“The big difference between human happiness and sadness? Thirty-seven
freakin’ vibrations.” -Michael Tilson Thomas
3. Michael Tilson Thomas is a music conductor, composer, and
musician. He is currently the music director of the San
Francisco Symphony, and the artistic director of the New
World Symphony Orchestra.
4. Mr. Thomas began his introduction with a personal story
relating to how his father’s name was Ted, and then uses
him as a segue to begin speaking about the history of
music.
5. Michael kept the audience interested and focused by using
a piano to play certain songs that were relative to the era
he was speaking of, and used a clear verbal expression of
his thoughts and opinions.
6. I think the best TED Commandment that Michael portrayed was the 2nd
Commandment -- “Show us the real you”. He related to his personal life often, and
how the topic he was speaking about affected him on both a personal and
professional level. I also like that considering he is very successful in his field, he
followed the 5th Commandment (“Don’t flaunt your ego”) and never bragged or
belittled anyone in the crowd that was less knowledgeable on the topic.
7. I would rate Michael a 4 out of 5 in terms of dynamism. He
was extremely well spoken with a clear delivery, and also
very knowledgeable of the topic. The only thing I wish he
did more of was interact and include the crowd in some
way.
8. My favorite tip that Mr. Thomas followed from Garr/
Reynolds was that he left the crowd more knowledgeable
of the topic. I learned plenty more about the subject only
watching it via the internet, so I can imagine if would have
been a fantastic performance to see.
9. I learned how important a clear delivery of your speech
both vocally and physically, with good body language, can
make for a great base for an amateur presenter to be
accepted by the audience.
10. Sir Ken Robinson may be the best speaker I have ever
seen. He is excellent at covering the TED Commandments,
had great body language, engages the audience with humor
and fact, and has a clear presentation.
11. VS.
In Sir Ken’s speeches, he spoke about improving our
schooling and society as a whole. It focused on a wider
audience, opposed to Michael’s speech which pertained
mostly to the history of music - where it started, and
where it’s going.
12. My tips for fellow classmates in their future
endeavors...
13. First off, for the rest of this month, considering we are an
online class, please remember that as uncomfortable as it
may be, look into the camera. It makes it much more
personal to watch and keep the viewer interested.
14. Secondly, try to incorporate personal stories into the
subject you are talking about. Relating personal things that
coincide with your topic is one of my favorite parts of a
speech. It makes me look at the presenter in a different
way, and makes me reflect on possibly how the topic you
are discussing has affected me.
15. Lastly, please have some fun! Someone who doesn’t even
look like they’re interested in what they are talking about,
immediately puts me into zone-out mode. If you can enjoy
yourself, be knowledgeable about the topic, and have a
good delivery, I can guarantee that someone who is
watching could change they’re perspective on the topic,
because of you!
