After World War II left Britain bankrupt, the United States loaned Britain 3.5 billion which was paid off by 2006. During the Cold War, Britain and the United States worked together to prevent the spread of communism from the Soviet Union. By 1965, the number of people under British rule declined drastically from 700 million to 5 million, with 3 million of those remaining in Hong Kong.
