2. The Haagsche Schoolvereeniging (HSV) is a Dutch International Primary
School in the heart of the International City of The Hague.
Our location on the Koningin Sophiestraat (KSS) is situated in a
picturesque part of the city where neat modern high rise buildings cast
handsome shadows over the crisp leafy suburbs that cradle our spacious
setting. This quieter and more residential part of town is only a ten minute
walk from the Central Station and is adjacent to Koningin Sophiepark.
Constructed in the 1920’s and then newly renovated in 1999, our Kon-
ingin Sophiestraat site exudes a warm, welcoming and truly international
atmosphere. The school contains many period features and houses just
seven international classes that are spread over four floors.
Our school also shares a playground with The Lighthouse School for
Special Education. Children from The Lighthouse have the opportunity to
integrate with classes from the International Department as appropriate.
In some cases Lighthouse students follow the mainstream curriculum,
supported one-to-one by Lighthouse staff.
About the School
6. Music Class Gym Class
Our gym classes involves a variety of different sports and activities for the kids
to enjoy. For example today we joined ID2 as they tackled a challenging assault
course assembled by our temporary PE teacher intern.
After a short introduction the class took turns in attempting the set of obsticles
set out before them. Amongst these activities was a class favourite, the trapeze.
“I enjoyed swinging on the ropes!
It was high and felt like I was flying.”
Music class at KSS is a fun activity for our children. Singing lessons are carefully
structured and can help to build key musical skills such as; listening, singing in
tune and inner hearing. Music also teaches pulse, rhythm, ptich, loudness and
speed. Taught in this way, KSS’s music class aims to build children’s motivation,
enthusiasm and confidence, laying formative foundations for a lifetime of
enjoyment.
“I really enjoy music call! My favourite
instrument is the piano and I’ve been
playing it for 4 years.”
9. Lighthouse School Handicraft Class
Today in Handicraft class, ID6 built their own characters from clay. The concept
was to create a ‘friendship circle’ that utilised family and friends.
Handicraft allows our children to explore ideas or concepts and then express
them by making something to keep, entertain others with, or simply look at for
visual pleasure. Emil, who is also from ID6 created this painted influenced by his
favourite artist, Gerhard Ricter.
“My favourite artist is Gerhard
Ricter, I like his random style of
painting!”
Since its original conceptionin
2000, the Lighthouse Special
Education School has catered
for international school
children aged from 3 to 13
who have individual special
needs. As the only
independant special needs
school in the Netherlands, the
Lighthouse prides itself on
providing its children with a
safe and stimulating
environment; continually to
meet the needs of the
children through intergration
into classes at KSS.
The intergration at KSS is an
important development tool
as it provides our children
with individual development
strategies that can also them
to overcome the stigmatism of
having a learning disability.
12. Community Children’s Corner
True love is purely from your
heart, can’t be stopped by
anything except your own
emotions. Love is the only
feeling that can overcome evil
and greed. Love is beautiful,
pure and true. It is the only
thing like itself in the world and
universe and beyond. There
never was and never will be
anything like it.
