4. • Echo was an Oreiad nymph
from Mount Cithaeron in
Boeotia.
• Hera cursed Echo so that
she no longer had a voice
of her own, and the nymph
was only able to repeat the
words of others.
• A nymph who falls in love
with narcissus
Echo
5. Narcissus was
a handsome youth
from the city of
Thespiae in Boeotia
and the son of the
river god Cephissus
and the nymph
Liriope. He was
distinguished for his
beauty.
6. • When still a child, the blind seer Tiresias made a
prophecy that Narcissus would lead a long life only
as long as he did not “know himself”, although the
meaning this is not altogether clear.
• Narcissus would grow up to be amongst the most
beautiful of all mortals, with a beauty on par with
that of Endymion, Adonis or Hyacinthus.
• He was obsessed with his beauty.
• Narcissus would become a deer hunter, but his
beauty brought forth many admirers both male and
female, and mortal and immortal.
10. APOLLO
• Apollo is the Olympian god of
the sun and light, music and
poetry, healing and plagues,
prophecy and knowledge, order
and beauty, archery and
agriculture.
• A complex deity who turns up in
art and literature possibly as often
as Zeus himself.
• Apollo is the only major god who
appears with the same name in
both Greek
and Roman mythology.
11. HYACINTHUS
• Hyacinth, or Hyacinthus as he is
also often called, is most widely
associated with Sparta, for some
name Hyacinth as the grandson
of Lacedaemon.
• Apollo and Hyacinthus are best
friends.
• When Hyacinthus died, he was
reborn as a flower.
13. Apollo wishes that he himself
would stop living so that the
beautiful, young Hyacinthus
could live on. As he speaks
those words, the blood spilling
from the dying youth turns the
grass green, and a beautiful
flower grows—the hyacinth.
