Introduction
 The sun is a magnificent source of heat and light energy,
and solar power technology is currently finding new and
more efficient ways to harness the energy of our closest
star.
 Solar thermal systems are also widely used in the world
today for heating and electric generation.
 Finding more efficient ways to capture and use the
unbelievable amounts of energy emitted from the sun
could change the future of all energy generation in the
world.
What is Solar Power ?
 The energy that is produced from sun is known as Solar
Energy.
 Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into
electricity, either directly using photovoltaic's (PV),
indirectly using concentrated solar power, or a
combination.
 Concentrated solar power
systems uses lenses or
mirrors to focus a large
area of sunlight into a
small beam.
 Photovoltaic cells convert
light into an electric
current using the
photovoltaic effect.
Why Solar Power?
 Solar power is the cleanest, most reliable form of
renewable energy available, and it can be used in several
forms.
 It is renewable energy that will minimize the use of non-
renewable resources and reduce the hazardous effects of global
warming and pollution.
 Solar power is a clean and sustainable energy source that can
satisfy the needs of any household with a variety of
technologies, there are plenty of options for residential use of
solar energy.
Solar Turbine Generator
 Solar Turbine Generator is a device that uses steam from a
Solar Power system to convert the sun's heat into usable
electric energy.
 A solar turbine works by using concentrated solar power to
create steam. Concentrated solar power is a sunlight capturing
technique that converts the sun’s light into heat energy.
 The heat energy is then used to convert water into steam,
which can be used in a steam turbine generator to create
an electric current.
 The sunlight is converted into heat energy when the sun’s
rays are reflected off a smooth, mirrored surface towards a
heat capturing focal point.
 When this focal point is targeted by the reflected sunlight
of several mirrored surfaces, enough heat energy is created
to heat water to extreme temperatures and eventually into
steam.
The process
1. The panels with the mirrored surfaces reflect the rays
of the sun into one targeted focal point.
2. At this focal point the heat from the sun is
greatly intensified.
3. At these high temperatures the water is converted
into steam and pumped through special steam tubes
out of the reflective mirrored panel area and into a
heat exchanger.
4. The heat exchanger retrieves the steam and sets it to the
correct temperature and pressure needed for the steam
turbine generator.
5. The steam turbine generator uses the steam to create
electricity.
6. The cooled steam is then passed out of the generator,
again through the heat exchanger, converted back into
water and again pumped back towards the heated focal
point of the mirrors, and the process is repeated.
Note
 It is important to remember that a solar turbine generator
system actually uses a steam turbine generator to create
the electricity.
 The solar energy is what it used to heat water into steam.
 This process of heating using concentrated solar power is
a form of clean renewable energy.
 No pollutants are emitted during the water heating
process.
Solar Turbine Generator
Advantages
 Solar power is pollution free and causes no greenhouse
gases to be emitted after installation.
 Reduced dependence on foreign oil and fossil fuels.
 Creates jobs by employing solar panel manufacturers,
solar installers, etc. and in turn helps the economy.
 Use batteries to store extra power for use at night.
 Solar can be used to heat water, power homes and
building, even power cars.
 Solar energy is FREE, although there is a cost in building
“collectors” and other equipments required to convert
solar energy into electricity.
 Solar turbine generator has long life. And Solar energy is
renewable source ofenergy.
Disadvantages
 High initial costs for material and installation.
 No solar power at night so there is a need for a large battery
bank.
 Cloudy days do not produce much energy.
 Solar panels are not being massed produced due to lack of
material and technology to lower the cost enough to be
more affordable.
 Lower production in the winter months.
Environmental Impact of Solar
Energy
 The environmental impact of solar energy depends on the
scale of the solar project and what the energy is eventually used
for.
 Large scale solar energy projects will have a larger effect on
the environment, both positively and negatively.
 Unlike fossil fuels, solar power emits no carbon dioxide into
the atmosphere, therefore using solar energy results in a lower
amount of greenhouse gasses being emitted into the
atmosphere.
 Solar energy systems are also silent, and usually have no loud
moving parts so they do not release any sort of disturbing noise
pollutions.
 Unfortunately, solar energy panels can only absorb light when
the sun is shining, so solar systems are often times needed to be
very large in order to be efficient.
 These large systems can use a large amount of space and land,
which may have negative impact on the surrounding
environment and animal life.
 Clearing land to build large scale solar power systems can
negatively impact the environment by disturbing ecosystems
and removing plant life.
 Also, the manufacturing of solar panels can have a
negative impact on the environment.
 Solar panel manufacturers release green house gases and
other pollutants into the atmosphere during the
manufacturing and doping process of solar panels.
 Transportation of solar panels will also have a negative
impact on the environment if fossil fuels are used during
transportation.
 Every solar panel that is built and successfully used as a
substitute for fossil fuels is reducing the amount of
pollutants released into the atmosphere.
 Overall, using solar energy as a substitute for fossil fuels
will have a positive impact on the environment.
 One energy technology company estimates that converting
the entire US electric grid to solar power would reduce
greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere by 40%.
Environmental Benefits of Solar
Energy
 The use of solar energy offers other environmental benefits
along with reduced air pollution.
 Namely, switching to solar energy also reduces water
consumption and pollution because the technology that
generates electricity from solar power doesn’t require water.
 On the other hand, traditional power plants that use natural
gas and coal to generate electricity also require a massive
amount of water.
FUTURE SCOPE
 As the technology has advanced, we now have started making
use of electric vehicles too.
 Such vehicles have started becoming readily available and are
operated using battery technology as well as solar energy.
 Electric vehicles have a wonderful future for sure as they do
not pollute the environment.
 They are also cheap in their usage.
Conclusion
 Use of solar energy is efficient in nature as it is renewable
source of energy.
 By using such type of energy ,environment can be
protected from global warming.
 Solar energy right now is minimal and doesn’t make
enough difference to justify the costs, in the future it
probably has the greatest amount of potential because it
doesn’t have to be manually produced, extracted or born.
