HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SPILLS
SPILL TYPE: INCIDENTALSPILLS
Definition:
Do not pose a significant health/safety hazard to the employee or others involved.
Do not have the potential to become an emergency in a short time frame.
Are of limited quantity, exposure potential or toxicity
Can readily be cleaned up by the personnel present
Procedure:
Mark the spill area and notify the department manager or designee.
Evacuate the immediate area of patients, visitors and staff, as necessary.
Don the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Cleanup is performed by department staff involved with the spill.
Apply special neutralizing agents as required and/or use specialty spill kits. Follow directions provided with
kits.
Dispose of hazardous material, spill kit, and other contaminated materials in appropriate waste stream.
SPILL TYPE: EMERGENCYSPILLS
Definition:
Cannot be contained and cleaned up by the employee working with the material
Could result in the release of flammable gases, liquids, or vapors that create a fire or explosion hazard
Could result in the release of toxic gases, fumes, solid, or liquids that could create an unsafe condition
Procedure:
Mark the spill area and notify the department manager or designee.
Evacuate the immediate area of patients, visitors, and staff, as necessary.
Notify Plant Engineering to call in outside contractor to handle the spill.

* Chemo spill kit and contaminated PPE are placed in a chemo disposal bag and placed in a chemotherapeutic
waste container the department or in Pharmacy. Linens and non-disposable cleaning supplies are placed in the
regular laundry.
DOCUMENTATION
Complete the following forms as appropriate to the incident:
1. Hazardous Materials Spill/Release/Exposure Incident Report for any spill
2. Unusual Occurrence Report if a patient or visitor is involved
3. Employee Accident Report if a staff member is contaminated
