Introduction
Learning e-volution…! Will you be part of it?
The aim of this booklet compilation is to offer ESL Teachers some insight
into a variety of available on line resources they can visit for input. We
are lucky to have an endless ‘library’ of data that can offer the
information we occasionally look for in order to enhance our personal
development as teachers at any time we feel like it! So easy, so fast, so
effective…however we might feel overwhelmed by the countless sites out
there…therefore, an effort is made here to present a limited number
that have been tried out and work miracles for us.
It is all a matter of perspective and need one has at the time of
interaction with the resource. The way the new input will be used to
promote our understanding of an issue or to enhance our teaching is
directly proportional to the personality and needs of each teacher at a
specific moment and therefore the learning outcome may generate
innumerable representations and applications. Our utmost concern
remains to improve our students’ engagement and performance in a
pleasant learning environment for all parties involved; an environment
close or even within the reality of our students…which today is the web.
Many teachers have already given into this new digital world and the vast
options it offers for communication, learning, teaching, doing business,
conducting research etc., …why not use it to both enjoy teaching and
excel professionally?!
Through your active online involvement you will definitely gain insight into
the learning habits of modern students, better restructure your lesson
planning to engage and advance students and integrate social media and
other e-learning tools in your teaching.

It is advisable to visit the links below for hands-on experience in order to
explore and exploit the options offered. Some links may provide you with
info or ideas to incorporate in your teaching (e.g. develop activities for
one or more of the 4 learning skills) that will benefit your students, while
others might enhance your understanding of issues or lead to further
research and promote new learning experiences and even create
opportunities for live interaction or cooperation with other participants in
activities globally!
Through your network ‘journey’, media literacy skills will gradually
advance and you will become a confidently expert net-surfer who will be
able to integrate digital tools in your teaching practice and your personal
lifestyle as well…
The following are just a stepping stone to the broad galaxy of learning
opportunities on the web!
2. Suggestions for Professional Development through
the web
Just a few years ago, teachers seeking ideas and resources for
professional development had to resort to related publications (books,
journals, articles etc.), or In Service sessions, Conferences, Seminars,
Teacher Trainers or older experienced Colleagues! Most of these
required payment and were limited. Nowadays, however, teachers
interested in upgrading their pedagogical approaches to teaching and
wishing to implement innovative methodologies in their class to motivate
and promote their students’ learning, thanks to the internet, can do so
easily. Access is unrestricted and free while resources innumerable on a

variety of sites. All that teachers need is time, access to internet and an
inner drive to advance in their profession.
Sites teachers may visit are endless. It is pretty easy to use a browser
like Google, Yahoo or others and type the key words for your search in
the blank box with the cursor. Hundreds of options will appear with
resources you need to look through and choose from what you feel better
meets your requirements on each occasion.

The Web 2.0 tools are applications designed to be used online for
various purposes and can reinforce the teaching and learning of all
language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The options are
endless, depending on teachers’ creativity and imagination and the e-tools
are countless, with new ones appearing daily! Don’t get frustrated trying
to learn about them all and how they are used… whichever tool you
manage to learn, it will do the job. Your students can always benefit from
limited e-tools, provided they are used effectively to enhance learning.
v. Internet Safety
It is good for teachers, parents and students to learn to ‘surf’ the net
safely and make the learning experience exciting but not hazardous.
There are many risks one needs to be aware of and know how to avoid and
be protected.

You just received your student’s work. How sure are you it is his/her
work? To what extent has the student used original ideas and
expressions? You can easily find out and assess your student’s work in a
fair way while teaching students to be fair themselves!

There are many more e-tools to find and explore…just ‘Google’ what you
are looking for!
Finally, however, try not to procrastinate a lot, as …..the internet is a big
temptation and distraction when not handled with care….
