2. INTRODUCTION
• Is soft, wedge shape lymphoid organ lying mainly in left
hypochondrium and partially in epigastrium.
• It is highly vascular
• color- dark purple
• Length- 5inch
• Weight- 7 ounes

3. • Ribs: 9th and 10th
• its not palpable normally
• Two ends: anterior, posterior
• 3 borders: superior, inferior and intermediate
• Two surfaces: diaphragmatic and visceral

5. VISCERAL SURFACE:
• Fundus of stomach
• Anterior surface of left kidney
• Splenic flexure of colon
• Tail of pancreas
DIAPHRAGMATIC SURFACE:
• Is related to diaphragm which separates the spleen from the
costodiaphragmatic recess of pleura, lung and 9th -11th ribs of left
side.

8. PERITONEAL RELATION
• Intra peritoneal
• Ligaments:
– Gastrosplenic ligament : hilum of spleen to greater curvature of
stomach
– Lienorenal ligament: hilum of spleen to anterior surface of the kidney
– Phrenicocolic ligament: horizontal fold of peritoneum from splenic
flexure of colon to diaphragm. It supports anterior end of spleen.

11. • BLOOD SUPPLY:
– Splenic artery
– Splenic vein
• LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE:
– No proper lymphatic drainage
– Pancreaticosplenic nodes

14. FUNCTIONS
• Phagocytosis: includes reticular cells, modified reticular cells, free
macrophages, endothelial cells.
• Haemopoieses: especially during fetal life.
• Immune response:
• Storage of RBCs.

15. • SPLENOMEGALY:
Spleen enlarges obliquely towards right iliac fossa in the direction of 10th rib.
• SPLENIC PUNCTURE:
Spleen can be puncture during splenomegaly in order to prevent laceration.
Puncture can occur through 8th and 9th intercostal space in the mid axillary line
using a lumbar puncture needle.
