INTRODUCTION
This report documents the work done during the summer training at Delhi Metro
Rail Corporation Limited, Places is Yamuna Bank metro Depot,Shastri Park
Metro Depot, Shivaji Stadium, Delhi under the guidance of Mr. Chandan Deep
Singh, Mr. I.P Singh etc . The report first shall give the overview of Track
Department during the period of training.
Report shall also elaborate about the concept of P-way Department and Works
Department.
I have tried my best to keep the report simple yet technically correct. I hope I
succeed in my attempt.
PERMANENT WAY(P-WAY) Department
Track Department
 Ballast:- Ballast is coarse aggregate used in the railway tracks for
giving the strength and stability to the tracks .
 Types of Ballast
1) Crib Ballast:- Crib ballasts are provided in between the sleepers for no lateral movement in
them .
2) Shoulder ballasts:- Shoulder ballasts are provided for no sideways movements . Above the
sleepers ( top level of sleeper ) 100 mm above .
 Ballasts Sizes:- They are of sizes 65, 40 20 mm . They are separated by doing sieve analysis .
 Sleeper:- The horizontal supports which lie underneath the rails, helping hold them in place.
 Sleeper Dimensions:- 2700mm long and 135mm height . Its shape is trapezoidal whose top is
of 120mm and base is 270 mm.
P-WAY Continue.
 Types of Track:-
1). Ballasted Track : are those which are made of ballast
Fitting : ERC ( ELASTIC RAIL CLIP) MK lll / pantrol made of silica , magnese spring steel
with defection of 13.5 mm and dia of 20.5 mm.It’s weight is 910 gram.
2). Ballastless Track : Made of cement concrete.
Tension clamp (SKL XII) : Tow load of 11-14 N/m .
Track Machines
 Track machines are mainly used for the maintenance of the track system
 Maintenance are of 2 types:-
1).Preventive
2). Corrective
 The two types of machines found in Delhi metro which are :
1). RGM( Rail Grinding Machine) :- 2 Numbers ,RGM In Rail Grinding we have to
maintain a optimum point between the tracks and the wheels of the trains .
Track Machines Continue..
 The machines used for maintaining the rail profile .They are used to grind the
rail heads when there is some type of corrosion, cracks and corrogations .
 Rail grinding machine is made in USA and brought in India by importing with
the cost of 41 crores . Name of the company which manufactures it is LORAM.
 There are 2 types of machines in RGM
a.) LRG -18 bought in 2010 for broad gauge tracks . Can also be used in standard
gauge .
b.) LRG -30 bought in 2018 for standard gauge tracks * The RGM has 3 parts :
Power cart , Grind Cart -1 and Grind.
2).TTM:- Track Tamping Machine (1 in number )
 Tracks Tamping Machines (TTM) are used to remove the cant , the lining or
deflection and for doing the levelling of the tracks if the tracks goes deep air
high .
 TTM is manufactured in Australia by the company Plasser and Theurer.
Track Machines Continue..
 There are 3 parts :
1). Recording part:- This part in the machine is used to record the work done by
the TTM at the sites .
2). Directioning Part:-This part is used to give the direction to the machine that
where the tracks are to be mended
3).Working part :- This part do all the work at the site with great accuracy. The
machine can lift the tracks by magnets and also do tamping and grinding work for
the rails .890 litres of diesel is used in TTM . The max. Speed of TTM is 80km/hr
Continue...
 Trap Point is given for derailment of the train if it becomes unstable . In
depot lines the speed of the trains should be 25 kilometres per hour. And in
the main lines the trains have 80,90 kmph and in airport lines speed is 100
kmph .
 Broad Gauge are used in Red , Yellow , and Blue lines . The length of these
tracks are 1676 mm .
 Standard Gauge are used in Pink, Magenta , Airport lines , Green lines . The
length of these tracks are 1435 mm
Maintenance, Works, And Bridge
 The tact tiles place were changing as the train coaches were change from 6
to 8 coaches .Generally the tact tiles are used for the blind persons by which
they can reach to the 1st coach of the train.
 Flyovers are constructed to overcome the traffics of red lights , road
crossings, etc .
 Bridges are constructed on rivers and valleys to cross easily over them
 Underpasses are made because they are economical.
RO PLANT
 RO plant was shown to used at the metro quarters.
 The tank of 20000 litres was there which was filled by the borewell water .
 Then the water goes to the MGF (Multi Grade Filter) and ACF (Activated
Carbon Filter) filter tanks .
 And after passing through the media filters the water goes to the 3000 LPH
RO for chlorination of the water to make
 It fit for drinking and the waste water goes to the 1000
 LPH RO for some more filteration .
 In the the rejected water is used for the horticulture or watering the parks
The treated water is sent to the water tanks for the regular use of the
families through the shafts .
Waterproofing
 Waterproofing was done on the terrace of the Dwarka (sector-8) depot by
filling the grooves on the terrace by cement. And then applying the chemicals
and fibre membrane for proper waterproofing on the terrace
STP ( Sewage Treatment Plant )
 The STP ( Sewage Treatment Plant ) was shown where the waste water from
the buildings come and treated for the horticulture.
 A STP ( Sewage Treatment Plant ) has following components and uses :
1).Collecting duct where the waste water and sludge gets collected . Air blower
is switched on for the mixing of the waster and sludge before moving it to the
RH1 tank.
2). In RH1 tank the sludge is settled down because of the media present inside it
.
3). Then by a hole at the top of the RH1 tank the water and remaining sludge (
small particles) are moved into the RH2 tank .
4).In RH2 tank there are media present in them to hold the sludge.
5). Then it is gone into the tube settler in which the sludge is moved out to the
SLUDGE tank
6).The water is collected and then the chlorination occurs through the ACF and
MGF and the fully treated water is used in the horticulture activities .
 There are two types of buildings in metro :
1. Axillary building where the transformer transfers the electricity to the metro
station .
2. Anxillary building where the water tanks of 100000 litres is there for the
firemen use and for the air conditioners in the underground metro stations . The
water used in the air conditioners is softed by chlorination and passing through
the media filters ACF AND MGF .
OVERVIEW OF BRIDGES
 Viaducts are made in the elevated stations with regular interval of piers.
They are made between two stations .
 viaduct has followings parts :
1). Pile / Well Foundation at the height of 25,30 or 35 metres
as per bearing capacity of the soil. The piles are friction piles .
2). Pile caps till the plinth .
3).After the coming to the ground level we make the piers and then the pier caps
are made.
4). Then pedestal are made on the pier cap.
5). And at last the bearings are given on the pedestals.
 Now the there are 2 more types of bridges :
1). Steel Bridge:-
a).Made by Plate Girders
b).Open Web Girders or Triangulated Girder.
I . Underslung bridge
II. Through Bridges
III. Semi Through Bridge
 Post Stressed Concrete Girders :
a). Segmental Box Girders : They are connected by strands together.
b). I – section Girders
c). U – types Girders or Twin U – type Girders
d). CLC Span – Continuous Cantilever Spans which are made on the signals
TYPES OF BEARINGS FITTING ON THE
VIADUCTS :
1). POT/ PTFE ( POLY TETRA FLORO ETHYLENE ) it consists of a plate of highly
polished stainless steel on top and then the PTFE is layer.
2). ELASTOMERIC BEARINGS which have many layers of steels reinforced in them
with a elastomeric pad on top .
3). Seismic Arresters are used in the viaducts for the protection the Girders so
that the Girders don’t become unstable during the earthquake. It is given
vertically.
