Front cover and contents page – what theories
1. Front cover and contents page –
what theories and intention
were behind them?
2. Clear prominent text that is
easily readable- I saw this in
my front cover research. I
also referenced the season
something I saw in a few of
the magazine front covers I
looked at.
Black boxes on the white
background in order to make
the text more easily accessible
and readable to my reader.
The bar code adds to the
professional quality of
magazine meaning it is
more convincing.
Snow and winter costume
is used to convey the
theme of winter.
Additionally we see a
happy and smiling face of a
child something I saw in all
of the school magazines.
The image is the most prominent
thing here- as seen in almost all
magazines text takes a back seat.
3. • In this magazine edition I followed many of the conventions I saw in my
school magazine research. The uses and gratification theories discusses
how audience’s pick and choose what they want to take in for this reason I
decided to try and follow my questionnaire results as closely as possible to
appeal to them. From my Questionnaire I learnt it was a split 50-50 on
those willing to pay for magazines. For this reason I just decided to make
the price low so that those not willing to pay were more likely to do so.
School gossip played the highest appeal for those reading the magazine for
this reason I put a tag about upcoming events on my magazine. Pictures
were more sought after than text so for this reason the picture plays a
dominant role. The questionnaire also highlighted that people wanted a
magazine per season- this is done with the winter theme. Black and green
the colours of the Idsall uniform were wanted for the magazine and these
are seen on the front cover and later on the contents page. A mixture of
imagery was also the most popular choice and this is a mid shot, the later
pictures a long shot.
• A happy smiling face can also be seen on the front cover as I saw in my
research.
4. The text contrasts the
black background
meaning it is easily
readable by audiences. Images break up the text
meaning it is more appealing
to the eye.
Give away
encourages students
to read the
magazine, meaning
a larger audience.
Clear prominent title.
5. On my contents page I attempted to follow the conventions I saw in my
research. First of all a large image showing a happy smiling student next
to the text. I also used a giveaway in order to encourage more students
to read my magazine. You can easily find your way around the contents
page due to the clear text and font alongside page numbers.
