The children in Nanded chose to do a tree plantation project for Design For Change to save the environment. They researched the topic and found that their neighborhood had few trees. They created roles plays and speeches to spread the message of planting trees. On October 26th, the children presented their roles plays and speeches to 20-30 households and planted 20 trees in the neighborhood. The event was a success and the community provided positive feedback about the importance of saving trees and the children's courage in presenting the message. The children felt they were able to make a positive difference in their community by giving a little of their time.

1. Design For Change at Nanded
Plant Trees and Save Environment
When we received the brochure of DFC we were very much excited and
wanted to quickly share this with the kids. We were thinking of a topic
that would be easier to handle for the kids but we thought we should
give the kids the liberty to choose something that they think is
important and where they think they want to make a difference. They
came up with many topics like providing healthy water at school,
encouraging the neighborhood to save electricity , banning plastic bags
etc.
They did some meetings(sept 1 & 5) and found out lot of information
regarding several topics. Finally they chose the topic of tree plantation
because they thought the neighbohood has very less amount of trees.
The kids were very excited and did many meetings as to how they will
go about spreading the message to the people in the community. They
were planning different ways to implement it. But as it is rightly said
“charity begins at home” so on the 15th of september they started
spreading their message at their homes first.
They planned to do a get together where they would spread their
message through role play n speeches. They started planning for this
and divided their work among the participants. Some were responsible
for making scripts for the play. Others were responsible for arranging
for the plants for the major event when they would be doing
plantations.

2. They decided 26th of october as the day for the final event of
presenting their role plays and going within the vicinity and planting the
trees. This program was done with a great enthusiasm and as it is
rightly said the best power one could possess is the power of “I CAN”
and the kids had it in them. They knew they can make a difference.
Twenty five children participated in the program. They spoke to near
about 20-30 households and they planted their trees in their
backyards. They presented their skit and speeches in front of many
parents and other people of the neighborhood that they had invited.
The total number of trees planted were 20.
People who attend this gave excellent feedback of the information
they had provided about why saving trees is important and they also
like the courage by which these kids were presenting their skits.
The progam was done in a great manner and every child thought that by
giving a little amount of their time they can make a difference.
