Editor's Notes
I arrived at this decision to become an advertising media manager by taking an assessment of all of my natural abilities, proven skills and creative achievements. I have long been fascinated with news, media, art, film and technology, where this vocation would fit my interests and personality perfectly. Moving throughout the presentation the following subjects will be discussed:
Mission Statement
SWOT Analysis
Goal Planning
Action Plan
Academic Resources
Role Models & Mentors
The following is my personal mission statement of intent… “Combining an undergraduate degree in game design and development, a graduate degree in marketing new media communications, a passion for technically creative writing and design, and a lifelong interest with news, media and technology, it is my personal mission within the next two years to pursue a career as an advertising media manager working for a game design technology company in the highly creative broadcast media commercial advertising industry.”
As indicated in this graphic, I have a strong sense of my strengths, weaknesses, as well as, what I might expect to encounter in my journey towards my goal of a new career as an advertising media manager. Fortunately, I have been working for almost forty years now and have experienced most of the points indicated in this graphic, and how I intend to overcome the negative points to be able to enjoy a level of success in this new career. I am confident I will succeed.
I’m currently only a third of the way through my masters degree where I still have time to seek out either entry-level positions or paid internships to provide me with the practical experience necessary for my future career. This is also a good time to expand upon my already existing portfolio, while I’m completing my masters degree.
My graduation date of May 2018 seems a long time from now, but those two years will fly by! Beginning now I will be applying for submission for entry-level positions in advertising & marketing, with a clear emphasis starting out in advertising copy writing. This will take some time, so in the interim I will need to canvass what is available on the Internet in terms of tutorials for anything creative to be able to expand upon my existing portfolio I have posted on my LinkedIn profile, along with some structured and equally creative training courses.
I found the Advertising Educational Foundation has a list of various advertising association affiliations for a multitude of different advertising mediums from digital to broadcast media, as well as advertising affiliations, foundations, research centers and media centers, such as the renown Paley Center for Media (AEF, 2016).
But, I felt particularly interested in the global digital and interactive advertising association organization, Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) that was founded as an online medium advertising industry in 1996, which is currently represented in four continents and five countries of Asia, Canada, Europe, Latin America and the United States. (AEF, 2016).
IAB encourages the collaboration of media and marketing in the digital economy to develop standards, best practices and research for interactive advertising. They also educate brands, agencies and businesses on digital media and its importance. They are headquartered in New York City and San Francisco (IAB, 2016).
My role model for many years was author and screen writer Nora Ephron, and as an undergrad I aspired to becoming a screenwriter. But, with twenty years of invested technology experience and my renewed interest in media, I believe I would be better suited working, writing and creating for media advertising platforms. Therefore, I am in unchartered territory in finding a new role model to fit within my new career aspirations of becoming an advertising media manager.
I didn’t think that would be very difficult to do until I began looking at all of the successful women in advertising today. So, instead of seeking a person I chose to look into CBS interactive media, because of their technologically progressive advancements with media, and surprisingly I found someone outstanding, I just never thought that I would look at a role model that was younger than I was. When you think of role model, older individuals come to mind, as to be able to walk in their footsteps. But, Emily Christner’s brief fifteen-year career has been incredibly impressive as Vice President and General Manager of Marketing at TV Guide, TV.com and Metacritic which are part of CBS Interactive’s Media Group, who was promoted into her position in early 2011.
Emily has filled many roles in her fifteen-year career including consumer audience growth of TVGuide.com and TV Guide mobile and new product launches, social media, market research and analytics, where she has transformed both the brand and independent digital entities, including social TV and personalization promotions. She oversees audience research and analytics to increase viewership and mobile App downloads (New York, 2015).
Prior to TVGuide.com and after graduating from Boston College with her BA and MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business, Emily worked for five years for the Boston Bruins Hockey team, where she was responsible for online marketing for both BostonBruins.com and FleetCenter.com, in which she developed online fan communities, worked in ticket promotions, was responsible for email marketing, and client sponsorship execution (PopTV, 2011)
What attracted me the most is her experience with marketing, advertising, social media and media. Since media and social media are emerging media technologies that are developing mobile media technologies, she’s just the forward and progressive thinking person I will want to be watching over the next few years.
No one has inspired me more than my undergraduate academic advisor Renee Austin-Arena. We still speak occasionally and she is someone who gives me hope, keeps me on track both academically and personally and who I heavily rely on for direction and guidance.
I hope to incorporate all of my interests and talents including my creative writing skills to apply in my new vocation. I have long written in many varied capacities, such as journalism, copywriting, advertising copy writing, screenwriting, scriptwriting, playwriting, storytelling, technical writing, instructional writing and web content writing. But, I also really have a well developed talent for visual arts and photography. I have also created 3D digital images, as well. All of which I hope to apply towards my dream job.
Going forward I would like to continue working within the technology industry, where I have invested so much of my time and effort these past twenty years, and I would like to work in an advertising or marketing department developing content and copy for new products. That would be the ideal position to blend my tech knowledge and varied creative skills together, in what I hope to be my final career.
