JAZZ music roots deeply lies in Negro folk singing. They play
different songs with the help of crude instruments and different
voices like songs of work, play, hope, peddlers crying , Sabbath
praise and many more they adopt their culture and also rhythms
from African heritage too, as they were familiar of drumming styles.
different styles of music and different musical instruments were
used in that era. Ragtime ,marches, blues, brass brand were the
latest styles of music. Early musician also used different voices but
unfamiliar with the word jazz. Jazz was one latest type of music
and a profound expression of the Negro soul.
*We are thankful to our respected
teacher Mrs.UZMA ARSHAD who

project.
*All praises and Thanks to
Almighty Allah. He is the most
Merciful who best owed us the
potential, ability and opportunity
to work on this project.
WE DEDICATE THIS PROJECT TO OUR
RESPECTED
ENGLISH TEACHER MAM.UZMA ARSHAD AND
TO OUR CLASS.
The Author MR.DENNIS AKSEY introduced this topic
to us. He was born in Texas had many experience as
a publisher and as a magazine editor. His enthusiastic
interest in the most distinctively American music
marks him as a “jazz buff” .In the easy , He explains
the early origins of jazz and defines its special musical
qualities. He was very fond of jazz music and with
all His knowledge he let us knows its beginning and
its importance with the passage of time.
JAZZ is the type of music which begin with the negro
folk songs .Negro culture is the origin of jazz in the
music world. They used different music instrument
which is made of boxes, barrels and brooms. They also
used horns to play different sounds. Songs are normally
related to their culture, calling one and other names,
Sabbath praise ..As they were unfamiliar of the music
rules so they are not capable of introducing any musical
instruments and use of it. Louis Armstrong (An
American Negro musician ) bring revolution by
introducing a new instrument trumpet instead of
The Negro voices were his principal meaning of musical
expression. Songs of work, play , trouble, hope, rose on
rich peddlers crying their wares to the countryside,
from work gangs on the railroads, from families
gathered at the day end to sing away their weariness,
churches singing with the sound of Sabbath
praise. These all were the
voices of Negro musicians
and they play it with the
help of horns.
Negro folk, African musician and all the early musicians
used different voices like: church hymns, polkas, folk songs,
marches, songs of hope, work, play, trouble, ragtime ,blues
even sound of railroad enter into their music. The mixture
of these voices resulted a musical hybrid—a
mixture that was vigorous, native and
unmistakably new.
There were many different styles used in that era. First,
music style of the Negro music was the sound they play and
transferred to the horns. Trumpet was then new addition to it.
Then, the Negro adopt African culture drumming style. Their
jazz music got most by the ragtime, blues, marches and brass
brand. Every music has it own significant some carry sad
poetry, some carry joy of happiness, some are for relief , some
are to cry.
Drums are the member of percussion group of Musical
instrument. Negro build much of their music over the
rhythms of African drums. As drumming style is Ghana
tradition in Africa. The drum is the oldest known
instrument in the world dating back to 4000 BC in
Egypt in the northeast corner of Africa. It is present
throughout every region of Africa playing different roles
amongst the various peoples.
Blues is a genreand musical form that originated in
African and American communities in the deep South
of the United States around the end of the 19th century.
The genre is a fusion of traditional African music and
European folk music. The blues were basically vocal music,
requiring no accompaniment than a guitar or a harmonica,
and they spoke a language of song which
the Negro already understood.
A march, as a musical genre, is
a piece of music with a strong
regular rhythm which in origin
was expressly written for
marching to and most
frequently performed by a
military band.
Ragtime was essentially a piano music,
It is a musical genre that enjoyed its peak
popularity between 1895 and 1918. It
was also a modification of the march.
Ragtime originated in African American
music in the late 19th century and
descended from the jigs and march music
played by African and American referred
to as "jig piano" or "piano thumping.
The crudeness disappeared from the
playing of brass brand, and these too
become popular fixture in the
community life of southern Negro the
bandsmen were called upon to play at all
sorts of social events. They played for
dances, weddings, picnics, parades, or
sometimes simply for sheer of love of
hearing the new voices that their horns
gave them.

Jazz begin its journey from the Negro folk . It never be
remain the only part of it. African heritage included in it
and gradually with the passage of time poured into marches,
ragtime, blues and last but never least to remove all the
crudeness take a shape of brass brand. Jazz become so much
popular and one of the famous part of music till known and
enjoyed by everyone, but it always represent the expression
of Negro soul.
