India has significant coal reserves, estimated at over 352 billion tonnes as of 2021. The majority of reserves are located in eastern India and produced by Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries. CIL accounts for over 80% of domestic coal production. While demand is increasing, India's reserves are sufficient to meet demand for many decades at current production rates given ongoing exploration and additions of over 4 billion tonnes per year. Globally, China has the largest proven coal reserves followed by the United States, Russia, and Australia which also have major coal industries and exports.
3. • As per the Inventory of India published by GSI for Coal and Lignite as,
on 01.04.2021, the total assessed geological coal resource is 352125.97
million tonnes.
• The cumulative coal production since 1950 up to 2020-21 is 17,297.94
million tonnes as per Coal Controller, Ministry of Coal, Government of
India.
• As per the present rate of demand/consumption of coal, there are
sufficient resources for coal in India. Every year CMPDI is adding about
4000-6000 MT of proved resources to the coal inventory of India. There is
no threat to coal resources for future coal demand in our country at the
present rate of extraction/demand.
4. • COAL RESERVES
• As a result of exploration carried out up to the maximum depth of 1200m by the GSI,
CMPDI, SCCL, and MECL etc., a cumulative total of 319.02 Billion tonnes of
Geological Resources of Coal have so far been estimated in the country as on
1.4.2018. The details of state-wise geological resources of Coal are given as under:
(Million tonnes)
10. Coal Reserves and Resources of CIL:
As of April 1, 2010, we had total coal resources of 64,786 million tons, comprising, pursuant of ISP
classifications, Proved Geological Reserves of 52,546 million tons, Indicated Geological Reserves of 10,298
million tons and Inferred Geological Reserves of 1,942 million tons. As of April 1, 2010, from our total coal
resources of 64,786 million tons, 30,356 million tons had been considered for mining studies (mine planning
and feasibility studies), and the remaining coal resources of 34,430 million tons had not yet been considered for
such mining studies. From the 30,356 million tons of coal resources that had been considered for mining studies
as of April 1, 2010, 21,754 million tons has been estimated as our Extractable Reserves.
NLC:
NLCIL is entering into coal mine projects and has commenced coal production in Talabira-
II & III Coal Mine (20 MTPA) in Odisha on 26.04.2020.
Now the mine is selling G14 grade coal to Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited from November
2020. In addition, project activities are in full swing at Pachwara South Coal Mine (9
MTPA) in Jharkhand with anticipated commissioning by 2022-23.
12. COAL PRODUCTION
• Through a sustained program of investment and greater thrust on the application of modern
technologies, it has been possible to raise the All India production of coal at 716.08 million
tonnes in 2020-21 (Provisional). All India’s Production of coal during 2021-22 was 777.31
MT (Provisional) with a positive growth of 8.55%.
• Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries accounted for 596.219 million tonnes
during 2020-21 as compared to the production of 602.129 million tonnes in 2019-
20 showing negative growth of 0.98%. Coal production of CIL during 2021-
22 was 622.640 MT(Provisional) with a positive growth of 4.43%.
• Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is the main source of supply of coal to the
southern region. The company produced 50.580 million tonnes of coal during 2020-21 as
against 64.044 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year. SCCL production
of coal during 2021-22 was 65.021 MT(Provisional) with a positive growth
of 28.55%. Small quantities of coal are also produced by TISCO, IISCO, DVC, and
others.
15. China holds 149,818 million tons (MMst) of proven coal reserves as of 2016,
ranking 4th in the world and accounting for about 13% of the world's total coal reserves
of 1,139,471 million tons (MMst).
Total U.S. recoverable coal reserves that are technologically and economically feasible
to extract as reported by producers fell to 13,201 MMst (million tons)at the end of 2020
from 14,151 MMst at the end of 2019.
At the end of 2019, Australia’s recoverable Economic Demonstrated
Resources were 75,428 million tonnes (Mt) of black coal and 73,865 Mt of
brown coal.
Australia is currently the fifth largest producer and the second largest
exporter of coal and has the third largest reserves of coal in the world.
