Civic Reflection
Civics is a Grade 10 course where students learn about our political system, how public decisions are made, and the entitled rights and responsibility
for a citizen who legally belongs to a country. In a course like civics, students critically investigate local, national, and worldwide issues with a
political perspective. One aspect of the curriculum is personal action on civic issues, by which means students are to analyze a civic issue and develop
an action plan to address it. Through this, our class worked with an organization named DILA (A Day of Information for a Lifetime of Action), an
organization that aims towards engaging youth in Ottawa by encouraging hands–on engagement in their communities, addressing civic issues that
individuals are passionate towards, and to increase the importance of the democratic decision–making process. A DILA project main objective is to
simply empower the young millennials, by giving them a chance to let their ideas, imagination, and voice shine. The planning process began with our
DILA facilitators, by brainstorming a variety of topics and issues that grind our gear. In classroom discussions, students used their political inquiry
and presented topics with informed opinions regarding civic issues that we would like to address and make a difference in. Next, we were to select
our top three civic issues, via participating in the decision–making process, making an educated vote, and expanding upon why we individually side

At the beginning of this course I wasn't sure what was meant by social responsibility and civic engagement. During this course I realized the meaning
of both and the responsibilities that both imply. A definition of social responsibility that I found particularly poignant and concise comes from
Entrepreneur Magazine, "Acting with concern and sensitivity, aware of the impact of your actions on others, particularly the disadvantaged"

I grew up in an environment where I was sensitive to the needs of those immediately around me; my family, my neighbors, my classmates but my
world was a very narrow one. This course has taught be to look at the world as my neighbors and feel a responsibility to the health, safety and
welfare of all. I used to believe there was nothing I could do about the famine in Africa or the genocide in Croatia but I now realize that ANY small
step I take is a step toward a path leading to action and understanding. One of my closest friends is a Major in the U.S. Army and she has been to
Croatia, Iraq and Afghanistan; I am blessed to have her in my life because through her eyes and her stories, I am more in touch with the trials of our
modern day world. "Lao Tzu said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" (Loeb, 2010).
My opinions on specific topics have also evolved throughout this course. For example: my group project group chose to tackle the issue of capital
punishment. "What goes around comes around. Or does it? I believe my awareness of this issue started when the five of us decided which side, pro or
con, we were going to speak for. Originally we had four for pro and only one for con. Well, this was not going to be a balanced paper obviously so I
said I would join the con side. Therefore, I had to research a view that I previously had discounted.

A civic duty is an action that each citizen owes to their nation, Even if its participating in voting, abiding the nations law, paying the nations tax's for
help in the community public services, being in the military as I know that women can sign up to serve their country, and serving on our nations

When a person is born in the United States of America they are automatically a citizen of the United States. With this title comes responsibility. When
a person is a citizen there are certain things that are required from them. The person has civic duty that consists of voting, politics, being in a
community and the legal realm. Catholic Social Teaching also explains how important civic responsibility is. Civic duty is an important part of being

What Is Voting A Civic Duty
A great amount of people have no clue how the voting process including myself. Not many know any knowledge about the information the candidate
is giving. Some even believe that is not a civic duty for the common people to vote without the information. Our Caesar Campaign helped me realize
that the voting process can be difficult for some people. Public relations can assure others who don't know what they are being presented.

Community life and civic engagement are a huge responsibility of citizens, although it is not required by citizens, it is an important aspect of a
proper citizen. Residents of a community have the constant responsibility of making the society around them reflect an advance in the eminence of
lives in the community. The simple duty of any citizen is to give to the common good. Civic responsibilities are achieved by volunteering and
choice. Volunteering, involving in positive organizations and aids, or tutoring people in certain subjects, are all ways that people can subsidize to the

Civic Responsibility For Homeless Students
Our main goal for this project was to develop an understanding of homelessness (for students,) including the reasons for the increase in homelessness
over the past decades and the policy tools that exist to end homelessness. We wanted to foster empathy and a sense of justice within the youth regarding

This course has made me well versed in the teaching modules needed to become an effective teacher in the twenty–first century.Teachers have dual

In an era of political depression and high voter suppression, civic education is critical for the advancement of the United States. A civil society is
rooted in civic education. Stated directly in the declaration of independence is the three unalienable rights the government cannot strip you of: life,

Civic Responsibility Project
For my Civic Responsibility Project, I chose to volunteer at Paws Humane, a non–profit organization in Columbus that provides shelter for homeless
pets and aides in placing them with a fit owner. Paws rescues captured strays from Animal Control and accepts owner–surrendered animals. The
accepted animals range from dogs and cats of all ages to small critters, such as rabbits. Paws has a no–kill policy, so the animals not adopted remain at
the shelter until they finally find a home. Unfortunately, some animals remain at the shelter longer than others; some have been at the shelter 300+

The process is very organized and easy to learn. My volunteer time is not scheduled; I could come and go as I please as long as they were open.
This was perfect for me because I have a very busy schedule and could squeeze in volunteer time when I could. Tasks are not assigned, so I could
go in and do what I want. Many of the dogs that I visited were extremely sweet and just wanted someone to love on them. I loved going into their
room or area to sit and cuddle with them. Many enjoyed having a long belly rub, and some took naps in my lap. Other dogs were really excited to
get out and play, and I enjoyed throwing the tennis ball around in the play yard for them. There is a short trail through the woods in front of the
building, and most of the dogs love walking up and down it, so I would take them through there, too. I went to Paws one day and brought one of
the running buddy dogs, Belle, to campus during lunch hour. My friends enjoyed playing with her, and she loved being out of the building in a new
place. We took a walk around campus, and when I took her back to Paws, she was exhausted but so happy from all the fun she had. Another great

As young American adults turn eighteen, they are reminded that it is their civic duty and responsibility to register to vote, to be aware of the current
policies and to make educated decisions in the voting booth. As some of these young adults become active in the nursing profession, they are taught
that their ultimate responsibility is to advocate for their patients; they are to ensure their safety and well–being. That being said, does this responsibility
stop at the bedside? Should nurses take an active role in the policy making that directly affects the healthcare of their patients? Conn and Armer (2012)
stated that "nurses must be prepared to use multiple and varied strategies to influence public policy so that optimal health outcomes can be achieved"

Astuteness Inventory" and was quite surprised at my score, for I could only honestly check mark 17 of the 34 statements. My 17 checkmarks are
