POINT BEACH — Whether it
was Cameron Barnes to
McKayla Hughes or McKay-
la Hughes to Cameron
Barnes, the Point Beach girls
basketball duo combined for
29 of Beach’s 61 points in
their win against Asbury
Park last Friday.
The tandem of Hughes
and Barnes have been work-
ing together since the soccer
season in the fall and their
chemistry translates to the
basketball court.
“She [Hughes] has really
great vision on the soccer
field and here, and we’re also
close off the field, too, so I
think we know what each
other is going to do,” said
Barnes, who finished with a
game-high 19 points. “I defi-
nitely think the fall season
helped with that too. I know
where she’s going to pass it
and when she’s going to pass
it.”
Asbury Park scored first
on a layup but it was Barnes
and Hughes who quickly
took the lead for Beach.
Barnes drove the lane and
was fouled on a made layup.
She went to the foul line and
completed the 3-point play.
On the next Gulls posses-
sion Hughes drove to the
hoop and was slapped hard
on her arm while executing a
layup. The ball went through

TOMS RIVER — Saturday was
a record setting day for the
Point Boro girls indoor track
team as they competed in the
New Jersey State Inter-
scholastic Athletic Associa-
tion [NJSIAA] Group II Re-
lay Championships.
Competing inside the Ben-
nett Indoor Athletic Com-
plex in Toms River, the Pan-
thers broke three school
records on the track in addi-
tion to the high jump record,
which has been standing tall
since 1995.
The team of Megan Zabel-
ski and Mimi Leturgez com-
bined for 10-00, earning first
place in the high jump as well
as a new school record.
“It was nice to finally break
that and I’m glad I had Mimi
to break it with,” said Zabels-
ki who had only tied the
record three times before
with teammate Dakota Kar-
ras.

POINT BEACH — The Point
Beach boys basketball team
has lost a few games in the
fourth quarter this season
making Saturday’s 62-61 vic-
tory over Colts Neck a true
statement victory.
“We just wanted to get a
team win. We’ve been wait-
ing for a big win and we
thought this was our chance,”
said Beach’s Alex Mrusek
who finished the game with
13 points. “We matched up
with this team well. We fig-
ured if we contact denied 32
[Kyle Gordon] and 20 [Lloyd
Daniels] we’d win the game
and that’s what we did.”
Off the opening tip Gordon
hit a layup for Colts Neck
who scored again on their
next possession for a quick 4-
0 lead. Point Beach’s answer
came in the form of a Mike
Rice 3-pointer that received a
resounding cheer from the
home crowd.

continues to impress on the
basketball court as they con-
tinue to improve week in and
week out. The Panthers added
another check to the win col-
umn Tuesday with a 64-38
victory over visiting
Pinelands Regional.
“I feel like we came out
with the right mentality from
the start,” said junior Ally
Lassen. “We worked together
and our assists were up.”
Point Boro had seven differ-
ent players dish out an assist,

Gulls help head coach Jeff Bower earn his 100th win
BY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
POINT BEACH — It was a
milestone week for the Point
Beach wrestling team with
their head coach, Jeff Bower,
eclipsing 100 wins this past
weekend. Bower achieved the
coaching milestone after the
Garnet Gulls went undefeat-
ed in Saturday’s quad match
with Freehold Township,
Matawan and Neptune.
The Gulls toughest match
came against Freehold, which
they won 37-27.
Point Beach opened the
match with decision wins
from Nick Kenmure and For-
rest Gardner in the 220- and
285-pound bouts, respective-
ly. Will Jarvis then beat Free-
hold’s Alex Salkin by major
decision 16-8, to give the
Gulls a 10-0 lead.
Kyle Cleary of Freehold got
his team on the board with a
pin in the second period of
the 113-pound bout but
Beach’s Jude Lovgren added
to Beach’s lead with a 10-0
major decision win in the
120-pound weight class.
The tables quickly turned
as Freehold earned a pin in
the 126-pound bout, a deci-
sion win in the 132-pound
bout and a pin in the 138-
pound bout.
Trailing 21-14, Beach’s John
Finnerty matched up with
Freehold’s Kyle Hillermeier.
After five minutes and 20
seconds on the mat Finnerty
beat out Hillermeier by tech-
nical fall, 19-4. This brought
the Gulls within two team
points of their opponent.
Freehold decided to give
Beach the lead with a forfeit
in the 152-pound bout and
Jimmy Sherlock piled on an-
other six points with a sec-
ond period pin against Free-
hold’s Larson Johnson.
With three bouts to go the
Gulls were up 31-21. Free-
hold’s Ryan Fiolek took the
170-pound bout by decision
to pull them within seven
with two bouts to go.
In the 182-pound weight
class Beach’s Jack Baker
pinned Mike Carlucci 58 sec-
onds into the first period to
clinch the victory.
The Gulls lost the final
bout by decision but took the
match 37-27.
In the 50-19 win against
Matawan the Gulls won nine
bouts. They took the 120-, 138-
and 145-pound bouts with
pins from Lovgren, Roddy
Rupp and Finnerty, respec-
tively. Matawan also forfeited
285, 152 and 220.
The Garnet Gulls beat
Neptune 49-19 with pins in
106-, 126-, 152-, 170- and 220-
while Neptune only recorded
two pins in 182 and 195.
On Wednesday Point
Beach got back to work
against Keansburg. The Gulls
took the match 57-15 and
boasted some quick pins.
Baker recorded the quick-
est for Beach with a 16-sec-
ond pin on Keansburg’s
Adam Lambert in the 182-
pound weight class. Finnerty
also recorded a quick pin in
the 145-pound bout. He
pinned Keansburg’s Brian Ed-
wards in 29 seconds.
Other Garnet Gulls pins in
the match came from Rupp in
138, Cody Liguori in 195 and
Forrest Gardner in 285.
Yesterday the team trav-
eled to face Middletown
South but the match occurred
too late for today’s paper.
Read next week’s Ocean Star
for full coverage.
The Gulls will hit the mats
again tomorrow against
Maple Shade. The match is
away and set to begin at 10
a.m.

POINT BORO — After last
week’s one point loss to Jack-
son Liberty the Point Boro
wrestling team bounced back
with four big wins. On Satur-
day the Panthers traveled for
a quad-match against Central
Regional, Allentown and
Hillsborough.
They beat Central Region-
al, 49-18, Hillsborough, 46-14,
and Allentown, 69-12.
Against Central Regional
the match began in the 138-
pound weight class but Cen-
tral decided to forfeit putting
Boro out in front 6-0.
Matt Youmans then took
the 145-pound bout with a pin
in the first period. Boro’s
Courtland Hackel followed it
up with a major decision win
in the 152-pound weight class
and Boro had established a
16-0 lead.
Central gained some
ground with decision wins in
the 160- and 182-pound
weight classes but the Pan-
thers tallied pins from Gene
Franceschini [170], Billy
Borowsky [195] and Dominic
Infante [220].
Central was behind 24-6
before Darious Marrow
pinned Boro’s Anthony
Bonavito in the heavyweight
bout. Boro responded swiftly
with pins in the 106- and 113-
pound weight classes.
Central took the 120- and
132-pound bouts by decision
while Boro freshman Spencer
Robinson won the 126-pound
class with an 11-5 decision
win, solidifying the 49-18 win.
Against Hillsborough the
Panthers only lost the 152-,
160-, 182- and 120-pound
weight classes. They secured
wins in the rest of the classes
with pins in the 170-, 195-,
220-, 285-, and 106-pound
bouts for the 46-14 win.
Their dominance contin-
ued with a 69-12 win over Al-
lentown with seven pins. Al-
lentown forfeited three
weight classes and only won
two bouts, 182 and 138.
On Wednesday the Pan-
thers secured another victory
over Donovan Catholic on
senior night. They won by a
score of 61-12.
Tomorrow Point Boro
hosts a quad match with
Barnegat, Lacey and Toms

onships [OCC] this past

peted Friday, taking eighth
place overall with 108.9
points. The boys team com-
peted Saturday, taking
eighth place overall with
157.9 points.
Standing out for Boro was
Joe Skimmons who took
first place in the 100-breast-
stroke [59.32] and first place
in the 200-yard individual
medley [1:57.69].
“Joe Skimmons was ex-
ceptional at the meet,” said
head coach Patricia Ryan.
“He just makes it look easy.”
Teammate Jeff Poland
took third place in the 200-
freestyle with a time of
1:55.58. He also finished in
fourth place in the 100-back-
stroke with a time of 58.81.
The Panthers finished in
fourth place in the 400-
freestyle relay and the 200-
medley relay with big help
from Josiah Gliddon, who
swam the butterfly leg of the
medley relay.
Another notable finish for
Boro was Matt Wehmeyer
who swam his best time in
the 100-butterfly despite not
placing. The senior relay
team of Ray Ruffini, Matt
Jamieson, Darian Healy and
Matt Schwartz added points
for the Panthers in the 200-
freestyle relay.
The boys team also had a
meet against Barnegat on
Wednesday where they lost
by a score of 86-62. Despite
the loss, the Panthers still
had strong finishes in the
water.
The team of Poland, Ruffi-
ni, Gliddon and Johnson
took first place in the 200-
medley relay. In the 200-
freestyle relay it was the
team of Ruffini, Schwartz,
Healy and Jamieson that
swam to a first place finish.
Rounding out the relay
teams was the group of
Poland, Jamieson, Gliddon,
and Johnson with a first
place finish in the 400-
freestyle relay.
Individual first place fin-
ishes for Boro belonged to
Poland in the 200-freestyle
and 100-backstroke and
Johnson in the 500-freestyle
and 200-individual medley.
In Friday’s girls OCC the
Panthers cashed in some
strong finishes as well.
In the 400-freestyle relay
the team of Tara Caucino,
Trinity Steinmetz, Julia Ack-
erman and Madi Severio fin-
ished in fifth place with a
time of 4:13.01. The same
team placed sixth in the
200-yard medley relay with
a time of 2:07.22.
Ackerman also placed
sixth in the 100-butterfly
[1:05.84] and seventh in the
100-breaststroke.
Individual swimmers that
added points to Boro’s score
were Caucino in the 100-
butterfly, Steinmetz in the
50-freestyle and 100-breast-
stroke and Severio in the 50-
freestyle and 100-freestyle.
The Panthers also earned
some points in the 200-
freestyle relay with the team
of Alexa Petersen, Hannah
Rotunno, Olivia Zahorsky
and Alex Raab.
The girls team then com-
peted against Barnegat on
Wednesday earning their
first win of the season, 89-
80.
The team of Caucino,
Steinmetz, Ackerman and
Severio placed first in the
200-medley relay and the
400-freestyle relay.
Ackerman took first in the
100-breaststroke and the
100-butterfly, Caucino
placed first in the 200-indi-
vidual medley, Steinmetz
took first in the 50-freestyle
and Raab took first place in
the 500-freestyle.
The two swim teams will
be back in the pool on Mon-
day when they host Jackson
Liberty. The meet is at

It is no news that the
Point Beach girls basketball
team is rebuilding a young
team so it is always refresh-
ing when those young play-
ers reveal their potential.
Beach’s Cameron Barnes
broke out with a game-high
19 points in the Garnet
Gulls’ win over Asbury Park
and then dropped a team-
high 11 points in their win
over Henry Hudson.
“It feels good to score but
it's an even better feeling
having hardworking team-
mates to help achieve those
baskets,” said Barnes, a
humble player.
She always seems to be
on the receiving end of
passes from freshman team-
mate, McKayla Hughes, in
similar fashion to how the
two worked well together
on the soccer pitch in the
fall.
Barnes, a sophomore, is a
multi-sport athlete playing
soccer in the fall, basketball
in the winter and track and
field in the spring.
“Even though soccer is
my favorite sport, basketball
is always a fun challenge,”
explained Barnes. “I've
played winter basketball
since grade school, but I
was lucky enough to have
Ray Cervino as a coach in
sixth to eighth grades to
help prepare for high
school.”
Barnes continues to im-
prove as an all-around
threat for Point Beach. She
has quick hands on defense,
which helps produce
turnovers and slow oppo-
nents’ transitions.
She has great vision on
the court lending to assists
and being able to find the
open player or lane.
When it comes down to
it, Barnes can shoot and
also drive the lane, go to the
hoop strong and finish with
a score for Beach.
The team now has three
wins on the season after
this week but Barnes knows
they are far from finished
improving their play.
“Obviously, our goal is a
winning season, but more
importantly we strive to
make gradual improve-
ments over time, even if it's
not overnight,” stated the
sophomore. “Coach Lags
and Coach T push us to
work hard and have fun
while also keeping a posi-
tive team atmosphere.”
When the going gets
tough for the Garnet Gulls,
expect Barnes to be hus-
tling from end line to end
line and definitely expect a
few more wins out of this
young team.

BY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
TOMS RIVER — One of the
first events of Saturday’s New
Jersey State Interscholastic
Athletic Association [NJSI-
AA] Group II Relay Champi-
onships was the distance
medley relay, which consists
of a 1200-, 400-, 800- and
1600-meter leg.
Representing the Point
Boro boys indoor track team
in that event was Devin Hart,
Alex Stupar, Cortlandt Dalik
and Dylan Peters, a team that
has been working towards
breaking the school record all
season.
“Today meant a lot, I know,
for the distance medley
team,” said head coach Mike
Colonna. “They took 5th
place in Group II and they
shattered the school record
by nine-and-a-half seconds.”
The team of four ran a time
of 11:01.1 to beat the previous
record. Their individual ef-
forts were reflected in their
times, especially Dalik who
ran the 800-meter leg.
“I think Cortlandt was the
huge part of that success in
the school record, taking 11
seconds off his 800 time from
three weeks ago,” stated
Colonna. “He was focused, he
got his mind set and he came
through for us. That was
huge.”
Peters, a senior, helped
Boro take home the record
with a 4:36-mile and agreed
with Colonna’s assessment,
saying, “Our 800 made up a
lot of time. Our 1200 made up
a lot more time so I think
that’s what made the differ-
ence today. Our 400 and mile
was very consistent.”
It was the only event that
Boro would break a school
record in but they still found
a lot of success throughout
the meet.
The team of Mike Brown,
Dominic Peters, Jack
Ehrhardt and Ian Knapp al-
most broke the school record
in the 4x200-meter relay but
came up just shy by a few
seconds.
“They all were running
great legs,” said Colonna.
“They all ran bests for them-
selves during that race so it
was all in all a great relay.”
In the 4x400-meter relay
the team of Tyler Haines, Pe-
ters, Ehrhardt, and Stupar fin-
ished with a time of 3:45.77.
They too were a few seconds
off the school record and
from qualifying for the Penn
Relays, which is a goal they
have had since the start of the
season. They look forward to
today’s Shore Conference
Championships as another
chance to improve.
“I know those guys are
amped up and really trying to
get to Penn Relays,” ex-
plained Colonna. “We’re go-
ing to use that [Shore Confer-
ence Championships] as our
next opportunity to try and
change up the lineup or
maybe the order and see
what we can do to put our-
selves in a better position.”
In the pole vault event, the
team of Nick Vail-Stein and
Matt Moran were six inches
away from placing in the top
six, something they usually
do.
“I know they’re a little
bummed out but I told them
to keep their heads high and
just get back at it tomorrow,”
Colonna said. “Short term
memory and just keep mov-
ing on.”
In the high jump Ehrhardt
finally got the opportunity to
jump after a long process
back from injury. Unfortu-
nately for the Panthers, they
only had one jumper since
Haines was out with a calf in-
jury.
“He [Ehrhardt] only had
one crack at 5-10 today,
cleared it on his second at-
tempt before they no longer
allowed him to continue
jumping because he didn’t
have a partner,” stated Colon-
na. “While Jack is disappoint-
ed he didn’t get a personal
best I think he’s getting a lit-
tle more confidence back
now that he can jump again
and he got one off of his
shoulders.”
Colonna has seen improve-
ment in almost every mem-
ber of the team and he hopes
the season continues on that
trajectory.
“I think a lot of the guys are
starting to see a lot of suc-
cess,” he said. “We started off
back in December and we
had starting points and I’d
say 95 percent of these guys
have gotten better each and
every meet since.”
Dylan Peters knew the
team needed to stay hungry
heading into today’s meet
and offered advice to his
teammates, saying, “Just to
keep preparing. I mean this
whole week was a bit of a
transition week so just to
keep calm and prepare for
what’s to come.”
Colonna was pleased with
Saturday’s results and hopes
to continue motivating his
athletes to continually im-
prove. They have been work-
ing hard since the start of De-
cember but there is still a
long road ahead.
“All in all, these guys had a
great day. A lot of good per-
formances that I’m happy
with,” said Colonna. “These
guys just continue chipping
away at their times and hope-
fully that continues through-
out the whole season and it
will really put us in a good
position going into the spring
to continue to break school
records and hopefully up our
position in counties and
Group II.”

COLLEGE NOTEBOOK
Teammates that swim together, win together
BY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
POINT PLEASANT — It has
been eight years since the
start of the Point
Beach/Manasquan co-op
teams for swimming, ice
hockey and bowling and oth-
er than the opportunity for
students to participate in a
sport that their school might
not have, it has created long-
lasting friendships.
Erin Perna, a Point Beach
graduate and Melissa Haley, a
Manasquan graduate, both
were members of the
women’s co-op swim team in
their four years of high
school.
Under the tutelage of head
coach Craig Murin the team
won four conference champi-
onships, all while breaking
records at the Monmouth
County Championships and
the Shore Conference Cham-
pionships. The team also
qualified and competed in
the state tournament each
year.
The icing on the cake for
Perna and Haley was being
named captains of the team
in their senior year. But the
two swimmers were far from
done with their careers in the
pool.
Both swimmers ended up
taking their talents to The
College of New Jersey
[TCNJ] swimming and diving
team after graduating high
school.
Haley had applied early de-
cision before ever knowing
Perna was interested in TCNJ
or continuing her swimming
career but both were excited
when they learned they
would be going together.
“I had applied early deci-
sion so I didn’t even know
Erin was interested but I
heard through a friend when
she made her decision,” ex-
plained Haley. “I was excited
to have someone that I knew
from home that I could reach
out to and work through
freshman year with.”
Perna was just as happy to
have someone she knew
along for the ride, especially
having to tackle the time
management of classes, prac-
tices and meets.
“The transition from high
school swimming to college
swimming is a lot harder. It’s
a lot more time management
– a rigorous schedule,” said
Perna. “Getting used to
swimming in college was eas-
ier having someone I know
doing it with me.”
Perna, who competes in
the 200-freestyle and 500-
freestyle, and Haley, who
competes in the 1650-
freestyle, 500-freestyle and
400-individual medley, even-
tually learned the right bal-
ance of school and swimming
and earned the title of cap-
tains this year for their senior
season.
“As seniors you could say
we’ve mastered it,” said Per-
na. “We both got 4.0’s this fall
and we were excited about
that.”
“Coming in as a freshman
is definitely a learning expe-
rience trying to balance that
intense work load with the
practice we have,” added Ha-
ley. “Over the years we fig-
ured out how to balance be-
ing part of the swim team and
staying up with our school
work. We spent a lot of time
in the library.”
Perna is completing a dou-
ble major in political science
and environmental studies
with a minor in public health
and will graduate in May of
this year while Haley is pur-
suing a 5-year bachelor’s and
master’s degree with a dou-
ble major in special educa-
tion and iSTEM with an ex-
pected graduation date of
May 2017.
The two have also been
recognized as New Jersey
Athletic Conference [NJAC]
scholar athletes, TCNJ schol-
ar athletes and have made the
Dean’s List.
The dynamic duo will be
recognized for their contri-
butions during TCNJ’s senior
night meet against rival
Rowan University tomorrow
at 2 p.m. It is their last home
meet of the season, a bitter-
sweet moment for the two
swimmers.
“It’s definitely bittersweet.
It’s for the NJAC title, which
we have won the past three
years,” said Perna. “It’s also
sad because it’s our last home
meet together.”
Although it is their final
home meet together, Haley is
excited about the competi-
tion, saying, “Knowing it’s the
last meet, I think we’re both
pumped and excited to swim
in our home pool one last
time.”

Boro Panthers hit double

BY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
POINT BORO — The Point
Boro ice hockey team has not
had the luxury of too many
lopsided victories this season
but that all changed last
Thursday in a game against
Toms River South. The Pan-
thers skated to an 11-1 victory
with senior captain Matt Ki-
mak netting a hat trick.
The first goal of the game
actually came from Toms
River’s Hunter Simeon 1:21
into the game and Boro re-
sponded 20 seconds later.
Ryan McCabe scored with an
assist from Chris Miller and
Thomas Colorio and the
floodgates opened.
Corey Campbell scored
Boro’s next goal two minutes
later before Kimak found his
first of three goals. He then
netted his second of the game
10 seconds later with help
from Campbell and Brett
Nelson.
McCabe hit his second goal
of the game with four min-
utes left to go in the first pe-
riod and David Costagliola
scored with 1:14 left to put the
Panthers ahead 6-1 before the
start of the second period.
Kimak opened the second
period with his third goal for
the hat trick. Brett Nelson
and Ryan Carr each added a
goal for the Panthers in the
second period.
In the third period Boro’s
Eric Dahl added a goal and
Costagliola found the net for
his second goal of the game
and the final Boro score in an
11-1 romping.
In between the pipes for
the Panthers was Connor
Bennett who made 14 saves.
Kimak completed the game
with the hat trick and an as-
sist while Campbell finished
the game with one goal and
three assists. John Callander
and Eddie Coyne each
recorded two assists in the
big win.
Tonight the Panthers travel
to play St. Rose. Last time the
two teams played, Boro skat-
ed away with a 3-1 victory in a
physical game. The game is at
Wall Ice Arena and the puck
is set to drop at 8 p.m.

POINT BORO BOYS BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
Point Boro comes close to uprooting Lakewood
BY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
POINT BORO — Friday night
was nothing short of exciting
as the Point Boro boys bas-
ketball team hosted the Lake-
wood Piners in front of a
packed Memorial Middle
School Gymnasium. It was a
B South matchup, which only
added to the excitement of
every play. In the end it was
Lakewood that took the 55-50
win over Point Boro.
“They have a big three,”
said Boro head coach Kevin
Hynes. “They have Amir
[Tyler], [Sean] Barksdale and
[Adi] Palmer. They are their
main guys.”
The Panthers did their best
to contain the big three but it
was difficult to stop players
of Tyler’s caliber on every
play.
“Amir – he’s a different ani-
mal. He just does things that
other kids can’t do. He’s
physical, strong and he’s fast,”
stated Hynes after the game.
“It’s one thing when they’re
just strong or just fast but
when you put that combina-
tion together it’s hard to
guard especially at the high
school level.”
Lakewood scored first on a
steal and layup and Boro’s
Matt VanNostrand respond-
ed with a jumper. The crowd
was loud but quickly soft-
ened when Tyler dropped a
nothing-but-net 3-pointer
from two feet beyond the arc.
The Piners continued to
stay just out of Boro’s reach.
When the Panthers came
within two points it was
Tyler who hit another three
to put his team up five at the
close of the first quarter.
With less than a minute left
in the first half the Piners had
increased their lead to 26-19.
VanNostrand drove toward
the basket and was fouled
sending him to the line with
about three seconds left on
the clock.
He missed the shot but
John Duda was there to pull
down the rebound and sneak
in the basket before the
buzzer. Down 26-21, Point
Boro was looking for a way to
keep the game close after
halftime.
While they were able to
keep pace and the pressure
on, Lakewood pushed their
lead to 10 in the fourth quar-
ter. Boro needed an answer
and it came in the form of
Duda.
He was fouled on a jumper
during the Panthers next pos-
session and he went to the
line to make both free throws
making the score 48-40.
Lakewood hit one more
bucket before Duda went on
a 6-0 run on three shots from
the field. With just over two
minutes left in the game Boro
was within four, 50-46.
“John is a talented kid. We
have high hopes for him.
When he’s on, he’s a heck of a
player,” said Hynes on Duda’s
second-half performance.
“He struggled a little earlier
on so I took him out and told
him to take a breather and re-
lax. I told him again at half-
time and we told him he’s go-
ing to have a great second
half and he came out and he
did.”
Lakewood then hit one-of-
two free throws and Boro’s
Jack Waddleton hit a basket
to cut the deficit to three but
the Piners never let up. They
kept driving to the hoop and
chasing down rebounds to
push their lead to 53-48.
The final points of the
game came in bizarre fashion
after a foul was called on
VanNostrand who had gotten
a bit too hands-on with Tyler
on a play. Tyler responded by
clapping in VanNostrand’s
face and was called for a
technical. After a brief dis-
cussion both Boro and Lake-
wood earned two free shots.
Tyler made both for Lake-
wood and Duda made both
for Boro. One inbounds play
later the buzzer sounded and
the Panthers took the 55-50
loss at home.
“We were just all about
fighting and coming out here
and making them earn every
basket. We were in the game.
We had a chance. All game
long we had a chance,” said
Hynes. “Little things we need
to tighten up. Get a big re-
bound or get a big loose ball
or something.”
Duda led the Panthers with
16 points while Tyler led the
Piners with 21 points. Jack
Waddleton chipped in 13
points for Boro and VanNos-
trand finished with 10.
It was a close game and at
the end of it Hynes could not
hold too much against his
team.
“I told them obviously
there are things we can cor-
rect but how can I be mad at
you guys after that game – af-
ter putting forth that effort? I
just have to say, hey, they
made one or two more plays
than we did and hopefully
next time we can turn that
around a little bit.”

On Tuesday Point Boro
traveled to play Pinelands
Regional. Duda had a team-
high 13 points as the Panthers
beat out Pinelands 55-53.
Mike Licchio and Pat Feehan
each chipped in nine points
for Boro in the win.
Yesterday they played Cen-
tral Regional but the game
occurred too late for today’s
paper. Check back next week

loss to Lakewood
The Cougars pushed their
lead to 7-5 before Beach’s
Jimmy Panzini made a re-
verse layup while getting
fouled. He completed the 3-
point play for a Garnet Gulls
lead.
They kept a lead briefly
until Gordon drilled a shot
from downtown to put Colts
Neck in front 12-10. The Gulls
tied it once before the
Cougars hit a jumper to end
the first quarter up 14-12.
The second quarter was
back-and-forth with multiple
lead changes. Beach managed
to secure a 25-24 lead and
with the clock winding down
Mrusek snuck in a layup to
put them up 27-24 at the half.
Colts Neck tied the game at
27 to start the second half af-
ter a made free throw and
jumper. Point Beach’s Danny
Frauenheim then answered
with a 3-pointer from the cor-
ner to go back on top but
Colts Neck quickly tied it up
with a three of their own.
The two teams continued
battling hard and the game
was once again knotted, this
time at 37. Daniels then drove
to the hoop for a Colts Neck
score and was fouled on the
play. He hit the foul shot and
Colts Neck was up one point.
The Gulls then put togeth-
er a 6-0 run with scores from
Frauenheim, Panzini and
Mike Rice before Colts Neck
hit a basket. The two teams
exchanged scores and in an
effort to prevent Point Beach
from getting a solid shot be-
fore the buzzer Colts Neck
committed three fouls. The
third quarter then ended with
Beach up 45-42.
The referees were calling
the game tight but Beach
head coach Nick Catania and
his team knew not to let it
impact their game.
“You can never let the offi-
cials affect you,” said Catania.
“We were just trying to play
our game, let them do their
job and we’ll do ours.”
The Gulls did their job and
stayed out in front of Colts
Neck the whole fourth quar-
ter despite a late surge in the
final minute of the game.
They managed to slow Colts
Neck in transition all game
and worked tirelessly on the
boards.
“We wanted to shut down
Daniels and we wanted to
stop their transition. We did
both of those things,” ex-
plained Catania. “The third
one was to keep even with
them on the boards battle.”
The Gulls also excelled in
transition with Trevor Covey
usually on the closing end of
a play in the fourth quarter.
“Trevor is only a sopho-
more and he’s having a really
nice year. He’s excellent in
transition. That’s one of his
huge strengths. He’s a great
finisher around the rim,” stat-
ed Catania. “He’s stepping up
and making big plays. He’s
been doing it all season for
us. He’s making big shots, big
threes and he’s starting to
take the next step.”
Catania also explained how
the team had performed well
in the practices leading up to
Saturday’s game. A true team
effort in practice reflected in
the team win on the court.
“It’s a full team effort most
certainly. Everybody on the
team – in practice those guys,
they push us,” said Covey of
the rest of the team. “We
have two coaches jump in
and they always do a good
job and help us mold. It
helped us a lot in that game.”
Panzini scored 15 points for
the Gulls while Covey added
13 and Frauenheim put up 11.
“It was a big win as a
team,” added Mrusek. “Now
we’re back to 500 and ready
to get some more wins.”
Point Beach earned their
next win on Tuesday in a
game against Henry Hudson.
The Gulls beat out the Admi-
rals 50-34 with Mrusek drop-
ping 18 points. Rice and Cov-
er each added nine points in
the victory.
The Gulls also earned a
win over Asbury Park last
Friday, 70-48. Point Beach has
now won four games in a row.
Yesterday the team had a
big matchup against Mater
Dei but the game occurred
too late for today’s paper.

Point Boro’s girls indoor track team competed in Saturday’s Group II Relay Championships. The team
broke four school records and placed in a handful of events for a successful day on the track and field.
Leturgez and Zabelski each
jumped 5-00, continually
feeding off each other to im-
prove with each jump.
“I think it’s great to just
have that companionship to-
gether. It’s nice to push each
other and just be there for
each other and root each oth-
er on,” explained Zabelski.
“We had some good competi-
tion today but I think we both
did a great job.”
Head coach Billy Kostenko
was proud to see the duo
break the school record, es-
pecially after watching Zabel-
ski get so close each year.
Kostenko agrees that it is ex-
tremely beneficial for two
talents like Leturgez and
Zabelski to be on the same
team.
“They’re fun to watch be-
cause they’re very different
athletes yet they’re results
are very similar,” he stated. “I
think that it helps them to
stay focused. It’s kind of neat
that their best competition is
on their own team.”
The Panthers found more
record-breaking success in
the distance medley relay,
4x800-meter relay and
4x200-meter relay.
In the distance medley re-
lay the team of Danielle
Tsougarakis, Robin Fiorenti-
no, Kristi Lennon and Katie
Bragen ran a time of 13:13.23
breaking their own record
from last year. The finish was
also good enough for sixth
place in the race.
In the 4x800 the team of
Lily Brouder, Emily Tufano,
Tsougarakis and Bragen also
broke their own record from
last year with a time of
10:18.82. They also finished
fourth overall in the race.
In the 4x200 Jess Gaven,
Summer Jarolmen, Hope
Savino and Zabelski broke
the school record from 2009,
clocking in at 1:55.13.
It was a productive day for
the girls team and Kostenko
was proud of his athletes.
“It’s really exciting. It’s the
group coming together and
it’s bonding for the girls,” he
said. “It challenges them to
count on each other and so
many times I think that
makes them nervous but they
run so well because they’re
not just running for them-
selves. They’re running for
the team and their friends.”
The team now turns to the
Shore Conference Champi-
onships, which begin at 4:30
p.m. today at the Bennett In-
door Athletic Complex.
“I think that everyone did
great but I think that we still
want to stay hungry and still
perform our best and just
keep wanting to improve our-
selves and have a great sea-
son,” said Zabelski looking
ahead to today’s competition.
“You don’t want to give up
on yourself even though
you’ve made it this far,”
added Leturgez. “You want to
push yourself even further.”

the net and she took a trip to
the charity stripe. Hughes hit
the free throw and Point
Beach had a 6-2 lead.
Point Beach pushed their
lead to 10-4 before Asbury’s
Krystina Barnes brought the
Blue Bishops back in the game
with two 3-pointers. Knotted
at 10, it was the relentless pres-
sure from Beach’s defense that
gave them the lead for good.
On two separate occasions,
Hughes nabbed a steal, quick-
ly followed by a lead pass to
Barnes who finished at the
basket. By the end of the quar-
ter the Gulls were up 19-10.
“We’re trying to emphasize
our defense and it’s just a mat-
ter of us getting more disci-
plined, which is on me to make
sure they’re in the right spots
doing the right things,” said
head coach Jay Lagomarsino.
“We’re getting a little better at
that, little by little.”
The defense was fast, per-
sistent and aggressive through
all four quarters of play. It pro-
duced turnovers and threw off
Asbury’s offensive rhythm.
This opened up more oppor-
tunities for the offense, which
established a 31-17 lead by half-
time.
“Offensively, there were
times when they took their
time against the zone and we
got decent shots, which is nice.
They’ve been great to work
with. They’re very receptive,”
stated Lagomarsino. “I just
have to make sure I give them
the right strategies so they can
be successful.”
The strategies were working
well for Beach and a 46-23 lead
at the start of the fourth quar-
ter afforded Lagomarsino the
opportunity to sub in his
bench players.
They outscored Asbury 15-12
through the final eight min-
utes to show the Garnet Gulls
have some depth in various
positions.
“I think we have some depth
and we have a lot of girls who
hopefully will be able to keep
contributing for the rest of the
season,” said Lagomarsino.
“All the freshmen are really
great and the seniors are all re-
ally great role models and our
coaches are really positive so
that helps,” said Barnes of the
win. “I think it’s going to help
us moving forward and work-
ing on what we need to work
on and hopefully getting some
more wins.”
Lagomarsino hopes the duo
of Barnes and Hughes contin-
ues to produce defense and of-
fense as their chemistry con-
tinues to improve.
“It starts with their defense.
They work very hard on their
defense with their feet, hands
– everything. Then when we
get a turnover or transition
they’re very good about push-
ing it forward,” he explained.
“They see the court and they
are feeding off each other very
well. Tonight was a nice night
and they’re both very young so
hopefully we’ll be seeing that
for a few years.”
On Tuesday the team trav-
eled to play Henry Hudson. In
a back-and-forth game the
Garnet Gulls held on to win
33-30. Barnes had a team-high
11 points and Hughes chipped
in nine.

POINT BORO BOWLING NOTEBOOK
Boro’s girls bowling
team swept Asbury Park
3-0 last Thursday
Hughes, who ran point for
Boro, always managed to find
the open teammate – wherev-
er they were on the court.
“I think Megan doesn’t get
credit for enough assists be-
cause she gets the ball inside
and sometimes we miss the
shot,” said head coach David
Drew. “But we work on that
in practice. We work on the
extra pass and finishing and
tonight you saw it.”
The Panthers held a five-
point lead at the end of the
first quarter through hustle
and the spreading out of the
offense. The only downside
to the quarter was an injury
to sophomore Devon Won-
dolowski.
On a Pinelands Regional
breakaway, Wondolowski
tracked down Ellie Sorrentio
who had received a long pass
and was looking for the easy
layup. Wondolowski jumped
out for the big block and her
momentum carried her into
the padded wall where she
banged her knee. She would
sit out the rest of the game
with ice on her knee and the
Panthers continued securing
blocks and points in her ab-
sence.
Lassen finished the game
with eight blocks for Boro
and seemed to be the only
thing Pinelands Regional
could not figure out. She also
led the Panthers with 16 re-
bounds.
“Talk about improving
from one year to the next,”
said Drew about Lassen. “She
has really blossomed into a
tremendous all-division type
player.”
Point Boro put together a
20-point second quarter to go
up 33-21 and piled on 10 more
points in the third. Pinelands
hit a layup at the buzzer and
heading into the fourth quar-
ter the Panthers were up 43-
30.
In another strong quarter
for Point Boro they put up 21
points. With a significant
lead Drew was able to put out
his all freshmen squad on the
floor.
“When we get to leave and
we put in the younger girls it
teaches them how to work
the offenses and get used to
pressure because in two
years when we’re not here
they’re going to have to be
able to do it on their own,”
said Lassen. “I feel like
they’ve been doing a really
good job with that too.”
Morgan Woods nabbed a
steal for Boro right out of the
gate and the freshmen
worked the ball around the
floor on their possession.
Then Riley Sexton drove to
the hoop, pulled the defense
toward her and dumped the
ball off to Paige Yocum who
finished with the layup.
Drew explained how he
plays the freshmen through-
out the game regularly but
does not always get the
chance to play all five. They
take advantage of the oppor-
tunity knowing they are the
future of the team.
“They’re in the game all
the time. It’s not always just
five of them but getting the
five of them playing together
– they do a great job,” stated
Drew. “It’s great to see it on
the varsity level knowing that
you have five freshmen out
there who are going to be
with the program for the next
three years.”
The win over Pinelands
Regional coupled with last
Friday’s 47-18 victory over
Lakewood moves the Pan-
thers to 7-3 on the season and
6-1 in the B South division.
Despite their record Drew
and his team know to stay
level-headed as the season
only gets tougher.
“It’s great. We have a game
on Thursday so we’re going
to get ready for Thursday and
not worry about our record
until the end,” he said. “We’re
going to keep playing. We’ll
try to win and hopefully we’ll
be on top somewhere at the
end.”
On Thursday the girls
hosted Central Regional in a
game that occurred too late
for today’s paper. Be sure to

The tandem of Hughes and Barnes have been work- ing together since the soccer season in the fall and their chemistry translates to the basketball court. “She [Hughes] has really great vision on the soccer field and here, and we’re also close off the field, too, so I think we know what each other is going to do,” said Barnes, who finished with a game-high 19 points. “I defi- nitely think the fall season helped with that too. I know where she’s going to pass it and when she’s going to pass it.” Asbury Park scored first on a layup but it was Barnes and Hughes who quickly took the lead for Beach. Barnes drove the lane and was fouled on a made layup. She went to the foul line and completed the 3-point play. On the next Gulls posses- sion Hughes drove to the hoop and was slapped hard on her arm while executing a layup. We’ve been wait- ing for a big win and we thought this was our chance,” said Beach’s Alex Mrusek who finished the game with 13 points. “We matched up with this team well. We fig- ured if we contact denied 32 [Kyle Gordon] and 20 [Lloyd Daniels] we’d win the game and that’s what we did.” Off the opening tip Gordon hit a layup for Colts Neck who scored again on their next possession for a quick 4- 0 lead. WWW.STARNEWSGROUP.COMPAGE 28 THE OCEAN STAR FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2016 SPORTS POINT BEACH WRESTLING NOTEBOOK Gulls help head coach Jeff Bower earn his 100th win BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT BEACH — It was a milestone week for the Point Beach wrestling team with their head coach, Jeff Bower, eclipsing 100 wins this past weekend. Bower achieved the coaching milestone after the Garnet Gulls went undefeat- ed in Saturday’s quad match with Freehold Township, Matawan and Neptune. The Gulls toughest match came against Freehold, which they won 37-27. Point Beach opened the match with decision wins from Nick Kenmure and For- rest Gardner in the 220- and 285-pound bouts, respective- ly. Will Jarvis then beat Free- hold’s Alex Salkin by major decision 16-8, to give the Gulls a 10-0 lead. The tables quickly turned as Freehold earned a pin in the 126-pound bout, a deci- sion win in the 132-pound bout and a pin in the 138- pound bout. Trailing 21-14, Beach’s John Finnerty matched up with Freehold’s Kyle Hillermeier. After five minutes and 20 seconds on the mat Finnerty beat out Hillermeier by tech- nical fall, 19-4. This brought the Gulls within two team points of their opponent. Freehold decided to give Beach the lead with a forfeit in the 152-pound bout and Jimmy Sherlock piled on an- other six points with a sec- ond period pin against Free- hold’s Larson Johnson. With three bouts to go the Gulls were up 31-21. Free- hold’s Ryan Fiolek took the 170-pound bout by decision to pull them within seven with two bouts to go. On Wednesday Point Beach got back to work against Keansburg. The Gulls took the match 57-15 and boasted some quick pins. Baker recorded the quick- est for Beach with a 16-sec- ond pin on Keansburg’s Adam Lambert in the 182- pound weight class. Finnerty also recorded a quick pin in the 145-pound bout. He pinned Keansburg’s Brian Ed- wards in 29 seconds. Other Garnet Gulls pins in the match came from Rupp in 138, Cody Liguori in 195 and Forrest Gardner in 285. Yesterday the team trav- eled to face Middletown South but the match occurred too late for today’s paper. Read next week’s Ocean Star for full coverage. The girls team com- peted Friday, taking eighth place overall with 108.9 points. The boys team com- peted Saturday, taking eighth place overall with 157.9 points. Standing out for Boro was Joe Skimmons who took first place in the 100-breast- stroke [59.32] and first place in the 200-yard individual medley [1:57.69]. “Joe Skimmons was ex- ceptional at the meet,” said head coach Patricia Ryan. “He just makes it look easy.” Teammate Jeff Poland took third place in the 200- freestyle with a time of 1:55.58. He also finished in fourth place in the 100-back- stroke with a time of 58.81. The Panthers finished in fourth place in the 400- freestyle relay and the 200- medley relay with big help from Josiah Gliddon, who swam the butterfly leg of the medley relay. Another notable finish for Boro was Matt Wehmeyer who swam his best time in the 100-butterfly despite not placing. The senior relay team of Ray Ruffini, Matt Jamieson, Darian Healy and Matt Schwartz added points for the Panthers in the 200- freestyle relay. The boys team also had a meet against Barnegat on Wednesday where they lost by a score of 86-62. Despite the loss, the Panthers still had strong finishes in the water. The team of Poland, Ruffi- ni, Gliddon and Johnson took first place in the 200- medley relay. In the 200- freestyle relay it was the team of Ruffini, Schwartz, Healy and Jamieson that swam to a first place finish. Rounding out the relay teams was the group of Poland, Jamieson, Gliddon, and Johnson with a first place finish in the 400- freestyle relay. Individual first place fin- ishes for Boro belonged to Poland in the 200-freestyle and 100-backstroke and Johnson in the 500-freestyle and 200-individual medley. Follow him on Twitter @dompollio. Skimmons took first place in the 100-breast- stroke and 200-yard individual medley It is no news that the Point Beach girls basketball team is rebuilding a young team so it is always refresh- ing when those young play- ers reveal their potential. Beach’s Cameron Barnes broke out with a game-high 19 points in the Garnet Gulls’ win over Asbury Park and then dropped a team- high 11 points in their win over Henry Hudson. “It feels good to score but it's an even better feeling having hardworking team- mates to help achieve those baskets,” said Barnes, a humble player. She always seems to be on the receiving end of passes from freshman team- mate, McKayla Hughes, in similar fashion to how the two worked well together on the soccer pitch in the fall. Barnes, a sophomore, is a multi-sport athlete playing soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and track and field in the spring. “Even though soccer is my favorite sport, basketball is always a fun challenge,” explained Barnes. “I've played winter basketball since grade school, but I was lucky enough to have Ray Cervino as a coach in sixth to eighth grades to help prepare for high school.” Barnes continues to im- prove as an all-around threat for Point Beach. She has quick hands on defense, which helps produce turnovers and slow oppo- nents’ transitions. She has great vision on the court lending to assists and being able to find the open player or lane. When it comes down to it, Barnes can shoot and also drive the lane, go to the hoop strong and finish with a score for Beach. The team now has three wins on the season after this week but Barnes knows they are far from finished improving their play. “Obviously, our goal is a winning season, but more importantly we strive to make gradual improve- ments over time, even if it's not overnight,” stated the sophomore. “Coach Lags and Coach T push us to work hard and have fun while also keeping a posi- tive team atmosphere.” When the going gets tough for the Garnet Gulls, expect Barnes to be hus- tling from end line to end line and definitely expect a few more wins out of this young team. • 3. WWW.STARNEWSGROUP.COM FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2016 THE OCEAN STAR PAGE 29SPORTS STEVE WEXLER THE OCEAN STAR On Saturday Point Boro’s boys indoor track team competed in the Group II Relay Championships. Head coach Mike Colonna was proud of their performance, constantly seeing improvement with each meet. POINT BORO BOYS INDOOR TRACK NOTEBOOK Relay team goes the distance STEVE WEXLER THE OCEAN STAR Point Boro’s Dylan Peters [in black] makes his way around a competitor during the Group II Relay Championships on Saturday. Peters, along with teammates Devin Hart, Alex Stupar and Cortlandt Dalik, broke the school record in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:01.1. BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR TOMS RIVER — One of the first events of Saturday’s New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association [NJSI- AA] Group II Relay Champi- onships was the distance medley relay, which consists of a 1200-, 400-, 800- and 1600-meter leg. Representing the Point Boro boys indoor track team in that event was Devin Hart, Alex Stupar, Cortlandt Dalik and Dylan Peters, a team that has been working towards breaking the school record all season. “Today meant a lot, I know, for the distance medley team,” said head coach Mike Colonna. “They took 5th place in Group II and they shattered the school record by nine-and-a-half seconds.” The team of four ran a time of 11:01.1 to beat the previous record. Their individual ef- forts were reflected in their times, especially Dalik who ran the 800-meter leg. “I think Cortlandt was the huge part of that success in the school record, taking 11 seconds off his 800 time from three weeks ago,” stated Colonna. “He was focused, he got his mind set and he came through for us. That was huge.” Peters, a senior, helped Boro take home the record with a 4:36-mile and agreed with Colonna’s assessment, saying, “Our 800 made up a lot of time. Our 1200 made up a lot more time so I think that’s what made the differ- ence today. Our 400 and mile was very consistent.” It was the only event that Boro would break a school record in but they still found a lot of success throughout the meet. The team of Mike Brown, Dominic Peters, Jack Ehrhardt and Ian Knapp al- most broke the school record in the 4x200-meter relay but came up just shy by a few seconds. “They all were running great legs,” said Colonna. “They all ran bests for them- selves during that race so it was all in all a great relay.” In the 4x400-meter relay the team of Tyler Haines, Pe- ters, Ehrhardt, and Stupar fin- ished with a time of 3:45.77. They too were a few seconds off the school record and from qualifying for the Penn Relays, which is a goal they have had since the start of the season. They look forward to today’s Shore Conference Championships as another chance to improve. “I know those guys are amped up and really trying to get to Penn Relays,” ex- plained Colonna. “We’re go- ing to use that [Shore Confer- ence Championships] as our next opportunity to try and change up the lineup or maybe the order and see what we can do to put our- selves in a better position.” In the pole vault event, the team of Nick Vail-Stein and Matt Moran were six inches away from placing in the top six, something they usually do. “I know they’re a little bummed out but I told them to keep their heads high and just get back at it tomorrow,” Colonna said. “Short term memory and just keep mov- ing on.” In the high jump Ehrhardt finally got the opportunity to jump after a long process back from injury. Unfortu- nately for the Panthers, they only had one jumper since Haines was out with a calf in- jury. “He [Ehrhardt] only had one crack at 5-10 today, cleared it on his second at- tempt before they no longer allowed him to continue jumping because he didn’t have a partner,” stated Colon- na. “While Jack is disappoint- ed he didn’t get a personal best I think he’s getting a lit- tle more confidence back now that he can jump again and he got one off of his shoulders.” Colonna has seen improve- ment in almost every mem- ber of the team and he hopes the season continues on that trajectory. “I think a lot of the guys are starting to see a lot of suc- cess,” he said. “We started off back in December and we had starting points and I’d say 95 percent of these guys have gotten better each and every meet since.” Dylan Peters knew the team needed to stay hungry heading into today’s meet and offered advice to his teammates, saying, “Just to keep preparing. I mean this whole week was a bit of a transition week so just to keep calm and prepare for what’s to come.” Colonna was pleased with Saturday’s results and hopes to continue motivating his athletes to continually im- prove. They have been work- ing hard since the start of De- cember but there is still a long road ahead. “All in all, these guys had a great day. A lot of good per- formances that I’m happy with,” said Colonna. “These guys just continue chipping away at their times and hope- fully that continues through- out the whole season and it will really put us in a good position going into the spring to continue to break school records and hopefully up our position in counties and Group II.” Hart, Stupar, Dalik & Peters broke a school record in the distance medley relay Saturday

The Board of Education will COLLEGE NOTEBOOK Teammates that swim together, win together BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT PLEASANT — It has been eight years since the start of the Point Beach/Manasquan co-op teams for swimming, ice hockey and bowling and oth- er than the opportunity for students to participate in a sport that their school might not have, it has created long- lasting friendships. Erin Perna, a Point Beach graduate and Melissa Haley, a Manasquan graduate, both were members of the women’s co-op swim team in their four years of high school. Under the tutelage of head coach Craig Murin the team won four conference champi- onships, all while breaking records at the Monmouth County Championships and the Shore Conference Cham- pionships. The team also qualified and competed in the state tournament each year. The icing on the cake for Perna and Haley was being named captains of the team in their senior year. But the two swimmers were far from done with their careers in the pool. Both swimmers ended up taking their talents to The College of New Jersey [TCNJ] swimming and diving team after graduating high school. Haley had applied early de- cision before ever knowing Perna was interested in TCNJ or continuing her swimming career but both were excited when they learned they would be going together. “I had applied early deci- sion so I didn’t even know Erin was interested but I heard through a friend when she made her decision,” ex- plained Haley. “I was excited to have someone that I knew from home that I could reach out to and work through freshman year with.” Perna was just as happy to have someone she knew along for the ride, especially having to tackle the time management of classes, prac- tices and meets. “The transition from high school swimming to college swimming is a lot harder. It’s a lot more time management – a rigorous schedule,” said Perna. “Getting used to swimming in college was eas- ier having someone I know doing it with me.” Perna, who competes in the 200-freestyle and 500- freestyle, and Haley, who competes in the 1650- freestyle, 500-freestyle and 400-individual medley, even- tually learned the right bal- ance of school and swimming and earned the title of cap- tains this year for their senior season. “As seniors you could say we’ve mastered it,” said Per- na. “We both got 4.0’s this fall and we were excited about that.” “Coming in as a freshman is definitely a learning expe- rience trying to balance that intense work load with the practice we have,” added Ha- ley. “Over the years we fig- ured out how to balance be- ing part of the swim team and staying up with our school work. We spent a lot of time in the library.” Perna is completing a dou- ble major in political science and environmental studies with a minor in public health and will graduate in May of this year while Haley is pur- suing a 5-year bachelor’s and master’s degree with a dou- ble major in special educa- tion and iSTEM with an ex- pected graduation date of May 2017. The two have also been recognized as New Jersey Athletic Conference [NJAC] scholar athletes, TCNJ schol- ar athletes and have made the Dean’s List. The dynamic duo will be recognized for their contri- butions during TCNJ’s senior night meet against rival Rowan University tomorrow at 2 p.m. It is their last home meet of the season, a bitter- sweet moment for the two swimmers. “It’s definitely bittersweet. It’s for the NJAC title, which we have won the past three years,” said Perna. “It’s also sad because it’s our last home meet together.” Although it is their final home meet together, Haley is excited about the competi- tion, saying, “Knowing it’s the last meet, I think we’re both pumped and excited to swim in our home pool one last time.” Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. POINT BORO ICE HOCKEY NOTEBOOK Boro Panthers hit double digits in win over Indians BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT BORO — The Point Boro ice hockey team has not had the luxury of too many lopsided victories this season but that all changed last Thursday in a game against Toms River South. The Pan- thers skated to an 11-1 victory with senior captain Matt Ki- mak netting a hat trick. The first goal of the game actually came from Toms River’s Hunter Simeon 1:21 into the game and Boro re- sponded 20 seconds later. Ryan McCabe scored with an assist from Chris Miller and Thomas Colorio and the floodgates opened. Corey Campbell scored Boro’s next goal two minutes later before Kimak found his first of three goals. He then netted his second of the game 10 seconds later with help from Campbell and Brett Nelson. McCabe hit his second goal of the game with four min- utes left to go in the first pe- riod and David Costagliola scored with 1:14 left to put the Panthers ahead 6-1 before the start of the second period. Kimak opened the second period with his third goal for the hat trick. Brett Nelson and Ryan Carr each added a goal for the Panthers in the second period. In the third period Boro’s Eric Dahl added a goal and Costagliola found the net for his second goal of the game and the final Boro score in an 11-1 romping. In between the pipes for the Panthers was Connor Bennett who made 14 saves. Kimak completed the game with the hat trick and an as- sist while Campbell finished the game with one goal and three assists. John Callander and Eddie Coyne each recorded two assists in the big win. Tonight the Panthers travel to play St. Rose. Last time the two teams played, Boro skat- ed away with a 3-1 victory in a physical game. A 20% deposit (cash or certi- POINT BORO BOYS BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK Point Boro comes close to uprooting Lakewood BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT BORO — Friday night was nothing short of exciting as the Point Boro boys bas- ketball team hosted the Lake- wood Piners in front of a packed Memorial Middle School Gymnasium. It was a B South matchup, which only added to the excitement of every play. In the end it was Lakewood that took the 55-50 win over Point Boro. “They have a big three,” said Boro head coach Kevin Hynes. “They have Amir [Tyler], [Sean] Barksdale and [Adi] Palmer. They are their main guys.” The Panthers did their best to contain the big three but it was difficult to stop players of Tyler’s caliber on every play. “Amir – he’s a different ani- mal. He just does things that other kids can’t do. He’s physical, strong and he’s fast,” stated Hynes after the game. “It’s one thing when they’re just strong or just fast but when you put that combina- tion together it’s hard to guard especially at the high school level.” Lakewood scored first on a steal and layup and Boro’s Matt VanNostrand respond- ed with a jumper. The crowd was loud but quickly soft- ened when Tyler dropped a nothing-but-net 3-pointer from two feet beyond the arc. The Piners continued to stay just out of Boro’s reach. When the Panthers came within two points it was Tyler who hit another three to put his team up five at the close of the first quarter. With less than a minute left in the first half the Piners had increased their lead to 26-19. VanNostrand drove toward the basket and was fouled sending him to the line with about three seconds left on the clock. He missed the shot but John Duda was there to pull down the rebound and sneak in the basket before the buzzer. Down 26-21, Point Boro was looking for a way to keep the game close after halftime. While they were able to keep pace and the pressure on, Lakewood pushed their lead to 10 in the fourth quar- ter. Boro needed an answer and it came in the form of Duda. He was fouled on a jumper during the Panthers next pos- session and he went to the line to make both free throws making the score 48-40. Lakewood hit one more bucket before Duda went on a 6-0 run on three shots from the field. With just over two minutes left in the game Boro was within four, 50-46. “John is a talented kid. We have high hopes for him. When he’s on, he’s a heck of a player,” said Hynes on Duda’s second-half performance. “He struggled a little earlier on so I took him out and told him to take a breather and re- lax. I told him again at half- time and we told him he’s go- ing to have a great second half and he came out and he did.” Lakewood then hit one-of- two free throws and Boro’s Jack Waddleton hit a basket to cut the deficit to three but the Piners never let up. They kept driving to the hoop and chasing down rebounds to push their lead to 53-48. The final points of the game came in bizarre fashion after a foul was called on VanNostrand who had gotten a bit too hands-on with Tyler on a play. Tyler responded by clapping in VanNostrand’s face and was called for a technical. After a brief dis- cussion both Boro and Lake- wood earned two free shots. Tyler made both for Lake- wood and Duda made both for Boro. One inbounds play later the buzzer sounded and the Panthers took the 55-50 loss at home. “We were just all about fighting and coming out here and making them earn every basket. We were in the game. We had a chance. All game long we had a chance,” said Hynes. “Little things we need to tighten up. Get a big re- bound or get a big loose ball or something.” Duda led the Panthers with 16 points while Tyler led the Piners with 21 points. Jack Waddleton chipped in 13 points for Boro and VanNos- trand finished with 10. It was a close game and at the end of it Hynes could not hold too much against his team. “I told them obviously there are things we can cor- rect but how can I be mad at you guys after that game – af- ter putting forth that effort? I just have to say, hey, they made one or two more plays than we did and hopefully next time we can turn that around a little bit.” For video highlights of the B South matchup search the Ocean Star Sports Show on YouTube.com. On Tuesday Point Boro traveled to play Pinelands Regional. Duda had a team- high 13 points as the Panthers beat out Pinelands 55-53. Mike Licchio and Pat Feehan each chipped in nine points for Boro in the win. Yesterday they played Cen- tral Regional but the game occurred too late for today’s paper. Check back next week for full coverage. Point Boro is back in action tomorrow at home against Warren Hills Regional. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. Duda scores a team- high 16 points in close loss to Lakewood The Cougars pushed their lead to 7-5 before Beach’s Jimmy Panzini made a re- verse layup while getting fouled. He completed the 3- point play for a Garnet Gulls lead. They kept a lead briefly until Gordon drilled a shot from downtown to put Colts Neck in front 12-10. The Gulls tied it once before the Cougars hit a jumper to end the first quarter up 14-12. The second quarter was back-and-forth with multiple lead changes. Beach managed to secure a 25-24 lead and with the clock winding down Mrusek snuck in a layup to put them up 27-24 at the half. Colts Neck tied the game at 27 to start the second half af- ter a made free throw and jumper. Point Beach’s Danny Frauenheim then answered with a 3-pointer from the cor- ner to go back on top but Colts Neck quickly tied it up with a three of their own. The two teams continued battling hard and the game was once again knotted, this time at 37. Daniels then drove to the hoop for a Colts Neck score and was fouled on the play. He hit the foul shot and Colts Neck was up one point. The Gulls then put togeth- er a 6-0 run with scores from Frauenheim, Panzini and Mike Rice before Colts Neck hit a basket. The two teams exchanged scores and in an effort to prevent Point Beach from getting a solid shot be- fore the buzzer Colts Neck committed three fouls. The third quarter then ended with Beach up 45-42. The referees were calling the game tight but Beach head coach Nick Catania and his team knew not to let it impact their game. “You can never let the offi- cials affect you,” said Catania. “We were just trying to play our game, let them do their job and we’ll do ours.” The Gulls did their job and stayed out in front of Colts Neck the whole fourth quar- ter despite a late surge in the final minute of the game. They managed to slow Colts Neck in transition all game and worked tirelessly on the boards. “We wanted to shut down Daniels and we wanted to stop their transition. We did both of those things,” ex- plained Catania. “The third one was to keep even with them on the boards battle.” The Gulls also excelled in transition with Trevor Covey usually on the closing end of a play in the fourth quarter. “Trevor is only a sopho- more and he’s having a really nice year. He’s excellent in transition. That’s one of his huge strengths. He’s a great finisher around the rim,” stat- ed Catania. “He’s stepping up and making big plays. He’s been doing it all season for us. He’s making big shots, big threes and he’s starting to take the next step.” Catania also explained how the team had performed well in the practices leading up to Saturday’s game. A true team effort in practice reflected in the team win on the court. “It’s a full team effort most certainly. Everybody on the team – in practice those guys, they push us,” said Covey of the rest of the team. “We have two coaches jump in and they always do a good job and help us mold. It helped us a lot in that game.” Panzini scored 15 points for the Gulls while Covey added 13 and Frauenheim put up 11. “It was a big win as a team,” added Mrusek. “Now we’re back to 500 and ready to get some more wins.” Point Beach earned their next win on Tuesday in a game against Henry Hudson. The Gulls beat out the Admi- rals 50-34 with Mrusek drop- ping 18 points. Rice and Cov- er each added nine points in the victory. The Gulls also earned a win over Asbury Park last Friday, 70-48. Point Beach has now won four games in a row. Yesterday the team had a big matchup against Mater Dei but the game occurred too late for today’s paper. Check back next week for full coverage. • 6. WWW.STARNEWSGROUP.COMPAGE 32 THE OCEAN STAR FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 2016 SPORTS STEVE WEXLER THE OCEAN STAR Point Boro’s girls indoor track team competed in Saturday’s Group II Relay Championships. The team broke four school records and placed in a handful of events for a successful day on the track and field. Leturgez and Zabelski each jumped 5-00, continually feeding off each other to im- prove with each jump. “I think it’s great to just have that companionship to- gether. It’s nice to push each other and just be there for each other and root each oth- er on,” explained Zabelski. “We had some good competi- tion today but I think we both did a great job.” Head coach Billy Kostenko was proud to see the duo break the school record, es- pecially after watching Zabel- ski get so close each year. Kostenko agrees that it is ex- tremely beneficial for two talents like Leturgez and Zabelski to be on the same team. “They’re fun to watch be- cause they’re very different athletes yet they’re results are very similar,” he stated. “I think that it helps them to stay focused. It’s kind of neat that their best competition is on their own team.” The Panthers found more record-breaking success in the distance medley relay, 4x800-meter relay and 4x200-meter relay. In the distance medley re- lay the team of Danielle Tsougarakis, Robin Fiorenti- no, Kristi Lennon and Katie Bragen ran a time of 13:13.23 breaking their own record from last year. The finish was also good enough for sixth place in the race. In the 4x800 the team of Lily Brouder, Emily Tufano, Tsougarakis and Bragen also broke their own record from last year with a time of 10:18.82. They also finished fourth overall in the race. In the 4x200 Jess Gaven, Summer Jarolmen, Hope Savino and Zabelski broke the school record from 2009, clocking in at 1:55.13. It was a productive day for the girls team and Kostenko was proud of his athletes. “It’s really exciting. It’s the group coming together and it’s bonding for the girls,” he said. “It challenges them to count on each other and so many times I think that makes them nervous but they run so well because they’re not just running for them- selves. They’re running for the team and their friends.” The team now turns to the Shore Conference Champi- onships, which begin at 4:30 p.m. today at the Bennett In- door Athletic Complex. “I think that everyone did great but I think that we still want to stay hungry and still perform our best and just keep wanting to improve our- selves and have a great sea- son,” said Zabelski looking ahead to today’s competition. “You don’t want to give up on yourself even though you’ve made it this far,” added Leturgez. “You want to push yourself even further.” Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. Ready for Shore Conference Champs RECORD FROM PAGE 27 the net and she took a trip to the charity stripe. Hughes hit the free throw and Point Beach had a 6-2 lead. Point Beach pushed their lead to 10-4 before Asbury’s Krystina Barnes brought the Blue Bishops back in the game with two 3-pointers. Knotted at 10, it was the relentless pres- sure from Beach’s defense that gave them the lead for good. On two separate occasions, Hughes nabbed a steal, quick- ly followed by a lead pass to Barnes who finished at the basket. By the end of the quar- ter the Gulls were up 19-10. “We’re trying to emphasize our defense and it’s just a mat- ter of us getting more disci- plined, which is on me to make sure they’re in the right spots doing the right things,” said head coach Jay Lagomarsino. “We’re getting a little better at that, little by little.” The defense was fast, per- sistent and aggressive through all four quarters of play. It pro- duced turnovers and threw off Asbury’s offensive rhythm. This opened up more oppor- tunities for the offense, which established a 31-17 lead by half- time. “Offensively, there were times when they took their time against the zone and we got decent shots, which is nice. They’ve been great to work with. They’re very receptive,” stated Lagomarsino. “I just have to make sure I give them the right strategies so they can be successful.” The strategies were working well for Beach and a 46-23 lead at the start of the fourth quar- ter afforded Lagomarsino the opportunity to sub in his bench players. They outscored Asbury 15-12 through the final eight min- utes to show the Garnet Gulls have some depth in various positions. “I think we have some depth and we have a lot of girls who hopefully will be able to keep contributing for the rest of the season,” said Lagomarsino. “All the freshmen are really great and the seniors are all re- ally great role models and our coaches are really positive so that helps,” said Barnes of the win. “I think it’s going to help us moving forward and work- ing on what we need to work on and hopefully getting some more wins.” Lagomarsino hopes the duo of Barnes and Hughes contin- ues to produce defense and of- fense as their chemistry con- tinues to improve. “It starts with their defense. They work very hard on their defense with their feet, hands – everything. Then when we get a turnover or transition they’re very good about push- ing it forward,” he explained. “They see the court and they are feeding off each other very well. Tonight was a nice night and they’re both very young so hopefully we’ll be seeing that for a few years.” On Tuesday the team trav- eled to play Henry Hudson. In a back-and-forth game the Garnet Gulls held on to win 33-30. Barnes had a team-high 11 points and Hughes chipped in nine. Point Beach also played yes- terday against Mater Dei but the game occurred too late for today’s paper. Be sure to read next week’s Ocean Star for full coverage. The two teams went up against As- bury Park with the boys team winning 1-of-3 matches and the girls team winning the 3-match sweep. Mike Krey bowled the high game for Boro’s boys squad with 179. For the girls it was Megan Taulafo with the high game of 192. The boys team moves to 4- 29 on the season while the girls team moves to 11-19. The Panthers boys team then went up against St. Rose yesterday but the match oc- curred too late for today’s pa- per. Be sure to read next week’s Ocean Star for full coverage. POINT BORO BOWLING NOTEBOOK Boro’s girls bowling team swept Asbury Park 3-0 last Thursday Hughes, who ran point for Boro, always managed to find the open teammate – wherev- er they were on the court. “I think Megan doesn’t get credit for enough assists be- cause she gets the ball inside and sometimes we miss the shot,” said head coach David Drew. “But we work on that in practice. We work on the extra pass and finishing and tonight you saw it.” The Panthers held a five- point lead at the end of the first quarter through hustle and the spreading out of the offense. The only downside to the quarter was an injury to sophomore Devon Won- dolowski. On a Pinelands Regional breakaway, Wondolowski tracked down Ellie Sorrentio who had received a long pass and was looking for the easy layup. Wondolowski jumped out for the big block and her momentum carried her into the padded wall where she banged her knee. She would sit out the rest of the game with ice on her knee and the Panthers continued securing blocks and points in her ab- sence. Lassen finished the game with eight blocks for Boro and seemed to be the only thing Pinelands Regional could not figure out. She also led the Panthers with 16 re- bounds. “Talk about improving from one year to the next,” said Drew about Lassen. “She has really blossomed into a tremendous all-division type player.” Point Boro put together a 20-point second quarter to go up 33-21 and piled on 10 more points in the third. Pinelands hit a layup at the buzzer and heading into the fourth quar- ter the Panthers were up 43- 30. In another strong quarter for Point Boro they put up 21 points. With a significant lead Drew was able to put out his all freshmen squad on the floor. “When we get to leave and we put in the younger girls it teaches them how to work the offenses and get used to pressure because in two years when we’re not here they’re going to have to be able to do it on their own,” said Lassen. “I feel like they’ve been doing a really good job with that too.” Morgan Woods nabbed a steal for Boro right out of the gate and the freshmen worked the ball around the floor on their possession. Then Riley Sexton drove to the hoop, pulled the defense toward her and dumped the ball off to Paige Yocum who finished with the layup. Drew explained how he plays the freshmen through- out the game regularly but does not always get the chance to play all five. They take advantage of the oppor- tunity knowing they are the future of the team. “They’re in the game all the time. It’s not always just five of them but getting the five of them playing together – they do a great job,” stated Drew. “It’s great to see it on the varsity level knowing that you have five freshmen out there who are going to be with the program for the next three years.” The win over Pinelands Regional coupled with last Friday’s 47-18 victory over Lakewood moves the Pan- thers to 7-3 on the season and 6-1 in the B South division. Despite their record Drew and his team know to stay level-headed as the season only gets tougher. “It’s great. We have a game on Thursday so we’re going to get ready for Thursday and not worry about our record until the end,” he said. “We’re going to keep playing. We’ll try to win and hopefully we’ll be on top somewhere at the end.” On Thursday the girls hosted Central Regional in a game that occurred too late for today’s paper.
