2. AIM
• Explore the power of using Brightspace as a tracking tool
• Create a repository of student information
• Create a repository of tracking information for accountability
• To encourage teachers to think about other possible
ways to use Brightspace to enhance the student
experience
3. BACKGROUND
• MnSCU and the Minnesota Department of
Education (MDE) invited teachers and faculty to
work on the Technical Skill Attainment project as
required in the Carl D. Perkins IV Federal Law.
• Hennepin Technical College's largest program
(IT/Computers Careers) is integrating these 3rd
party skills assessments into their awards using
D2L Brightspace.
4. HISTORY
• Beginning in 2013 TSA - Technical Skills Assessment - is
linked to the Perkins Funding.
• The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and the
Minnesota Department of Education invited teachers
and faculty together to continue work on the Technical
Skill
• Attainment project as required in the Carl D. Perkins IV
Federal Law.
5. CONSORTIUM
• Consortiums must identify and approve Programs
of Study.
• Programs of Study are:
“Sets of aligned programs and curricula that begin
at the high school level and continue through
college and university certificate, diploma, and
degree programs”
6. KEY ELEMENTS
Some of the key elements of a Program of Study are:
• Competency based curricula tied to industry expectations
and skill standards
• Sequential course offerings that provide strategic entry
and exit points as needed throughout a lifetime
• Flexible course and program formats convenient for
learner segments
7. KEY ELEMENTS-cont
• Course portability for seamless progression
• Multiple entry and exit points to support continuing
education, returning adults, and dislocated workers;
Connections between high school and post
secondary education, skill progression, and career
opportunities that align academic credentials with
job advancement in high-skill, high-wage or high-
demand occupations.
8. ASSESSMENTS
• Consortium members are to select at least one
assessment from the list of state approved 3rd
party tests for assessing career and technical
students within the appropriate program of
study.
• HTC uses D2L Brightspace to give out
information to students and to track and
assess their standing in the computer careers
program areas.
9. CONTENTS
• How HTC created a zero credit course to allow
for tracking a student transcript and using D2L
Brighspace as a one-stop shop for data
information.
• Can be also used as a graduation requirement!

along with a study guide.
14. OUTCOME
Promote discussion among faculty and administrators in
K-12 and colleges with career and technical programs
that receive Perkins Funding and need tracking.

- Learn about your strengths and areas that need
improvement.
- Receive a score report and/or certificate for your career
portfolio.
- Gain feedback before taking expensive
certification/licensure exams.
