Executive Summary
Universities play an increasingly important role
in the development of Australia’s economy.
Digitisation of the Campus environment provides
opportunities in three key areas:

Cisco’s Digital Campus approach is designed to help
progressive universities embrace the opportunities of
the digital economy. It is built on extensive experience
both of delivering Digital Cities globally to transform
the economies in which they operate and a deep
understanding of the education sector challenges and
opportunities both globally and locally. The estimated
Value at Stake* for Australia through the effective
exploitation of digitisation is $92 Bn, along with the
potential to create 240,000 jobs.

The higher education sector represents a significant
intellectual, social and economic driver for Australia.
The economic value of higher education has come
into even sharper focus given Australia is making the
transition from a low to high value-added economy.
The education sector employs nearly 8% of the
Australian workforce and is the country’s largest
export earner after coal, iron ore and natural gas
(worth A$16 billion in 2014).
The value of education is much greater than its
direct contribution in terms of employment and
exports. Education is a major input into every
Australian industry sector – and arguably every
Australian firm. Australia’s higher education system
not only equips future (and current) workers with
capability, it is the source of a significant body of
intellectual property with commercial value.
Background and Context
However, the education sector is facing a number of
major challenges; the democratisation of knowledge
and access, contestability of markets, changing
industry demands and partnership models, preparing
students for the jobs of the future and embracing
emerging digital technologies.
Cisco believes the Education and Research sector
can play a pivotal role in Australia’s success through
innovation drivers, as major employers in their own
right and as a skills pipeline for the jobs of the future.
Consequently, Cisco is investing significantly in STEM
Education, Research and Innovation programs and
looking to partner with universities in building the Digital
Campus and strategic partnerships.

broader community.
Research and Innovation - Establishing Cisco
Innovation Centres (CIC) in conjunction with leading
universities to drive innovation at a local and national
level in key verticals.
Curriculum and STEM - Academy and
Mentoring, preparing students for Information and
Communications Technology jobs while improving
economic opportunities.
Smart Work Centres - Business Incubation –
entrepreneurship – working with entrepreneurs and
leading industry players to build the smart jobs of the
future in conjunction with universities.

learned from building multiple Digital Cities around
the world to improve the livability, workability and
sustainability of its citizens.
It has added additional capabilities specifically to
enable universities to play a leading role in the building
of a Digital Community at a city, state and ultimately

While the benefits of the Digital Services already
developed in the areas of energy management,
next generation workforce, asset management,
parking, lighting, traffic management and security
are impressive, Cisco believes that the best is yet
to come and it will be the services not yet identified
that will yield the biggest benefits to universities,
their cities and ultimately the state and nation.
Cisco has established a codified approach to assess
Value at Stake based on 40 use cases for the Public
Sector, understanding of industry dynamics, pain points
and core value drivers. The approach is robust, data
driven and enables clients to target key pools of value.
The value at Stake for Digitisation for the next decade
globally is $19.0 Trillion overall, $4.6 Trillion for the
global public sector. This is equivalent to about one-
third of the expected civilian labour productivity growth
over the next 10 years.
The benefits for those universities that embrace the
opportunity of Digitisation are real.
TheValue at Stake for Australia is $93Bn
and will generate approximately 240,000
jobs. Universities have a primary role
to play in working with industry partners
to create these jobs and to educate
students to perform them.

approach, based on its proven

ultimate roll out of services.
