Editor's Notes
Good afternoon! I’m Dave Copeland and today I’ll be giving you a brief overview of my project for the course.
Five guys is a fast food restaurant originally founded in Virginia in 1986. The chain opened numerous other locations in the DC Metro area, but stayed local until 2003. In 2003, Five Guys began franchising and has since opened more than 1,500 locations, including international locations. According to The LA Times, Five Guys is the fastest growing food chain in the world. Five Guys is known for only using fresh, never frozen beef, and potatoes that are only sourced from Idaho, and only from farms above the 42nd parallel. These fries are cooked in peanut oil, in contrast to the vegetable oil used by most chain restaurants. The menu is small, allowing the restaurant to focus on producing a limited number of items at high quality.
For this project, a chose a Five Guys cheeseburger, which is kind of a misnomer. Five Guys sells double patty burgers as their standard. The typical single patty burgers that are standard at other chain restaurants are referred to as ‘little’ burgers by Five Guys. Five Guys offers 15 toppings, but for this project, we will be looking at a cheeseburger with only ketchup and mustard, so as to not skew the nutritional information quoted by the company. According to the Five Guys website, the cheeseburger contains 840 Calories and 55 grams of fat, with 27 of those grams being saturated fat. The burger also boasts a whopping 165 milligrams of cholesterol and over 1,000 milligrams of sodium, while only providing two grams of dietary fiber.
For this project, I’ll be using my son as my client. He is 24 years old, 5’6” tall and weighs around 115 pounds. He is a self-admitted video game nerd and essentially abhors physical activity. His main activities consist of playing video games and watching anime. In keeping with video game nerd tradition, he consumes a diet of mostly processed food, much of it microwaveable, and consumes primarily sugary drinks. I chose my son as my client, because I have had the conversation with him about eating better and exercising, so this is familiar territory for me. Hopefully, my project will not only open his eyes to the pitfalls of poor nutrition, but also the eyes of fellow classmates. I chose this item, because it is what he usually chooses when we go to Five Guys, although he usually tries to convince me to get him a triple and I decline. That’s it for this week. Thanks for taking the time to listen to my presentation! I look forward to working with you all as we proceed through the course!
