIP STAY TIME
Before starting my internship program, I expected both theoretical and practical knowledge; but
after completing my internship program I got additional knowledge beyond my expectation; they
are described in the following sections one by one. The knowledges I got are closely related to the
courses we learned in the last 4 years of the university duration.
4.1 Benefits gained in terms of theoretical skills
Sometimes it is apparent to find real life existence of things in technology area to be different from
what is said about them in paper. To overcome these kinds of contradictions we must read more
and upgrade ourselves to higher level knowledge and compromise with it. Since technology is
advancing more than before, always we shouldn’t limit our knowledge and know-how to what we
have already known or learned. Therefore, we have been proposed to read some materials and dig
more knowledge from internet on topics which are related to what we are working on and the
components we are observing. Generally, by reading the materials some theoretical skills are
gained. What works today may get obsolete and not work by tomorrow, therefore we must move
forth with new technology, hence upgrade our theoretical knowledge with new discoveries and
innovations. By the same rule of thumb, I have always been trying to upgrade or update my
knowledge around areas of networking and Information Technology, as it is my nature to be
curious.
4.2 Benefits gained in terms of the Practical skill
It is clear and unquestionable that good practical skills are expected from an engineer. In my
internship stay I have gained good practical skills in installing and troubleshooting networking
equipment’s such as switch and physical RJ-45 connector sockets. In fact, I have also gained some
concrete knowledge on crimping networking cables for realizing virtual LAN networks.
In addition to that I have got tangible knowledge on how to mount networking racks and installing
components and gained know how of designing virtualization lab for any client and how to manage
the system. Configuring and mounting of CCTV camera is also the area I have been working on.
Finally, during my internship stay at IPCOMtechnologies I have got a chance to work with experts
from Dell company like Mr. Jeremiah Ngure where he shared his knowledge and experience for
us and taught us practical lesson on VDI technology. We were also given training on the overall
operation of the virtualization lab technology.
4.3 Benefits gained in terms of interpersonal communication and team playing skill
Working in group with my fellow friends and company’s employees was great opportunity to
develop my communication skill. During the working hours we spent good time together on
solving different working issues by sharing different ideas to tackle the same problem as it has
been said, “many eyes see much deeper than single”. And as a team member I have contributed
my part by giving ideas at project sites where we have been working on. The employees in the
2. company were young’s; that gave me a good opportunity to play more with them, but it doesn’t
mean to say that its difficult to play with others. So, our team playing skills are increased highly
and I became more sociable than before. Now, I can work anywhere with any one.
Generally, this internship helped me to improve team playing skills which helped me for my future
career life.
4.4 Benefits gained in terms leadership skill
Understanding the needs and characteristics of the post: A leader should understand the needs and
characteristics of each participant of the group. This helps the leader to deal with each person as
an individual, to treat that individual with respect, and to help the person grow.
Knowing and using the resources of the group: Resources include all those things necessary to do
a job. Resources also include people, because people have knowledge and skills. Knowledge is
what a person learns through familiarity or experience-what you know. Skill is the ability to use
what you know. Attitude includes the desire to do something-motivation-and the belief that you
can do it-confidence. There are different elements of leadership skills I considered during my
working days.
Communicating: To improve your skills in getting information, pay attention and listen carefully,
make notes and sketches, and Ask questions and repeat your understanding of what was said. To
improve your skills in giving information, be sure others are listening before you speak, speak
slowly and clearly, draw diagrams, if needed. Ask that receiving information to take notes, and
Have the listeners repeat their understanding of what was said. Encourage questions.
Planning: Planning is an important part of everything we do. The following is a simple process for
Planning, Consider the task and objectives, Consider the resources-equipment, knowledge, skills,
and attitudes, Consider the alternatives, reach a decision, evaluating each option, Write the plan
down and review it with the post, Execute the plan, and Evaluate the plan.
Controlling group performance: A group needs control as an engine needs a throttle-to keep it from
running itself into the ground. A group works together best when everybody is headed in the same
direction. If a plan is to be properly carried out, someone must lead the effort. Control is a function
that the group assigns to the leader to get the job done. Control happens as a result of recognizing
the difference between where the group is and where the group is going. The leader is responsible
for developing a plan to help the group get to its goal.
3. Evaluating: helps measure the performance of a group in getting a job done and working together.
It suggests ways in which the group can improve its performance.
Setting the example: It is the most effective way to show others the proper way to conduct
themselves and is even more effective than verbal communication. Without this skill, all the other
skills will be useless. One way to think about setting the example is to imagine yourself as part of
a group and think about how you would like your leader to act.
Counseling: is important, to help people solve problems, to encourage or reassure, and To help an
worker reach his or her potential
Effective teaching: is a process to increase the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the group and its
participants. The focus is on learning, not teaching. For teaching to be effective, learning must take
place. The steps of effective teaching include, choosing the learning objectives, providing a
discovery experience that helps the learner understand the need for the skill, Demonstrating or
explaining the skill, allowing the learner to practice the skill, and Evaluating the process.
In terms of leadership skill, I have gained the administrative group as a matured and aged people.
Due to that we have attend not only the practical learning but also their managerial experienced
skill. Their way of leadership helped me to cope-up with both the theory and experience I had and
what they gave me. Their leadership skill helps the employees of the company to be hard workers
and able to do their works perfectly which have much influence on my leadership skill too.
Generally, the leadership skill we have gained would be very helpful in Electrical and Computer
Engineering, specialized in Communication stream.
4.5 Work ethics related issue
All workers at IPCOM whether at office or at site they have great motivation to do every task
appointed to them. They don’t seem as a hired individual they work as if the company belongs to
them. As we all know every profession has its own work ethics to be more productive and
successful. One thing I learned from them is to read and work day and night. And one thing I will
never forget is the day we have worked the whole day and whole night without sleeping at zemen
bank. All employees think for each other, respect the work time, Know their duties and right. In
my internship duration I got many advantages relating work ethics, which have a big value for my
future if we will be an employee in any company. Some of the work ethics related advantages we
have gained are:
Attendance - Attendance and punctuality often have a large impact on individual and team success.
Tardiness or absenteeism can also profoundly impact job performance and retention.
4. Character - An employer expects employees to work together toward achieving the objectives of
the company. The wise employee who is interested in having a good relationship with an employer
will try to help the employer achieve success. Thus, employer expects employees to develop
certain desirable traits that will help them to perform their jobs well so that the company can
succeed. Some of these traits include the following: Loyalty, Honesty, Trustworthiness,
Dependability, Reliability, Initiative, Self-discipline, and Self-responsibility.
Teamwork - It is vital that employees work as a team. It is important not only to their personal
success and advancement, but also to that of their co-workers and to the company.
Appearance - A person makes their first impression of someone in three seconds. If you appear
unkempt and wrinkled, someone is going to think that you do sloppy work. If you dress as a
professional, your first impression will be excellent.
Attitude - It is very important to demonstrate a positive attitude, appear self-confident, and have
realistic expectations for self. Developing and maintaining a positive attitude involves setting
realistic expectations for ourselves at school and at work. These goals should be challenging, but
obtainable.
Productivity - To be a productive student and employee, a person must follow safety procedures,
conserve materials, keep the work area neat and clean and follow directions properly.
Organizational skills - Employers consider effective time management and organizational skills as
good work habits. To begin managing wisely the time you spend at work, to prepare for
assignments at home, and to manage your life at home and work simultaneously, you need to know
and to put into practice some good time management techniques.
Communication - Is how we interact with each other. Communication whether it is verbal or
nonverbal must be clear, to the point, empathetic, and one must keep in mind that we must always
treat others as we would like others to treat us.
Cooperation - involves developing good working relationships, following the chain of command,
good at conflict management, and being a good problem solver.
Respect – it cannot be emphasized enough that every working relationship from the top to the
bottom of the chain of command is based on respect. Respect your subordinates as you do your
superiors. and I greatly understand work ethics skills is important on electrical engineering
application area.
4.6 Entrepreneurship skill
Currently, our government policy is giving more focus on young entrepreneurs to create their own
job rather than just being hired. But there is still a gap between the theoretical knowledge and the
industrial requirement. During my stay at the company I have built a confidence on starting up my
own company creating new things usable by the society and profitable for the company.
