Bethesda Health hospitals in Greater West Palm Beach, Florida,
have found the winning combination of cutting-edge technology,
strong leadership, and a culture of teamwork to attract top sur-
geons, clinicians, and nursing leaders. New job openings mean a se-
lect group of perioperative nurses can be a part of this rewarding
care environment.
BUILDING A CULTURE OF CARING
“Success in today’s perioperative setting can only happen if we are
truly serving our patients by creating a caring environment where
every team member is empowered to share input and fulfill oppor-
tunities to continually advance their practice,” said Roger Len
Royal, RN, BA, CNOR, Director of Surgical Services for Bethesda
Hospital East and Bethesda Hospital West.
Royal leads under a shared governance model in which his nurs-
ing staff members have autonomy and can express concerns. His staff
nurses also play an active role in leadership committees to ensure
nursing experts have a strong voice in helping to shape their practice.
Patient-centered care is also important at Bethesda Health.
Monthly perioperative seminars allow perioperative clinicians to con-
nect with future patients to discuss specific surgical procedures or get
hands-on experience with OR technology, such as surgical robots.
ADVANCING CARE WITH CUTTING-EDGE
TECHNOLOGIES
As part of its patient-focused care, Bethesda Health continues to in-
troduce new perioperative technologies to improve patient out-
comes and advance coordinated care in the OR. For example,
within Bethesda Hospital East’s 13 OR suites, a new endourology
robotic surgery program was recently launched. Bethesda Hospital
West, which opened in 2013 and includes three OR suites, now in-
cludes a highly advanced endovascular hybrid OR suite.
Both East and West hospitals include integrated ORs with ad-
vanced technologies, such as those that enable digital imaging ac-
quisition and display and touchscreen mobile devices for nurses to
manage various technology in the room from one location.
“It’s been an exciting process to introduce these new technolo-
gies and witness firsthand the benefits to our staff nurses in stream-
lining their workflow,” Royal acknowledged.
CONTINUING A PATHWAY TO EXCELLENCE
In 2013, Bethesda Health was designated an ANCC Pathway to
Excellence® organization, a hard-earned accolade that Royal’s
nurses played a key role in achieving. Royal said a focus on excel-
lence in daily work and in professional development is something
he and his managerial staff members promote and encourage
among the nursing staff members.
