Essay History of the Scientific Method
Scientific method is the way scientists learn and study the world around them. It is the process by which scientists work over a period of time to
construct an accurate (i.e. reliable, consistent and non–arbitrary) representation of the world. In the study of natural phenomenon, personal and cultural
beliefs strongly influence our interpretations and perceptions. Scientific method relies on standard procedures to minimize these influences when
developing a theory.
Scientific method consists of four steps:
(1)– Making an observation of a phenomenon.
(2)– Formulating a hypotheses to explain the phenomenon.

Almost 2000 years later Galileo challenged Aristotle's s work on mechanics and cosmology. Galileo did not ridicule Aristotle, but simply showed that he
had jumped to the wrong conclusions and derived at inadequate answers because of his physics being not very mathematical. Errors in Aristotle's work
were rectified through direct observation and by the availability of new instruments and experimentation techniques in the 17th century. Amongst other
contributions, Galileo contradicted Aristotle's view that bodies naturally returned to their natural place. It is believed that Galileo demonstrated by
throwing different weights from the Leaning Tower of Pisa that the weight of the bodies was irrelevant to their speed of falling and only the density of
the medium counted.
Lavoisier interpreted facts discovered by others and corrected them for errors. He is considered the father of chemistry although he discovered no new
chemical substances apart from a few new chemical facts. Lavoiser used to carry out a lot of experiments, quantify their results and take various
precautionary measures. He studied Stahl`s theory on combustion and found errors in reasoning. Stahl had given the concept 'phlogiston' for

The Scientific Method is the standardized procedure that scientists are supposed to follow when conducting experiments, in order to try to construct a
reliable, consistent, and non–arbitrary representation of our surroundings. To follow the Scientific Method is to stick very tightly to a order of
experimentation. First, the scientist must observe the phenomenon of interest. Next, the scientist must propose a hypothesis, or idea in which the
experiments will be based around. Then, through repeated experimentation, the hypothesis can either be proven false or become a theory. If the

generation. He then called the principles behind his experiment "Metodo Scientifico" or The Scientific Method.
The first cases of what would be considered properly using the Scientific Method can be found earlier, though, back in the studies of Galileo, early
in the 17th century. He first observed that heavy objects gain speed as they fall. He then proposed, or hypothesized, that the rate of falling of massive
objects was proportional to the distance that the object has fallen. Following the Scientific Method, he tested his hypothesis and found it to be false,
since objects falling unequal distances do not fall in the same amount of time, as his hypothesis led to. Since his hypothesis failed, he made a new one,
which proposed that the rate at which an object falls is directly proportional to the time the object has spent falling. This was tested by rolling balls
down an inclined plane and calculating the speed and time values from those observations. Later, these experiments led to the discovery of the
gravitational constant g, and a better understanding of the Scientific Method.

Knowledge and Scientific Methods As we talk about scientific thinking in class, we come upon the term of critical thinking to describe scientific
thinking. When evaluating any sort of scientific claims, we must make sure that we are able to justify them and ignore any evidence that can blind

We found that many scientist have been trying to research stem cells for a while now. Because it is a very controversial topic, many seems to not
agree with this idea as stated in (Rehman, 2014). It takes so much research to be able to find out the results that stem cells can actually have. In the
stem cell research they claim that they can have specialized cells (embryotic cells), to help produce more cells that able to cure other diseases. Since
this research take a lot of time and embryotic cells to do it makes the research harder to do. In this claim I think that the principle of replicability is
necessary in order to make sure that this claim can actually help in bone–narrow and other things. If we are not sure that this cannot help certain
diseases as it claims then why should be using the embryotic cells on research that does not help. For these reason, having this research replicable by
many people is an important factor to find the effectiveness of this procedure. Since bone–narrow is common we must replicate this process to make

There are several disease that are we still do not know much about despite copious amounts of research. Cancer and Alzheimer's are two major
examples of these mysterious diseases. Although the scientific method is useful in the development and research on various medications and
treatments, there are still limitations. Patients react to treatments in various ways, because bodies and systems vary from person to person. There is
simply too many variable to be able to pinpoint the exact reaction a patient may have. Clinical trials and studies can narrow down these reactions
down to a list of possible side effects, but doctors can never know for sure how a patient will respond. There are many unknowns and treating actual
patients is much different that conducting an experiment investigating how two medications will effect an experimental unit. During a designed
experiment, the experimenter can control all the variables except for the experimental variable and get clear straightforward results. On the other
hand, when treating a real patient with a severe illness, such as cancer, the physician has to keep an eye on all body systems. They cannot simple give

Why Do We Use Scientific Method
In all of our lives we have used the Scientific Method one way or another. Sometimes we don't realize that we are using it in our day to day lives.
One way I have used it recently is with my dog Chance. My dog Chance is a young and active dog. He always wants to play with his toys or
walking with us through the neighborhood. One day he started to not act like his usual self. He wouldn't touch his favorite ball, he would not eat or
beg for food, and he didn't want to go on walks. This is when I started to use the scientific method in my life. First I started my observation about the
dog. I had to know why he was acting so different. I walked around my house to find any clues I possibly could. I walked into living room to find
my sisters basketball. Instead of finding her solid basketball, I found a gaping hole in the side. I furthered my observation skills and noticed bike
marks around the deflated ball also. I wrote this down to keep track of all the clues I to help my dog. Then I went to the bathroom and found that
the trash was dumped over. One room after the other the trash seemed to be messed up in a way. Trash would be outside of the can ripped or

Then it was time to test the hypothesis, make an experimental design, and make our observations. I made my move on the third lap, and ended up
winning the race. Here the actual race was the experimental design, from which my coach and I were able to make the observations that sense I
won, our hypothesis was indeed correct. We could have made a graph showing all the racers in the race if we would have liked. We then were able to
support the hypothesis, and also publish any types of results we would have liked. My personnel experience coincides with the scientific method all the

The Scientific method is a process that scientists use to solve a problem. It generally involves four distinct steps that constitute the "Scientific Method".
This paper describes the steps of the scientific method, and its application in a real–world scenario we experienced.
Step 1: Formulating a Problem
Formulating a problem can range from simple to difficult solutions to a problem. In order to solve a problem, you must first know what the problem

When the water level in the sump pit rises, this switch turns on the pump. This pumps the water out of the pit and into a pipe which ejects the drainage
water out of the house and (hopefully) far away from the house."
With the sump pump installed, we waited for severe rainstorms to hit before observing the results. After one light storm, there was no flooding. But
after a second, more severe storm, the floor continued to take on water, which led us to the Conclusion that either the flooding was not due to the rising
water table, or the sump pump was ineffective at stopping the rising water table.
At that point we decided to observe the flow of water outside during the next big storm. When it finally hit, we went outside and observed a
significant amount of water flowing straight down the wall just outside the walkway, from the top of the walkway under the deck. Once again, the
walkway floor took on water. We revised ourHypothesis to state that the basement walkway was flooding due to water flowing directly down the
exterior wall, underground, where it entered gaps in the wall to the walkway.
Our solution to test the Hypothesis was to install a gutter under the deck, under the flashing which separated the walkway roof to the walkway exterior
wall. This would catch rain water and funnel it away from the wall, therefore preventing water from flowing directly down the wall where it could
enter the walkway
