A brief history of the billboard
1. A brief History of the Billboard
1794 – Lithography was invented, making real posters possible.
1867 – Earliest known billboard rentals.
1908 – The Model T automobile is introduced in the U.S., increasing the number of people
using highways and therefore the reach of roadside billboards. Motorway billboards will
become increasingly popular over
the next century, eventually
reaching thousands of people per
day.
1997 – Tobacco advertising is no longer allowed on outdoor billboards in America. A large
audience could no longer be reached, yet the billboard business was so big that the effect
this had was not critical.
2010 - Augmented Billboards were introduced in the Transmediale Festival 2010 in Berlin
using Artvertiser. One of the best seen examples of this can be seen in New York’s Times
Square.
