Where Do Personality Types Come From?
The MBTI instrument is based on the work of psychologist Carl Jung and the instrument’s authors,
Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Katharine Cook Briggs, all of whom spent years observing human
behavior. Their ideas help explain why different kinds of people are interested in different things,
prefer different kinds of work, and sometimes find it hard to understand each other—all due to basic
differences in how people take in information and make decisions about it.
The MBTI instrument was developed with great care and has been used by people around the world for
more than 60 years.
• Organizations use it to improve employee communication, teamwork, and leadership.
• Adults and young people use it to choose careers that are likely to hold their interest and use their gifts.
• Teachers and students use it to make learning more interesting and efficient.
• Family members use it to better understand each other.
Isabel Briggs Myers created descriptions of each of the 16 types, including the description for your type
that is included in this report. Your Interpretive Report also provides information on why the 16 types
are different from one another and clarifies how ISTJ is distinctive from the others.
A clear understanding of the basics of personality type and type development will help you gain greater
understanding of yourself and others and the impact type has on your daily interactions.

When you completed the MBTI assessment, you made choices on four dichotomies, each of which is
made up of two opposite preferences:

Although everyone uses all eight of these preferences, people find one preference in each pair more
interesting or comfortable than its opposite. Think of your choices as somewhat like being right- or
left-handed. Both hands are valuable, but most people reach first with the hand they prefer. They usually
use that hand more often and become more skillful with it. In the same way, your type preferences are
choices between equally valuable and useful qualities.

• Quiet, serious, earn success through thoroughness and dependability
• Practical, matter-of-fact, realistic, and responsible
• Decide logically what should be done and work toward it steadily, regardless of distractions
• Take pleasure in making everything orderly and organized—their work, their home, their life
• Value traditions and loyalty
People with ISTJ preferences have a strong sense of responsibility and great loyalty to the organizations,
families, and relationships in their lives. They work with steady energy to fulfill commitments as stated
and on time. They will go to almost any trouble to complete something they see as necessary but balk at
doing anything that doesn’t make sense to them.
ISTJs generally prefer to work alone and be accountable for the results; however, they are comfortable
working in teams when it is necessary to do the job right, when roles are clearly defined, and when
people fulfill assigned responsibilities. ISTJs have a profound respect for facts. They use their Sensing
primarily internally, where they have a storehouse of information upon which they draw to understand
the present. Thus, they are likely to be practical, sensible, realistic, and systematic.
ISTJs use Thinking in decision making, taking an objective, logical, and tough-minded approach. Their
focus is on the task or system as a whole rather than on individuals. They tend to be logical, analytical,
detached, and reasonable. ISTJs are clear and steadfast in their opinions because they have arrived
at them by applying logical criteria based on their experience and knowledge. They believe standard
procedures exist because they work. ISTJs will support change only when facts demonstrate it will bring
better results.
ISTJs are sociable when comfortable in the roles they are playing; however, they generally do not share
their wealth of rich Sensing observations and memories except with close friends. Others see their
standards and judgments, their desire for structure and schedules, but may not see their individual,
sometimes humorous, private reactions. It can be hard for ISTJs to see the sense in needs that differ
widely from their own; but, once they are convinced that something matters to a person they care about,
that need becomes a fact. They will then go to generous lengths to meet the need, even while continuing
to think it doesn’t make sense. Others usually see ISTJs as calm, reserved, serious, consistent, and orderly,
and as persons who value traditions.
Sometimes life circumstances have not supported ISTJs in the development and expression of their
Thinking and Sensing preferences. If they have not developed their Thinking, ISTJs may not have
reliable ways of dealing with the world and instead may be preoccupied with their internal memories.
If they have not developed their Sensing, they may rush into premature judgments and actions without
considering new information.

Your Unique Pattern of Preferences: ISTJ
Your personality type is much more than the combination of your four individual preferences. Each
of the 16 types has its own unique pattern of preferences; this helps explain why the things that are
interesting or easy for your type are uninteresting or difficult for a different type.
The two middle letters of your four-letter type code indicate which of the four mental processes you prefer.
Everyone uses all four mental processes, but each of the 16 types has its own pattern showing which of
these is first in importance or the most preferred, the second most preferred, the third most preferred,
and the least preferred.
Sensing (S) 7 or 8 Intuition (N)
Thinking (T) 7 or 8 Feeling (F)
ISTJs like and use Sensing first and Thinking second. Their third favored process is Feeling, and their
least preferred is Intuition. Youth is the time for ISTJs to develop Sensing and Thinking. At midlife,
Feeling and Intuition often become more interesting and easier to use.
The patterns for each type also show whether the first—or most preferred—process is used mostly in the
world of people and things (in an Extraverted way) or in the inner world of ideas and impressions (in an
Introverted way). Here is how the whole pattern works for type ISTJ.

ISTJs mainly use their first or most preferred process, Sensing, in the inner world of ideas and impressions,
where it is less apparent to others. They run their outer lives with their second most preferred process,
Thinking. As a result, others may underestimate ISTJs at first because they see mostly the ISTJs’ second
favored process, rather than their first, in their outer behavior. ISTJs also use Feeling and Intuition, but not
so readily or easily as Sensing and Thinking. Intuition is the process most likely to be overlooked.
