Selecting a Respirator for Construction Dust
Dust and debris are part of the job for most construction workers. But
construction dust can cause serious health problems. When engineering
controls can’t safely control construction dust, respirators must be used.
This article presents information from NIOSH about non-powered and
powered air-purifying masks, pros and cons of each and how to select a
correct respirator for different dust hazards.

Annual Stand-Down to Prevent Falls
Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of
death for construction employees, accounting for 320 of the 1,008
construction fatalities recorded in 2018. To help reduce construction falls,
employers and workers participated in the annual National Safety Stand-
Down to prevent falls in construction last week. If you missed it, you can
still use the available materials to talk about fall hazards and prevention on
your construction sites.

cited for not protecting employees from COVID-19 exposure. Recent
examples include:
So far this month, Cal/OSHA has cited 17 employers during
inspections of industries where workers have an elevated risk,
including food processing, meatpacking, health care, agriculture,
retail and a police department. Proposed penalties range from
$2,025 to $51,190.
On Sept. 12, Federal OSHA released information on citations to
five companies across the country. Employers included food
processing companies and health care facilities. Fines ranged from
$9,639 to $28,070 and totaled more than $80,000.

FMCSA Proposes New Under-21 Commercial Driver Pilot Program
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is proposing and seeking public comments on a pilot
program to allow drivers aged 18-20 to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce. The program
would let drivers participate if they fall within two categories: 1) CDL holders aged 18-20 who operate CMVs in
interstate commerce while taking part in a 120-hour probationary period and a subsequent 280-hour probationary
period under an apprenticeship program established by an employer, or 2) 19-20-year-old commercial drivers who
have operated CMVs in intrastate commerce for at least one year and 25,000 miles. Currently, 49 states and the
District of Columbia already allow 18-20-year-old CDL holders to operate CMVs within state borders. Learn more.
New Poster and Fact Sheet Available to Help Firefighters Safely Fight Row House Fires
NIOSH has developed new training materials to help educate members of the fire service about the unique nature
of row house fires. The new Row House Firefighting Tactics fact sheet and poster are available for download free of
charge. The materials address: Typical features of row houses; Tactics for fighting row house fires; Areas for
potential fire extension. NIOSH recommends the fact sheet be used in training efforts and the poster be displayed in
common areas of fire stations. Download them here.
OSHA Silica Enforcement Guide Offers Insights
OSHA has published new worksite inspection guidelines for its staff regarding enforcement of the respirable
crystalline silica standard. The document also gives employers specific insights into the inspection process. It
includes two compliance checklists - one for the construction industry and one for general industry and maritime.
Each checklist contains the specific topics covered in an inspection. The new Inspection Procedures for the
Respirable Crystalline Silica Standards manual became effective on June 25. Download the manual.
