What is the problem you are attempting to change?
The problem : Habitat for birds
Idea for Change : A Bird Feeding Corner in all the schools
How did the idea originate?
We the students of SVISG undertake animation film classes in Maths Lab where
we observed a bird’s nest near an Air Conditioner corner. Since the window is of
glass, we kept observing it for few days/weeks and had fun time barging in
private life of the bird that nested there. Our animation teacher gave us a camera
and asked us to click the pictures and write what we feel after we see this nest.
Surprisingly, as we penned down our feelings, we realized that the habitat is
becoming more and more unfriendly for birds. A nest at an air conditioner was a
clear example of how birds are forced to nest in an unnatural habitat. We all
looked around our green school and thought of creating a special corner which
could be called friend of the birds. We discussed this idea within our class and
kids were excited at the idea. The idea reached to teachers and then to principal.
Finally we all were given a corner which we could call “Bird Feeding Corner”.
During which week will you carry out solution?
We are all on this project now.
We are given 10 minutes activity period time to go, visit and observe the corner.
It is the best time for our group of friends. We now go there with bajra and even
bread crums. Some of us even take food from the Tiffin’s as we realized we do
not know much about what do birds enjoy eating? We are now discovering about
birds, their tastes and we wait for the new birds to join our feeding corner. The
bird feeding corner is becoming popular in students. Everyone wishes to be in
our group. Bird watching could be such a great fun, we never realized. We all are
now waiting for a day when a bird would make a nest in this area.
Why this idea has the potential of Design for Change?
We feel that every school should adopt this idea. It would bring children closer to
nature. They would get some time just to observe birds, nature.
