Management Practices in Animal
Raising
• Learning Outcomes:
1. Tell the meaning of management practices in animal
raising.
2. Find out the important management practices in animal
raising.
3. Justify the need for management practices in animal
raising.
I. Selection
A . Swine
1. Know your purpose before selecting
swine breeds. Would your prefer breeder
or fatteners.
2. Choose one with clear eyes, smooth face
with clean-cut jowls, a uniform body width
and depth, and an almost perfect
underline.
3. If female breeders are preferred, see to it
that it comes from a liter or eight or more
marketable-sized piglets.
• B. Poultry
1. Stock should come from a reputable hatchery or
franchised dealer which proper housing.
2. Choose healthy chicks without any disease and
deformities. They should be uniform in size and color.
3. For broilers, pay attention to the following
• day old chicks of 33gm
• high mortality rate and are fast growers
• high feeds efficiency
4. For later types , higher performance in egg production for
a longer time is preferable.
C. Goat
1. As much as possible avoid buying breeders from the
markets
2. Goats must have a good appetite, possessing alert eyes,
and well- formed pupils.
3. Find out whether it came from a good producing line based
on farm records
• D. Duck
1. A breeding stock of vigorous nature is preferable.
2. Breeders of about eight weeks old should be considered
and should be confined in breeding pens after four to five
months
3. Ducks of not less than seven months old should be
chosen for better hatching and liability of offspring.
4. For male ducks ( drakes), consider those with the same
age as ducks. Before mating, drakes should be separated
from ducks.
• II. Housing
A. Swine
Swines are easily affected by the change of
climate, hence they should have a pig shed
to protect them against heat and rain.
1. The site must not be muddy.
Convenience can be provided through
the construction of the piggery on a
slightly sloping well drained area. A 9 ½
x 10 ½ feet pigpen can have a single
sow and her piglets of 10-18 growing
pigs or 5-7 fattening pigs.
2. Durable structure with well cemented flooring
facilities cleaning and assures the hog growers of
disease and pest prevention.
3. Cheaper materials like bamboo, nipa, and palm
leaves can also be used for the swine house.
What matters is the protection that is provided to
the swine and its suitability to the site.
B. Poultry
The location of the poultry should be the first
matter of consideration. A poultry grower must
be mindful of the following
1. The suitable site must be in areas where
there is no pollution of any type is found
2. Construct the poultry house where there
is good sunlight throughout the day.
Exposure to excessive heat, natural or
artificial, must not be overlooked.
3. A simple drainage system must be
provided for strict sanitation purposes. In
addition, there should be no open canal
the poultry house to safeguard the
chickens against the spread of diseases.
4. The poultry house must be spacious enough to avoid
overcrowding. This is unhealthy and weakens the bird’s
natural resistance is diseases.
C. Goat
Goats are cud- chewing animals whose milk is cheaper and
more digestible than the cow’s; hence it is considered as a
poor man’s cow. One to two goat head will suffice as a starter
for backyard and raising.
1. A grassy, well-drained site is conducive for raising goods.
2. The goat house or shed shields the animals from rain and
wetness.
3. Cheaper materials like bamboo, cogon grass can serve as
the shed. An elevated floor where the goat likes to sleep
should be provided.
4. The shed must be properly ventilated and drained at all
times.
D. Duck
You can expect a profitable business raising ducks because
of their eggs. Since majority of our people prefer eating balut
(boiled incubated duck’s egg), a product of a duck’s egg, rest
assured that you won’t go wrong with raising ducks.
1. A duck’s house must be built in a quiet and cool place.
Fortunate are those in bay towns since they will have no
problem as to the sources of water. Nearness to a stream
or pond must also be considered
2. To provide cool dwelling for ducks, cheap materials like
cogon, bamboo, and nipa are recommendable.
3. If a swimming pond is provided, it must be 10ft wide and20
ft long for 45-50 birds. This is optional, since ducks can lay
just as many eggs in their house.
4. A 3 to 4 square feet of floor space for each duck is enough
to avoid overcrowding.
