Thornburg campus achieves LEED Gold
New Mexico Business Weekly
Thornburg Investment Management’s Santa Fe campus has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and MEDIA
Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The campus was designed by architect Ricardo Legorreta. His design focused on “honoring the beauty of Santa Fe’s
natural environment while incorporating the latest in building technology and design.” Albuquerque architecture
and construction firms Dekker/Perich/Sabatini and Klinger Constructors were involved in the construction
and design process.
“We worked very hard to achieve this LEED designation,” said Garrett Thornburg, founder and chairman of
Thornburg.
Facilities Manager David Ford said the energy and water savings are significant.
“We sought to create a building that would provide a unique and healthy environment for our employees and wound up with an incredible
building that will be the standard of excellence for future construction in our state,” Ford said.
USGBC has verified that the campus will use 47 percent less energy and 43 percent less water than a typical office building, and said 90
percent of construction waste was recycled in the building process.
The campus features environmental elements throughout the interior and exterior of the building. Interior features include an under floor
air delivery system, sensor-controlled T5 lighting, operable windows, low-emitting materials and extensive controlled day lighting. In
addition, passive water harvesting, an underground cistern and an outdoor porous paving system allow the campus to reduce outdoor
water use and direct water back into the community aquifer.
“This amazing building is the first of its kind in northern New Mexico,” said Ray Smith, president of Klinger Constructors.
Thornburg said making employees feel comfortable was part of every phase of the design.
“To be able to give employees the cleanest indoor air, daylight in almost every office space and breathtaking scenic views in an inspiring
architectural marvel is the perfect union of architectural style, environmental design and workplace functionality,” Thornburg said. “I
have great admiration for how the architects and designers have brought this original concept to life.”
The 100,000-square-foot campus is located at 2300 North Ridgetop Road.
