POINT PLEASANT — Facing a
season-ending challenge,
many teams might crack un-
der the pressure. But the
Point Boro Panthers this
week displayed a drive and
relaxed composure seldom
seen in a young team.
After earning the Ameri-
can Legion regular season
crown, the Panthers fell short
in the state tournament that
followed. Then came the
start of the Ocean County
Double Elimination Ameri-
can Legion tournament, in
which Boro received the top
seed.
They won their first game
but lost the next, which
moved them down into the
loser’s bracket. This meant
that Point Boro needed to
continue winning their
games or their season would
come to an end. With home
field advantage the Panthers
week of baseball began.
On Monday they faced
Toms River South and came
out on top 4-1. Then came
Lacey Township and Boro
put together a 4-0 shutout be-
hind pitcher Josiah Gliddon.
On Wednesday the Panthers
went toe-to-toe with Brick
Post 348, their American Le-
gion rival this summer sea-
son. The Panther defense
kept Brick down and took the
victory 2-1.
The trio of wins put Boro
in the championship game
against a tough Pinelands
team, where Point Boro
needs to win twice in order
to be crowned tournament
winner. The first game was
played last night at Toms Riv-
er East High School but oc-
curred too late for this week’s
paper. Be sure to pick up a
copy of next week’s Ocean
Star for full coverage.
BORO VS TOMS RIVER SOUTH
On Monday the Panthers
took to the diamond against
Toms River South, an oppo-
nent they had previously tak-
en to extra innings during the
regular Legion season.
Toms River jumped out
early with their opening hit-
ter lining a single to right
field. He moved over to third
on a pop out caught by Boro’s
Kyle Lauria after stealing sec-
ond the play before. Toms
River then hit a fly ball to
right field that scored their
leadoff hitter. Point Boro
closed the inning with a
groundout to Lauria at sec-
ond.
The Panthers had a slow
start at the plate and did not
score a run until their turn at
bat in the fifth inning. Fortu-
nately for them, Tim Rossi
was on the mound and
racked up 5 strikeouts and
with the help of the defense
the score remained 1-0 in

home against Brick Post 348 Wednesday evening. Feehan made it safely home for Boro’s second run in the 2-1 victory. Kyle Lauria [bottom left] beats the throw to home against Lacey Township Tuesday night.
Boro won 4-0. Thomas Paul [bottom right] lays a tag on a Toms River South runner trying to reach second base. The Panthers won 4-1 Monday evening.

pounds and had not been

was something Hurley had
done since he was a kid

“I grew up in Mantoloking

Hurley said. “He got me into

my favorite sport and I
picked it up well.”
Hurley sails for the Man-

Backtrack to 1996 when
Hurley was in his prime. He
had won a National Champi-

While Hurley did not
make the ’96 U.S. sailing
team he never gave up on
his dream and earned a
berth on the 2000 U.S. sail-
ing team.
Shortly following his sail-
ing success, Hurley’s pho-

sailing remained a consis-

starting a family.

THE OCEAN STAR
POINT BEACH — With the
summer season closing out
the one thing the Ocean Gi-
ants were concentrated on
100 percent was the playoffs.
Unfortunately, their playoff
run ended more abruptly
than they would have liked.
Last Saturday the Giants
took to the diamond against
Intensity Baseball for the first
game of a three-game series.
Despite another strong
stint on the mound from Joe
Serrapica, the Giants lost 2-1.
Serrapica kept the team in
the game with 11 strikeouts
through seven innings of
shutout ball.
During that time the Ocean
Giants were maintaining a 1-0
lead that they had acquired in
the first inning.
Sean Arnott lined a single
to center field to lead off the
inning. Bryan Palsi then
moved him over a base while
grounding out to second. De-
ven Del Priore contributed a
sacrifice fly ball to left field
that scored Arnott. Intensity
Baseball closed out the first
inning with a routine ground
ball to short.
The score remained the
same through eight innings of
play and Chris Geraci had
taken over the mound for
Serrapica. In the top of the
ninth Intensity Baseball took
the lead after scoring on an
error and an RBI single. The
Giants were unable to tie the
game with their last chance
at bat and took the 2-1 loss.
The two teams were back
at it Sunday morning and this
time the Ocean Giants made
the most of five hits and
topped Intensity Baseball 4-0.
They went up two runs in
the top of the third inning af-
ter Intensity Baseball had al-
ready put away two outs.
With two Giants on base
Arnott lined a bases-clearing
double to right field.
The Ocean team added an-
other run in the fourth inning
after keeping Intensity Base-
ball at zero. John Mastrangelo
started the inning with a dou-
ble to left field and eventual-
ly scored on a popup single
from Tyler Saito.
In the fifth inning the Gi-
ants added their fourth and
final run on a line drive sin-
gle to left field that plated
Dan Pineda.
On the rubber for the Gi-
ants was Ryan Lillie who
pitched a complete game
shutout. Despite giving up 13
hits, no Intensity Players ever
crossed home plate and Lillie
recorded three strikeouts.
With the series split at one
apiece, Sunday’s second
game determined who kept
playing and who packed up
their uniforms for the sum-
mer. Mark Duffy took to the
mound for the Ocean Giants
and only allowed two runs
through seven innings
pitched. Unfortunately the
team was not able to score
runs of their own, and they
lost 2-0.
Intensity Baseball took a
one-run lead in the bottom of
the first inning and added an-
other run in the fifth inning.
The loss knocked the Ocean
Giants out of the playoffs and
marks the end of their sea-
son. The team finished with
an overall record of 16-16-1.

JERSEY SHORE BASKETBALL LEAGUE NOTEBOOK
Team Shore bested to close out regular season play
BY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
WALL — Team Shore had a
rough finish to their Jersey
Shore Basketball League sea-
son as they lost their final
three games.
Last Wednesday they fell
to Seaview Jeep 98-97, on
Monday they lost to Island
Title 109-85 and on Wednes-
day they dropped the last
game of the season to Larson
Ford, 109-105.
Wednesday’s game falls
under the heartbreaker cate-
gory as Shore held the lead
through the first half but let
it slip as the second half wore
on.
The loss came despite a
game-high 37-point scoring
performance from Shore’s
Neil Wysocki. Mike Rotando
added 20 points and Keith
Hughes dropped another 27.
The first quarter started
with Shore trailing Larson
Ford 8-7 but a minute later
the tables turned and Team
Shore went up 13-8 thanks to
3-pointers from Rotando and
Wysocki.
Larson Ford battled back
to tie the game at 20 with two
minutes left in the quarter
but Hughes stepped up with
a shot from beyond the arc to
reclaim the lead. Team Shore
closed out the quarter 28-26.
The second quarter con-
tinued seeing strong play
from both squads. Hughes
had the hot hand for Shore
and added nine points to his
totals. Larson Ford remained
a presence though and
outscored Shore 26-25. This
brought the game within one
and the first half close with
Team Shore holding on to a
53-52 lead.
The second half was a sur-
prising one as Team Shore
came out looking like a veter-
an squad. Passes were find-
ing their marks and basket-
balls were passing through
the bottom of the basket.
Both Wysocki and Hughes
could not seem to miss and
Rotando was feeding passes
through the smallest of win-
dows.
What made the quarter
surprising though was that
despite Team Shore’s fluid
and cohesive play, Larson
Ford hung with them and
tied the game at 70 with 3:50
left on the third quarter
clock. Shore hit a layup for a
two-point lead but Larson
Ford responded with two
made 3-pointers and a 76-72
lead.
Shore bounced back and
Wysocki tied the game at 78
with a reverse layup but Lar-
son Ford kept the tempo high
and closed out the quarter on
top 82-80.
Try as they may in the
fourth and final quarter,
Team Shore could not regain
a lead. They fell behind 97-88
after five minutes of play and
coach Ralph Rotando called
a much-needed timeout.
The break helped and
thanks to a flagrant foul on
Larson Ford, Shore closed
the deficit to 98-96 with two
made shots from the charity
stripe. Since it was a flagrant
foul, Team Shore kept pos-
session and Hughes put up a
three that just missed its
mark. Wysocki was there to
chorale the rebound and lay
it back in to tie the game at
98.
The two teams briefly ex-
changed leads before tying it
up at 102. Team Shore could
not get a shot to land true
and Larson Ford continued
making their free throws to
slowly inch away. The buzzer
sounded solidifying the 109-
102 loss for Team Shore as
well as the close of a 3-6 sea-
son.
The good news for Team
Shore is that every team gets
a shot during the playoffs and
they will be back in action
next week. The schedule of
playoff games will be posted
on the Jersey Shore Basket-
ball League Facebook page.

favor of Toms River until Bill
Feehan ignited a three-run
Panther rally.
With two outs already put
away in the bottom of the
fifth inning Feehan stepped
up to the plate and jacked a
double to the gap between
left and center field. Damon
Del Priore then lined a single
down the third base line that
scored Feehan and tied the
game. Sebastian Severio then
hit a small infield blooper for
a single and Gliddon came in
as a courtesy runner for the
catcher. The Toms River
pitcher then walked Mark
Leyble, loading the bases for
Point Boro.
Toms River South decided
it was time for a fresh arm on
the mound but that did not
faze Boro’s next batter.
Thomas Paul, another
young Panther talent, got the
pitch he was waiting for and
hit a hard line drive up the
middle that the Toms River
pitcher ducked away from.
The hit to center field was
enough for a single and
scored two more Panthers to
give Point Boro a 3-1 lead.
“I was down two strikes
and I was looking curve ball
and I got it,” said Paul after
the game. “I took advantage
of it and put it back up the
middle.”
Toms River managed to
close out the inning with a fly
out to right field but the dam-
age had been done and mo-
mentum was in Panther terri-
tory.
Boro kept the defense
chugging at 110 percent in the
sixth inning. Feehan made a
spectacular diving catch on a
high fly ball that was tailing
foul down the right field line
for the first out.
“That was huge. I’m sitting
there saying, ‘Get foul get
foul get foul’ and then you
see Billy make the play,” said
head coach David Drew.
“That’s outstanding- he never
gave up on it and that’s the
kind of player that Billy is.
He’s going to go hard all the
time, 100 percent of the time
and you’re never going to
question effort like that.”
Feehan was happy to con-
tribute to the team, saying,
“The ball was tailing away,
the lefty pulled it and it was
going toward the line so I had
to get there and make that
dive. It feels good.”
Point Boro added another
run in the sixth with a sacri-
fice fly off the bat of Feehan.
Rossi faced five Toms River
batters in the seventh and fi-
nal inning striking out three
to take the 4-1 victory.
“Great job by Rossi. We
needed a big effort from the
pitching and the veteran
stepped up and did a great
job,” said Drew. “Tremendous
job by the veterans and the
underclassmen coming to-
gether to make that happen.”
The win kept Boro alive for
another day and Paul was
more than ready to continue
competing.
“It felt good you know. We
worked hard and we de-
served the win,” said Paul af-
ter the game. “We think we’re
one of the better teams in this
league and we should win it
all and we should not let any
of these teams beat us.”
BORO VS LACEY TOWNSHIP
On Tuesday the team went
back to work at home against
Lacey Township. On the
mound this time for Point
Boro was Gliddon who pitch
a complete game shut out
while only allowing two hits.
He recorded three strikeouts
in the 4-0 win.
Boro went up in the fourth
inning on a sacrifice fly from
Leyble. After Lacey made a
pitching change in the fifth
inning Boro tacked on anoth-
er run.
This time Ryan Carne hit a
slow grounder to short. The
Lacey shortstop threw for the
play at home but Lauria slid
in safely for a 2-0 Boro lead.
Point Boro added two
more runs in the bottom of
the sixth inning with an RBI
single from Lauria and a fly
ball to right field that scored
Paul.
The Panther defense close
out the final inning with a
grounder to left field that
Carne scooped up and
chucked to second before the
Lacey batter could reach the
base. The next out was a pop
up to Leyble at third and after
a walk Gliddon struck out the
next batter to close out the
game.
BORO VS BRICK POST 348
On Wednesday evening the
Panthers had to face Brick
Post 348 one last time in or-
der to earn the right to play
Pinelands in the champi-
onship. It was a tense battle
from start to finish, as the
two teams are evenly
matched and just as competi-
tive.
Falconetti threw from the
rubber for the Panthers, ac-
cumulating nine strikeouts
through seven innings and
helped the Panthers to a 2-1
victory.
Boro’s first run came in the
bottom of the second when
Paul hit a grounder past the
Brick shortstop that scored
Severio who earned his spot
on second with a leadoff dou-
ble to the left field fence.
Their next run followed in
the third inning. With two
outs already put away Feehan
reached first on a line drive
down the third base line. Del
Priore then hit a single that
scored Feehan all the way
from first.
Brick came alive in the
fifth inning with a leadoff
double. After Point Boro
managed two outs Brick
earned their first run when
their runner on third stole
home on a pitch that got be-
hind Severio. With two Brick
runners on base, Point Boro
closed out the inning pre-
venting further damage.
In the final two innings Fal-
conetti rose to the occasion.
He struck out two batters in
the sixth and the final two
batters in the seventh to take
the complete game victory.

SHERIFF’S SALE
By virtue of the above stated
Women’s National Team
during her career, but was
excited to be able to come
home to where it all started.
“It has been an amazing
opportunity to be able to be
a part of something great,”
said Rampone in her speech.
“I can go away, be on TV,
but come home and just be
me. At the end of the day,
you always have to remem-
ber where you came from,
where it all started and not
get bigger than that.”
It all started for Rampone
at Point Pleasant Borough
High School where she was
a multi-sport athlete, play-
ing soccer, basketball, track
and field hockey.
After scoring 2,190 career
points during her high
school basketball career,
Rampone stayed local and
headed to Monmouth Uni-
versity on a basketball
scholarship where she was a
three-sport athlete, playing
basketball, soccer and
lacrosse.
During her senior basket-
ball season at Monmouth,
she received an invitation to
try out for Team USA soc-
cer. Although it was a tough
decision to leave in the mid-
dle of basketball season,
Rampone was quick to cred-
it Monmouth University
Athletic Director Dr. Mari-
lyn McNeil for helping her
make the decision that
would end up paying off big
in the future.
Rampone also gave a lot
of credit to her team, Sky
Blue FC, for supporting her
and helping spread the word
about women’s soccer.
“I couldn’t have done it
without everyone in this
room,” said Rampone. “All
the support from my home-
town crowd, all the coaches,
my Sky Blue players. It has
been an amazing adventure
coming back from winning a
World Championship and
stepping on the field with
these pro athletes who have
worked so hard to keep
women’s soccer out there. It
is not easy.”
One of the biggest mes-
sages throughout Ram-
pone’s speech as well as sev-
eral other speeches prior to
hers, is that girls can do any-
thing they set their mind to,
as long as they believe in
themselves.
It was not always easy for
Rampone, who was often
told she could not do some-
thing, but she kept pushing
and following her dreams.
“At an early age, I had a lot
of people that didn’t believe
in me,” said Rampone. “I
paved the way through it
and pushed and fought. If
[girls] believe in themselves,
they can go far.”
Rampone hopes that the
recent success of the U.S.
Women’s National Team
will inspire a younger gen-
eration to get involved and
follow whatever dreams
they might have.
“I hope that everyone who
watched the World Cup, we
inspired to do bigger and
better things,” said Ram-
pone. “Whether it is soccer,
whether it is sports,
whether you want to be a
doctor or an artist. Just go
after it.”
She also hopes that it
gives younger girls some-
thing to strive for as they get
older.
“They can do something
above their mindset,” said
Rampone. “Dream big and
set their goals high. Go after
it and make sure nobody
tells them they can’t.”
Prior to Rampone’s in-
spiring speech, she received
praise from several people
including her former high
school field hockey coach
Judy Goldstein and Mon-
mouth University Athletic
Director Dr. Marilyn Mc-
Neil.
Goldstein started coach-
ing Rampone in middle
school and continued
through high school. She de-
scribed Rampone as the ulti-
mate team player who didn’t
really want the spotlight but
wanted to part of something
bigger. She enjoyed watch-
ing Rampone blossom into
the person she is today.
“Christie has shown how
it is possible to do whatever
you believe in,” said Gold-
stein. “She became a woman
that knew an obstacle was
just something to over-
come.”
Dr. McNeil, who has no
doubt seen some fine ath-
letes come through Mon-
mouth University during
her career, had nothing but
praise for Rampone.
“You are the best Hawk
we have,” said McNeil in her
speech. “We are just thrilled
with your accomplishments
for young men and women,
and all the Hawks.”
The U.S. Women’s Na-
tional Team has two match-
es in August set. On August
16, they will play Costa Rica
at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania and on August
19, they will play Costa Rica
again at Finley Stadium in
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Rampone is also currently
back on the field with Sky
Blue FC, which played at
Yurcak Field on the campus
of Rutgers University.

backseat but this year Hurley
decided to indulge in the pas-
sion he had known for all his
life. He hired a trainer and
worked on getting back into
shape in order to compete in
the 2015 Laser Master’s World
Championships.
As of July 2015, Hurley had
slimmed down to 187 pounds
and made the trip to
Kingston, Ontario in Canada
for the event. The seven-day
schedule included one layday
and one day when the wind
was too light for racing but
still featured 12 races.
Hurley competed in the 45-
54 year old age group in the
Laser Standard Master Divi-
sion where he took second
place out of 50 competitors
with 41 points. Hurley fin-
ished behind Australia’s Brett
Beyer and ahead of the Do-
minican Republic’s Ari
Barshi.
“In the sport itself there is
a lot of camaraderie,” Hurley
said about the competition.
“Out on the water though it is
fierce competition.”
Midway through the event
Hurley was sitting in fifth
place and managed his way
into third.
“Going into the last day I
was in second,” stated Hurley.
He had to beat one competi-
tor to remain in second and
Hurley did just that.
Hurley sails a Laser Class
sailboat, a popular single-
handed dinghy. According to
Hurley the Laser Class is,
“The most competitive sin-
gle-handed class in the
world.”
His second place finish is
impressive considering his
time away from the sport.
The best part is that Hurley
was not done competing after
the Worlds came to a close.
This past week he trudged
back down south to Brant
Beach for the 2015 U.S. Na-
tionals. With 95 points, Hur-
ley finished sixth in the USS-
M division and first in the
Master division. There were
12 total races and he finished
first in the second and tenth
races.
Hurley has no plans to stop
sailing now that he is back in
shape and enjoying the thrill
of competition again. He says
he was happy to have his
family there to support him
and appreciates way back in
the day when his father first
introduced him to the sport.
His career in portrait pho-
tography and the many
places he has traveled to thus
far stem from sailing and
Hurley would not have it any
other way.
“I still can’t believe I was
able to get in shape, jump
back in the boat and perform
at a competitive level after all
these years,” he said. “It’s
been an amazing summer
and makes me realize I’ve got
a lot more years of Laser sail-
ing ahead of me.”

The fluke fishing is very
good right now with both

keepers being caught. Party
boats report good trips for

timers getting a keeper or
two. Keepers are from 4-7

Big bluefish made a reap-
pearance this past weekend
as party boats reported
excellent catches in the area
of the Mud Buoy. The blues
were aggressive and were
hitting jigs. Fish were
between 6-15 pounds.
On the inshore grounds
the bluefin tuna bite has
heated up but for the recre-
ational boater it’s a long ride
to get to this fish. The tuna
are in the area of the Bacardi
about 65 miles out and east of
there. There have also been a
few yellowfin caught in the
same area. The bluefin are
running up to 125 pounds.
Bob over at Fishermen’s
Den in Belmar reports “It
was a decent weekend for
fishermen as several good
fluke were taken on our
rental boats and party boats
out of Belmar. Some very
large blues were taken on the
Miss Belmar and Golden
Eagle including a 24 pound
brute we weighed in off the
boats. The numbers of fish
however are not what we
would like but it gets better
every day. The offshore guys
out of our marina also did
well. The largest tuna was a
140 pound yellowfin taken by
Lou, a shop regular.”
The Manasquan River
Marlin and Tuna Club will be
holding the 35th annual
Offshore Open August 29th
through September 5th. The
captain’s meeting will be
held at the host marina
Crystal Point on Friday
August 28 at 6:30 p.m. Weigh-
ins are nightly at Brielle
Yacht Club in Brielle.
The tournament provides
anglers with the opportunity
to fish two separate days or
one overnighter during the
course of the week. Once
again, the Ray Catena Auto
Group is the presenting
sponsor and has offered the
Ray Catena Audi Challenge-a
$4,000 cash award to the
largest yellowfin. This is in
addition to the Comstock
challenge, awarding $4,000 to
the largest longfin. These
awards are included in the
base entry. The tournament
offers Calcuttas for every eli-
gible specie with this year’s
estimated payout to exceed
$175,000. Last year’s tourna-
ment paid over $165,000 to
the winners and raised funds

ties, including the RFA, RFA-

Residents of the area are
welcome to try pickleball be-

Wear sneakers and join in.
Pickleball is somewhat like
tennis, but it is played on a
smaller court so it is not as
strenuous. The ball is similar
to a plastic Wiffle ball. The
paddle looks like a bigger ver-
sion of a ping pong paddle.
The up-and-coming sport
is popular in senior commu-

is being taught in some Shore

Pickleball is described as

SPORTS The Ocean Star FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2015 PAGE 33 LIFEGUARD TOURNAMENT 34 ABCCL 34 JSBL 35 FISHING TIPS 38 BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT PLEASANT — Facing a season-ending challenge, many teams might crack un- der the pressure. But the Point Boro Panthers this week displayed a drive and relaxed composure seldom seen in a young team. After earning the Ameri- can Legion regular season crown, the Panthers fell short in the state tournament that followed. Then came the start of the Ocean County Double Elimination Ameri- can Legion tournament, in which Boro received the top seed. They won their first game but lost the next, which moved them down into the loser’s bracket. This meant that Point Boro needed to continue winning their games or their season would come to an end. With home field advantage the Panthers week of baseball began. On Monday they faced Toms River South and came out on top 4-1. Then came Lacey Township and Boro put together a 4-0 shutout be- hind pitcher Josiah Gliddon. On Wednesday the Panthers went toe-to-toe with Brick Post 348, their American Le- gion rival this summer sea- son. The Panther defense kept Brick down and took the victory 2-1. The trio of wins put Boro in the championship game against a tough Pinelands team, where Point Boro needs to win twice in order to be crowned tournament winner. The first game was played last night at Toms Riv- er East High School but oc- curred too late for this week’s paper. Be sure to pick up a copy of next week’s Ocean Star for full coverage. BORO VS TOMS RIVER SOUTH On Monday the Panthers took to the diamond against Toms River South, an oppo- nent they had previously tak- en to extra innings during the regular Legion season. Toms River jumped out early with their opening hit- ter lining a single to right field. He moved over to third on a pop out caught by Boro’s Kyle Lauria after stealing sec- ond the play before. Toms River then hit a fly ball to right field that scored their leadoff hitter. Point Boro closed the inning with a groundout to Lauria at sec- ond. The Panthers had a slow start at the plate and did not score a run until their turn at bat in the fifth inning. Fortu- nately for them, Tim Rossi was on the mound and racked up 5 strikeouts and with the help of the defense the score remained 1-0 in AMERICAN LEGION TOURNAMENT NOTEBOOK Point Boro Panthers are going to the ‘ship! Teams of men and women competed in an effort to be crowned top ocean rescue squad. The event began with run-and-grab races from the rest position. There was then a run, swim, paddle and row medley before progressing to boat relays. Ortley Beach took first with Ship Bottom placing second, Seaside Park in third and Lavallette Beach Patrol in fourth. COURTESY OF ERIK WEBER BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT BEACH — With the summer season closing out the one thing the Ocean Gi- ants were concentrated on 100 percent was the playoffs. Unfortunately, their playoff run ended more abruptly than they would have liked. Last Saturday the Giants took to the diamond against Intensity Baseball for the first game of a three-game series. Despite another strong stint on the mound from Joe Serrapica, the Giants lost 2-1. Serrapica kept the team in the game with 11 strikeouts through seven innings of shutout ball. During that time the Ocean Giants were maintaining a 1-0 lead that they had acquired in the first inning. Sean Arnott lined a single to center field to lead off the inning. Bryan Palsi then moved him over a base while grounding out to second. De- ven Del Priore contributed a sacrifice fly ball to left field that scored Arnott. Intensity Baseball closed out the first inning with a routine ground ball to short. The score remained the same through eight innings of play and Chris Geraci had taken over the mound for Serrapica. In the top of the ninth Intensity Baseball took the lead after scoring on an error and an RBI single. The Giants were unable to tie the game with their last chance at bat and took the 2-1 loss. The two teams were back at it Sunday morning and this time the Ocean Giants made the most of five hits and topped Intensity Baseball 4-0. They went up two runs in the top of the third inning af- ter Intensity Baseball had al- ready put away two outs. With two Giants on base Arnott lined a bases-clearing double to right field. The Ocean team added an- other run in the fourth inning after keeping Intensity Base- ball at zero. John Mastrangelo started the inning with a dou- ble to left field and eventual- ly scored on a popup single from Tyler Saito. In the fifth inning the Gi- ants added their fourth and final run on a line drive sin- gle to left field that plated Dan Pineda. On the rubber for the Gi- ants was Ryan Lillie who pitched a complete game shutout. Despite giving up 13 hits, no Intensity Players ever crossed home plate and Lillie recorded three strikeouts. With the series split at one apiece, Sunday’s second game determined who kept playing and who packed up their uniforms for the sum- mer. Mark Duffy took to the mound for the Ocean Giants and only allowed two runs through seven innings pitched. Unfortunately the team was not able to score runs of their own, and they lost 2-0. Intensity Baseball took a one-run lead in the bottom of the first inning and added an- other run in the fifth inning. The loss knocked the Ocean Giants out of the playoffs and marks the end of their sea- son. The team finished with an overall record of 16-16-1. Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. • 3. WWW.STARNEWSGROUP.COM FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2015 THE OCEAN STAR PAGE 35SPORTS JERSEY SHORE BASKETBALL LEAGUE NOTEBOOK Team Shore bested to close out regular season play BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR WALL — Team Shore had a rough finish to their Jersey Shore Basketball League sea- son as they lost their final three games. Last Wednesday they fell to Seaview Jeep 98-97, on Monday they lost to Island Title 109-85 and on Wednes- day they dropped the last game of the season to Larson Ford, 109-105. Wednesday’s game falls under the heartbreaker cate- gory as Shore held the lead through the first half but let it slip as the second half wore on. The loss came despite a game-high 37-point scoring performance from Shore’s Neil Wysocki. Mike Rotando added 20 points and Keith Hughes dropped another 27. The first quarter started with Shore trailing Larson Ford 8-7 but a minute later the tables turned and Team Shore went up 13-8 thanks to 3-pointers from Rotando and Wysocki. Larson Ford battled back to tie the game at 20 with two minutes left in the quarter but Hughes stepped up with a shot from beyond the arc to reclaim the lead. Team Shore closed out the quarter 28-26. The second quarter con- tinued seeing strong play from both squads. Hughes had the hot hand for Shore and added nine points to his totals. Larson Ford remained a presence though and outscored Shore 26-25. This brought the game within one and the first half close with Team Shore holding on to a 53-52 lead. The second half was a sur- prising one as Team Shore came out looking like a veter- an squad. Passes were find- ing their marks and basket- balls were passing through the bottom of the basket. Both Wysocki and Hughes could not seem to miss and Rotando was feeding passes through the smallest of win- dows. What made the quarter surprising though was that despite Team Shore’s fluid and cohesive play, Larson Ford hung with them and tied the game at 70 with 3:50 left on the third quarter clock. Shore hit a layup for a two-point lead but Larson Ford responded with two made 3-pointers and a 76-72 lead. Shore bounced back and Wysocki tied the game at 78 with a reverse layup but Lar- son Ford kept the tempo high and closed out the quarter on top 82-80. Try as they may in the fourth and final quarter, Team Shore could not regain a lead. They fell behind 97-88 after five minutes of play and coach Ralph Rotando called a much-needed timeout. The break helped and thanks to a flagrant foul on Larson Ford, Shore closed the deficit to 98-96 with two made shots from the charity stripe. Since it was a flagrant foul, Team Shore kept pos- session and Hughes put up a three that just missed its mark. Wysocki was there to chorale the rebound and lay it back in to tie the game at 98. The two teams briefly ex- changed leads before tying it up at 102. Team Shore could not get a shot to land true and Larson Ford continued making their free throws to slowly inch away. The buzzer sounded solidifying the 109- 102 loss for Team Shore as well as the close of a 3-6 sea- son. The good news for Team Shore is that every team gets a shot during the playoffs and they will be back in action next week. The schedule of playoff games will be posted on the Jersey Shore Basket- ball League Facebook page. Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. With two outs already put away in the bottom of the fifth inning Feehan stepped up to the plate and jacked a double to the gap between left and center field. Damon Del Priore then lined a single down the third base line that scored Feehan and tied the game. Sebastian Severio then hit a small infield blooper for a single and Gliddon came in as a courtesy runner for the catcher. The Toms River pitcher then walked Mark Leyble, loading the bases for Point Boro. Toms River South decided it was time for a fresh arm on the mound but that did not faze Boro’s next batter. Thomas Paul, another young Panther talent, got the pitch he was waiting for and hit a hard line drive up the middle that the Toms River pitcher ducked away from. The hit to center field was enough for a single and scored two more Panthers to give Point Boro a 3-1 lead. “I was down two strikes and I was looking curve ball and I got it,” said Paul after the game. “I took advantage of it and put it back up the middle.” Toms River managed to close out the inning with a fly out to right field but the dam- age had been done and mo- mentum was in Panther terri- tory. Boro kept the defense chugging at 110 percent in the sixth inning. Feehan made a spectacular diving catch on a high fly ball that was tailing foul down the right field line for the first out. “That was huge. I’m sitting there saying, ‘Get foul get foul get foul’ and then you see Billy make the play,” said head coach David Drew. “That’s outstanding- he never gave up on it and that’s the kind of player that Billy is. He’s going to go hard all the time, 100 percent of the time and you’re never going to question effort like that.” Feehan was happy to con- tribute to the team, saying, “The ball was tailing away, the lefty pulled it and it was going toward the line so I had to get there and make that dive. It feels good.” Point Boro added another run in the sixth with a sacri- fice fly off the bat of Feehan. Rossi faced five Toms River batters in the seventh and fi- nal inning striking out three to take the 4-1 victory. “Great job by Rossi. We needed a big effort from the pitching and the veteran stepped up and did a great job,” said Drew. “Tremendous job by the veterans and the underclassmen coming to- gether to make that happen.” The win kept Boro alive for another day and Paul was more than ready to continue competing. “It felt good you know. We worked hard and we de- served the win,” said Paul af- ter the game. “We think we’re one of the better teams in this league and we should win it all and we should not let any of these teams beat us.” BORO VS LACEY TOWNSHIP On Tuesday the team went back to work at home against Lacey Township. On the mound this time for Point Boro was Gliddon who pitch a complete game shut out while only allowing two hits. He recorded three strikeouts in the 4-0 win. Boro went up in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Leyble. After Lacey made a pitching change in the fifth inning Boro tacked on anoth- er run. This time Ryan Carne hit a slow grounder to short. The Lacey shortstop threw for the play at home but Lauria slid in safely for a 2-0 Boro lead. Point Boro added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single from Lauria and a fly ball to right field that scored Paul. The Panther defense close out the final inning with a grounder to left field that Carne scooped up and chucked to second before the Lacey batter could reach the base. The next out was a pop up to Leyble at third and after a walk Gliddon struck out the next batter to close out the game. BORO VS BRICK POST 348 On Wednesday evening the Panthers had to face Brick Post 348 one last time in or- der to earn the right to play Pinelands in the champi- onship. It was a tense battle from start to finish, as the two teams are evenly matched and just as competi- tive. Falconetti threw from the rubber for the Panthers, ac- cumulating nine strikeouts through seven innings and helped the Panthers to a 2-1 victory. Boro’s first run came in the bottom of the second when Paul hit a grounder past the Brick shortstop that scored Severio who earned his spot on second with a leadoff dou- ble to the left field fence. Their next run followed in the third inning. With two outs already put away Feehan reached first on a line drive down the third base line. Del Priore then hit a single that scored Feehan all the way from first. Brick came alive in the fifth inning with a leadoff double. After Point Boro managed two outs Brick earned their first run when their runner on third stole home on a pitch that got be- hind Severio. With two Brick runners on base, Point Boro closed out the inning pre- venting further damage. In the final two innings Fal- conetti rose to the occasion. He struck out two batters in the sixth and the final two batters in the seventh to take the complete game victory. Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. At the end of the day, you always have to remem- ber where you came from, where it all started and not get bigger than that.” It all started for Rampone at Point Pleasant Borough High School where she was a multi-sport athlete, play- ing soccer, basketball, track and field hockey. After scoring 2,190 career points during her high school basketball career, Rampone stayed local and headed to Monmouth Uni- versity on a basketball scholarship where she was a three-sport athlete, playing basketball, soccer and lacrosse. During her senior basket- ball season at Monmouth, she received an invitation to try out for Team USA soc- cer. Although it was a tough decision to leave in the mid- dle of basketball season, Rampone was quick to cred- it Monmouth University Athletic Director Dr. Mari- lyn McNeil for helping her make the decision that would end up paying off big in the future. Rampone also gave a lot of credit to her team, Sky Blue FC, for supporting her and helping spread the word about women’s soccer. “I couldn’t have done it without everyone in this room,” said Rampone. “All the support from my home- town crowd, all the coaches, my Sky Blue players. It has been an amazing adventure coming back from winning a World Championship and stepping on the field with these pro athletes who have worked so hard to keep women’s soccer out there. It is not easy.” One of the biggest mes- sages throughout Ram- pone’s speech as well as sev- eral other speeches prior to hers, is that girls can do any- thing they set their mind to, as long as they believe in themselves. It was not always easy for Rampone, who was often told she could not do some- thing, but she kept pushing and following her dreams. “At an early age, I had a lot of people that didn’t believe in me,” said Rampone. “I paved the way through it and pushed and fought. If [girls] believe in themselves, they can go far.” Rampone hopes that the recent success of the U.S. Women’s National Team will inspire a younger gen- eration to get involved and follow whatever dreams they might have. “I hope that everyone who watched the World Cup, we inspired to do bigger and better things,” said Ram- pone. “Whether it is soccer, whether it is sports, whether you want to be a doctor or an artist. Just go after it.” She also hopes that it gives younger girls some- thing to strive for as they get older. “They can do something above their mindset,” said Rampone. “Dream big and set their goals high. Go after it and make sure nobody tells them they can’t.” Prior to Rampone’s in- spiring speech, she received praise from several people including her former high school field hockey coach Judy Goldstein and Mon- mouth University Athletic Director Dr. Marilyn Mc- Neil. Goldstein started coach- ing Rampone in middle school and continued through high school. She de- scribed Rampone as the ulti- mate team player who didn’t really want the spotlight but wanted to part of something bigger. She enjoyed watch- ing Rampone blossom into the person she is today. “Christie has shown how it is possible to do whatever you believe in,” said Gold- stein. “She became a woman that knew an obstacle was just something to over- come.” Dr. McNeil, who has no doubt seen some fine ath- letes come through Mon- mouth University during her career, had nothing but praise for Rampone. “You are the best Hawk we have,” said McNeil in her speech. “We are just thrilled with your accomplishments for young men and women, and all the Hawks.” The U.S. Women’s Na- tional Team has two match- es in August set. On August 16, they will play Costa Rica at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and on August 19, they will play Costa Rica again at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Rampone is also currently back on the field with Sky Blue FC, which played at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University. Bridget McCann covers sports for Star News Group. Meridian honors World Cup champ Christie Rampone HONORED FROM PAGE 33 backseat but this year Hurley decided to indulge in the pas- sion he had known for all his life. He hired a trainer and worked on getting back into shape in order to compete in the 2015 Laser Master’s World Championships. As of July 2015, Hurley had slimmed down to 187 pounds and made the trip to Kingston, Ontario in Canada for the event. The seven-day schedule included one layday and one day when the wind was too light for racing but still featured 12 races. Hurley competed in the 45- 54 year old age group in the Laser Standard Master Divi- sion where he took second place out of 50 competitors with 41 points. Hurley fin- ished behind Australia’s Brett Beyer and ahead of the Do- minican Republic’s Ari Barshi. “In the sport itself there is a lot of camaraderie,” Hurley said about the competition. “Out on the water though it is fierce competition.” Midway through the event Hurley was sitting in fifth place and managed his way into third. “Going into the last day I was in second,” stated Hurley. He had to beat one competi- tor to remain in second and Hurley did just that. Hurley sails a Laser Class sailboat, a popular single- handed dinghy. According to Hurley the Laser Class is, “The most competitive sin- gle-handed class in the world.” His second place finish is impressive considering his time away from the sport. The best part is that Hurley was not done competing after the Worlds came to a close. This past week he trudged back down south to Brant Beach for the 2015 U.S. Na- tionals. With 95 points, Hur- ley finished sixth in the USS- M division and first in the Master division. There were 12 total races and he finished first in the second and tenth races. Hurley has no plans to stop sailing now that he is back in shape and enjoying the thrill of competition again. He says he was happy to have his family there to support him and appreciates way back in the day when his father first introduced him to the sport. His career in portrait pho- tography and the many places he has traveled to thus far stem from sailing and Hurley would not have it any other way. “I still can’t believe I was able to get in shape, jump back in the boat and perform at a competitive level after all these years,” he said. “It’s been an amazing summer and makes me realize I’ve got a lot more years of Laser sail- ing ahead of me.” Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. While the fishermen were enjoying themselves out on the water our members were sweltering in the heat either at the weight stations waiting for the fishermen to return or back at the Lodge preparing for the picnic later in the day. The Fluke Tournament Committee would like to thank all of the members of our Lodge that came out on both Friday for the Captains Meeting and Saturday for the Tournament to man the grills, beer truck, bar, and anything else that had to be done. Also, all of the mem- bers that were there all dur- ing the week to help in the setup. Special thanks to the Veterans Committee for run- ning the 50/50 and the Special Needs Committee for running the Calcutta.” Big bluefish made a reap- pearance this past weekend as party boats reported excellent catches in the area of the Mud Buoy. The blues were aggressive and were hitting jigs. Fish were between 6-15 pounds. On the inshore grounds the bluefin tuna bite has heated up but for the recre- ational boater it’s a long ride to get to this fish. The tuna are in the area of the Bacardi about 65 miles out and east of there. There have also been a few yellowfin caught in the same area. The bluefin are running up to 125 pounds. Bob over at Fishermen’s Den in Belmar reports “It was a decent weekend for fishermen as several good fluke were taken on our rental boats and party boats out of Belmar. Some very large blues were taken on the Miss Belmar and Golden Eagle including a 24 pound brute we weighed in off the boats. The numbers of fish however are not what we would like but it gets better every day. The offshore guys out of our marina also did well. The largest tuna was a 140 pound yellowfin taken by Lou, a shop regular.” The Manasquan River Marlin and Tuna Club will be holding the 35th annual Offshore Open August 29th through September 5th. The captain’s meeting will be held at the host marina Crystal Point on Friday August 28 at 6:30 p.m. Weigh- ins are nightly at Brielle Yacht Club in Brielle. The tournament provides anglers with the opportunity to fish two separate days or one overnighter during the course of the week. Once again, the Ray Catena Auto Group is the presenting sponsor and has offered the Ray Catena Audi Challenge-a $4,000 cash award to the largest yellowfin. This is in addition to the Comstock challenge, awarding $4,000 to the largest longfin. These awards are included in the base entry. The tournament offers Calcuttas for every eli- gible specie with this year’s estimated payout to exceed $175,000. Last year’s tourna- ment paid over $165,000 to the winners and raised funds for numerous fishing and conservation related chari- ties, including the RFA, RFA- N.J., the Catch a Dream Foundation, Menhaden Defenders, Re-Clam the Bay, N.J. Beach Buggy Association and the George Burlew Scholarship Fund, providing scholarships to marine biolo- gy graduate students. The base entry fee is still $500 which provides tickets to the captain’s meeting, awards dinner and the entry for the tuna category. The all-in Calcutta fee is $3,200. Go to www.mrmtc.com/offshore- open for further details.” Captain Howard Bogan of the Big Jamaica out of Brielle reports “The Big Jamaica is scheduled to sail every day at 7:30 a.m. Night trips will sail Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. We also have space available for the Family fun trips sail- ing 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. THE OCEAN STAR It’s coming soon to Bay Head, Belmar’s sessions for students and seniors just end- ed their seasons and outdoor courts are being built in Brick — but it’s being played in- doors this summer in Point Pleasant Beach. Residents of the area are welcome to try pickleball be- tween 9 and 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the G. Harold Antrim School gym. The Point Pleasant Beach Recreation Department is providing two courts and all necessary equipment this summer. There is no fee or pre-registration required. Wear sneakers and join in. Pickleball is somewhat like tennis, but it is played on a smaller court so it is not as strenuous. The ball is similar to a plastic Wiffle ball. The paddle looks like a bigger ver- sion of a ping pong paddle. The up-and-coming sport is popular in senior commu- nities across the nation, and it is being taught in some Shore primary and secondary schools’ physical education classes. Men and women can be equally adept at it, and mixed-doubles is the usual game at the Antrim School. Pickleball is described as free fun, healthy exercise and friendly competition. Area residents are welcome to drop in any Tuesday or Thursday morning. Experi- enced players are happy to teach beginners the sport they enjoy. The Antrim School is at the corner of Cooks Lane and Niblick Street behind the Point Pleasant train station. Use the double doors behind the staff parking lot.
