2. MEANING
Linking words, also known as
"connectors" are words that link or relate
two ideas within a sentence (connecting
two clauses) or within a paragraph
(connecting two sentences).
We have already introduced this
concept in a previous lesson
Conjunctions, now we go further into
them.
3. The linking words or connectors, have
several functions, such as contrast
information, make comparisons, add
information or give reasons or explanations. If
we use these words incorrectly we can
completely change the meaning of the phrase
and can cause confusion. Therefore, it is
important to have a good understanding of
the different meanings and uses of these
words. By using linking words we improve
English proficiency as they allow us to
express a more complex way. The following
lessons provide an explanation of the various
functions to relate words and grammatical
rules for use.
4. THE FOLLOWING LIST INCLUDES
LINKING WORDS THAT ARE USED TO
ADD OR PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION.
5. AND
This linking is the most common word to add information.
"And" it is used in sentences, often separated by commas
lists, although never a comma is used before or after
"and".
Example: He loves sport. He plays football, basketball and
tennis. (Le encanta el deporte. Juega a fútbol, baloncesto
y tenis.)
ALSO
it is used between the subject and the verb to give
additional information or for emphasis.
Example: I Also likes to ski. (He also likes skiing.)
6. IN ADDITION:
If you want to start a sentence with a connector can
use 'in Addition' ( 'plus'), which always used to start
phrase. Remember that it is always followed by a
comma.
Example: He likes football. She also likes tennis.
AS WELL AS
This linking word translated as 'plus' in Spanish, can
be used at the beginning or in the middle of a
sentence.
Example: I plays football as well as basketball. (Play
football plus basketball.)
7. TOO
"Too" can be found at the end of a sentence or
between subject and verb; It means 'also'.
Example: I plays tennis too. (Play tennis too.)
ALTHOUGH:
we can also use ', Although' that is not followed by
coma and can go to the beginning or in the middle
of the sentence.
Example: Although he likes football, he does not
like tennis.
8. SO:
This connector is used to talk about the
result, and is often used phrase in the
middle.
Example: He likes soccer, so was the
match.
BECAUSE:
This connector indicates why we have done
something.
Example:It was the party because he likes
football.
9. FOR EXAMPLE:
The most common way of giving examples
is by using “for example”
Example: (He’s always being thoughtful.
For example, he bought her flower as a
surprise)
BUT - I like to play tennis today, but my
arm hurts
HOWEVER - In your family all are high,
however, it is low
10. DUE:
