The Green Leaf Foundation was established in 1998 with a vision of promoting environmental awareness in the tourism industry. It aims to certify hotels based on their environmental practices and management across criteria like waste management, energy and water efficiency, and environmental protection. Over 80 Thai hotels have received the Green Leaf Certificate, and the foundation organizes annual seminars attended by over 1,000 hotels to discuss sustainability in the industry. While some hotels have made efforts to improve, stronger laws and enforcement are still needed as traditional hotels can negatively impact the environment through resource exploitation, pollution, and destruction of local ecosystems if precautions are not taken.
